Reolacing the nostalgic cold feeling of the stainless steel back and adding the bluetooth in my opinion is a crime to the essence of these childhood gems. It feels wrong. I'm also against the transparent everything trend going on but oh well. Completely changing the premium feeling of cold solid steel is the biggest one.

It has been a while since I modified an iPod, but I believe places sell (or sold) thicker backs specifically designed for the large battery mods. Also, one reason why I went with an older iPod in the first place was actually that it lacked Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I wanted a device for music at work and I wasn't allowed to have anything with wireless connectivity. The older iPods worked great for that... after swapping the hard drive. The one thing that I wish I could change? Better software for the iPod. I'm pretty sure I looked at RockBox, but I can't remember why I didn't use it in the end. I do recall that my main complaint was the difference between album handling between the iPod and iOS. I think it has to do with there being two Artist tags used for music files where one is more geared toward specifics for a song (e.g., listing a featured artist) and the other is the generic artist (i.e., whose album it is). If I recall, the iPod has no support for the latter, which meant that it kept separating anything with "Artist ft. Other Artist" as separate from "Artist".

Normally I like transparent technology, I think it's looked really good in your past projects. However, I just don't like the look here. Maybe it's because I just think the original color/material design of the iPod is so good and "premium looking".

I wish RockBox had a full on 'iPod Mode' that took all the exra stuff away. All I want is an iPod with drag and drop, but all the extra settings just clutter the whole thing up for me. There's the iPod Classic theme, but that still has all the 'everything else' exposed.

Time to dig out my old iPod 5th gen I got... Christmas 2005 - a gift from my first post-college employer. Black as well. Not a fan of the full clear shell you have on this, but I definitely like the storage swap since the full-size iPods still relied on an HDD - the newly-introduced iPod Nano relied on flash storage. The USB type-C swap, though, is definitely needed, too, since compatible charging cables are getting harder to find. Though your other mods took the iPod 5th gen and made it the thickness of the iPod 1st gen.

I miss dedicated MP3 players. A lot of people will say you can just use your phone (either services like spotify or the mp3s themselves) but I always found using the phone to be quite inelegant and clunky when I'm trying to do things that isn't calling or texting. Like yeah, I can eventually get something set up with it, but it feels more like a stopgap measure than something I can feel comfortable with. Not to mention how weighty phones can be when you might only need/want something lightweight and distraction free (say at the gym or at home exercising) And yes, I know you can still get some dedicated devices on places like Amazon from companies no doubt out of China, but a lot of them come with some rather primitive/cheap software. Making it harder to get the kind of control you'd want with mp3 players today (things like easily setting up playlists or reliable bluetooth) What I'd really like is more like something with dedicated software that goes out of its way to do more than bare minimum. Much like how rockbox works on these old devices except on its own dedicated device. Maybe something like that exists. Though I haven't really found much in a reasonable price point yet.

This full clear iPod looks so insanely amazing!!, I have one from elite obsolete electronics but only have the clear front plate and I’m seriously thinking to make it fully clear, i also made the 3d model for the back plate. Here are some clarifications, resin 3d prints shrink around 0.2mm that’s not much but enough to avoid high precision components won’t fit. Second, you could avoid all Bluetooth soldering, there is an incredible PCB mod by moonlit market that allows you add Bluetooth and usb c for charge and sync (this last with couple soldering points, I’m not sure if works for audio too) on your device, this can save you so much time and space. The screen it’s so good too, couple years a go I’ve seen an oled prototype and hope it can be released someday, meanwhile you made the definitive ipod

The price of that USB mod is very high. Just the bare PCB and three more parts for $20. Realistically, the PCB likely costs around $0.26/pc when ordered in batches of 100, which the mod maker probably did. The resistors 0.001/pc, USB-C port ~$0.15, and the MUX ~$0.5 to $3. If you include shipping plus a reasonable $5 markup for the mod maker's effort, then this entire thing should be available for ~$10, but requesting over $20 for just a DIY parts kit like this is insane.

5th gen iPods are so much easier to open compared to the cursed 6th and 7th gen. Same build but the 6 and 7 have aluminum front panels so they’re almost impossible to open without destroying the clips in the back case. My 6th gen’s back case got damaged so I used the back case from my damaged 5th gen. Then the SD card in my iFlash Solo got popped out so I had to open it, absolutely destroying another back case and even my LCD in the process. The LCD has a line on it and a big dead spot on it for now. I also corrupted the Rockbox installation so I have to format the SD card with my trusty old 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro on macOS 15, then I have to actually restore the iPod with my PC, since that’s where my iTunes library is. Idk if I wanna go back to Rockbox on it, especially because the corruption happened about two hours after installing it.
