do you think that the aeon flow closed would be better than vmoda crossfade? real question because I'm new to this.
@TMRaven6 жыл бұрын
33:50 No, Dan tuned them distinctly differently. The closed back is tuned to be more neutral, with less of a mid-bass, upper-bass bump-- it's actually slightly depressed there imo-- and more upper mids in the 1-2khz area. Upper treble around 10khz-12khz is slightly less too. The open Aeon is tuned with a beefy mid-upper bass and slightly depressed upper mid, with slightly more energetic 10-12khz. The Closed is a flatter response, while the open is a mild u-shape. I don't consider either better than the other, but when I had the two on hand at the same time, I came away preferring the open, with its lack of wide soundstage being its biggest takeaway. My ears also don't get moist over time with the open as opposed to the closed, which was another reason why I preferred the open.

I remember Jerry Harvey (Founder of Ultimate Ears, Owner of JH audio, prominent recording engineer) saying that the audio future that he has sort of envisioned is one where the end-consumer has full access to DSP and EQ to make their equipment sound the way that they like it. Basically, he thinks that all equipment should ship out from the factory near-neutral, and the endgame consumer should have the tools to tweak it according to their preference. This is why he has teamed up with Astell&Kern and done so many projects with them because the EQ software on their DAPs is amazing and people can make his IEMs sound exactly how they want them to. That all companies should be worried about is making amazing hardware and that the colour of the sound should be left up to the consumer. Because everyone has their preferences, especially in the bass department. He actually likened it to buying food from the grocery store and then seasoning it yourself. I bring this up to dispute the people who absolutely hate EQ and yourself when you said that you feel that you shouldn't have to EQ a set of cans to review them. Of course you are entitled to your opinion. I'm not trying to say that you are "wrong" or anything like that. This is audio and we audiophiles should all just be having fun. However, I do feel that people who won't even touch the software side of things are missing out. I think that perhaps they already have the perfect equipment for them and they just don't realize it because they haven't tried customizing it to their preference. If the future really is that all high-end equipment will ship out neutral and the EQ will be left up to the consumer I think that they will have a hard time adjusting to the new environment and wonder what is going on.

I owned both the open and the closed; ended up selling the open. FWIW I don't use the damping material in either pair of headphones. My problem with the open was the upper midrange and lower treble. The low mids had just the right amount of warmth to them; just above neutral. The upper midrange and lower treble was just somewhat recessed followed by a treble peak around 9khz-10khz which made female vocals and cymbals sound... odd. Some songs sounded fantastic with them, but the way they skewed female vocals on some songs just killed them for me. I'm with Zeos in saying both are good headphones, but the closed are the ones to keep.
@Haeveth6 жыл бұрын
I personally used the 1-notch filters for my AFO, most prefer the black foam or no filters because they are clearer and less warm but I personally found them lacking in dynamics and tonally wrong having little weight or texture, also the treble could be a tad shrill at times. The 2-notch filters are very relaxing and laid back but loss some clarity with distant vocal and upper mids. Even with the 1-notch the Aeon still need a modest EQ to sound less weird. I bought the AFO over LCD-2C and AFC. Between the AFO and LCD-2C they are comparable but the weight of the LCD is what makes me pick the AFO
@skengasaurus5 жыл бұрын
I whole-heartedly agree with the dynamics issue. I found them neutral and as you mentioned, too bright with the filters, but then cut upper mids with the 1-notch white which only starts to make a difference with the brightness. People seem pretty polarized on this, and though I can totally understand why certain ears find them perfect, the ones who don't have the same conclusion as I do: extremely detailed, but lifeless.

I am interested in the Dan Clark audio aeon 2 closed back and would like to know which amplifier it needs to drive this 🎧 reasonably. Is a better mobile DAC or DAP sufficient? Or does it have to be a stationary amplifier?
@nostro10015 жыл бұрын
@ 1Schnellbach.....The new Dan Clark's are meant to be somewhat portable and mobile friendly (I don't think that's really 100% true). However, either a mobile dac or dap is clearly better, you just need to think what is the minimal power requirements you need. I'd suggest as a minimum something like dragonfly red. As for a dap, well again it depends on the dap. Obviously, the more power the better, so it really depends on what dap you're talking about. Cheers!

Hi Zeos, I own the AEON Flow Open and modified them at the back to get closed. For me the AFC sounds in the mids more empazised but they have a quite narrow soundstage. With my mod the AFO sound nearly like the AFC but with a great soundstage and very well pronounced mids. So maybe you could try to dampen backwards with a piece of printer paper with a glued carbon look selfadhesive foil. So the AEON Flow Open are a very good choice if it comes to modification. Modfied with the carbon like dampening and the one notch inner dampening they are the best AEON Flow for my ears. Btw. I like your videos very much. You give me inspiration. Best Mark

I ordered a pair of used AFC and new Argons to compare and see If I like either of them enough to keep. I have an Aeolus coming and I think I want something a little different in my closed back, but I do appreciate some warmth. Everything I hear about the AFC makes me think they'll be too "boring" for me, but I've always been drawn to their different look with supposedly great comfort and light weight. I can't stop looking at the ZMF closed backs though... I'll probably sell the Aeons and Argons in short order to buy some. Oof says the bank account.

These are nice...don't have the natural sibilance with older tracks like MJ...Depeche mode etc in 24bit FLAC...and you can tell from the dip around 6KHz on FR curve. I personally like this even if it may not be 100% true to recording. All other frequencies are neutral. Only prob is the soundstage. But no matter the price range there is always a sacrifice in sound for sound stage, less so on open backs.
@DanDhaniels6 жыл бұрын
Hey Zeos, would you please recommend me a good planar magnetic alternative to the LCD-4 sound quality wise? Here's the situation: a friend of mine bought an Audeze LCD-4 back in December, and last week he had a driver failure on one side. He sent it back to Audeze so they'll repair it, as it is still in the warranty period, but I thought it was just ridiculous, to spend almost $4K in a headphone and then it "dies"... it's like, I have my HD 600 since 2009 and they're still going strong. I know it's a different technology, but still, spending $4K in a headphone the least you can expect is quality control, I think. I was thinking about upgrading to a planar magnetic as well, and I absolutely LOVED the sound of the LCD-4 when my friend agreed to let me spend some time with it, but I'm afraid of such failure happening to me, that's why I'm asking your advice on good alternatives to the LCD-4 sound wise. Thanks in advance, your videos are always great 👍👍👍👍
