This $5k in harddrives also serves what 5 other functions? I think he listed probably $125/month in services he now homelabs. If that estimate is right, this pays for itself in 3 and a half years, without factoring the rest of the hardware. Plus normies don't need $5k in hdds, so the cost and time to recoup is even lower.

I think it's a reasonable critique because the video is presented as saying 'instead of paying for Netflix, just do this', and then proceeds to show an overkill build that required him to also get a new 3d printer that probably also cost him $1000. A video with this title that just showed off a simple NAS setup would be a lot more relatable and within the realm of possibility for a lot more people.

I love this build, but I do have to say that saying it's a 'replacement for netflix' isn't really true. You still have to obtain media somehow. The legal way to do that would be purchasing, but if you buy 1 bluray movie a month, you're at the cost of Netflix. If you're willing to sail the high seas, that's a different argument, but I don't think anyone's going to publicly endorse that (even if I do it all the time). And to do THAT reliably, you need to pay for a VPN or else you're gonna get dinged by your ISP pretty quickly. While I have a home server with a similar setup with 100's of movies, it's certainly not for everyone or even most people.
@johnatkinson1111
@johnatkinson1111 11 сағат бұрын
To be fair you can also buy pre owned movies. Sure you won’t get the newest movies or even the newest blu ray releases but you can build a solid movie library. I got a copy of Deadpool for $3 from a local charity shop. It does mean you have to look around a bit more but used can be very good at building up a solid collection and if every so often you end up really wanting to see a recently released movie then buying new can still have to ahead. Also movies are a bigger weak point of this setup but TV shows are where the real value can be. Complete collections new depending on the show(ie what they price it at) can be cheaper than streaming assuming you don’t binge the whole show and instead pace yourself. I’ll sometimes find complete collections of 100-250 episodes for $35-$50.

I was wondering that. I basically came here out of mild curiosity because of the title. I skipped through the video and he basically appears to be building a home server. I had no clue how that was supposed to even relate to the title of the video, since, you know.. netflix isnt just a server, it's a library. Having a home server is great and all, but without content, it's not an alternative to netflix. That's like building a bookshelf and then claiming you dont need to visit the library anymore lmfao

These media hosting software really don’t need as much power and if done right don’t need as much drive space. The setup I’m using is a 2014 Mac mini running jellyfin using a 2tb ssd via usb and a 1tb ssd via thunderbolt 2, while I don’t have the same level of security as having backup drives it does me well enough to store copies of my DVD/blu ray’s. If the drives fail then it’ll be annoying to rip the blu ray’s again but the redundancy isn’t really needed because I still have the disks. The number of drives he has is overkill unless you have a massive media library in which case you likely never went to Netflix/streaming.

I'd be wary of temps in this NAS build as each HDD needs strong direct air during a full parity check/RAID rebuild. The 200mm fan in this build won't deliver enough cooling for the left-most and right-most drives; a square of 4x 120mm or 4x 140mm is a much better configuration. Combined with a motherboard with a temp sensor header (many ASUS boards), you can connect the top two fans to one fan header and in BIOS assign it to respond to the temp sensor you've taped to the hottest drive. The HDD fans will now ramp dynamically to cool the drives under heavy load, and the bottom two can spin slower to cool the system as needed. Also as the HDD's are the heaviest component, this case is top-heavy; so suggest they should be at the bottom. In everyday use, this build's airflow will seem fine, but (♥your content and channel Zac 😛) you'll notice he didn't cover temps while building the array in the video, which is the biggest test of a NAS enclosure. Ex: a typical Unraid parity check with an array filled with 10TB drives takes about 18 hours for me, and 24TB will be ~2 days, and each of those drives must have very good direct cooling which responds to rising HDD temps. Overall loved the video and hope to see revision 2!

Everyone complaining about hard drive costs is missing the point. You could achieve 95% of the functionality outlined in this video with a used laptop and a single drive. The server can be as cheap or as expensive as you choose. Zac chose very expensive because that's what he wanted. You can choose differently and still get most of the functionality. Also this server isn't just replacing Netflix, it can replace most cloud services and home automation.

I mean I buy blu ray releases of the shows I want to watch and rip them to my media setup and it works well, you can still buy blu rays. I’m currently going through seasons 1-4 of Doctor Who(2005), I paid $33 for the box set instead of paying $17/month for a comparable experience on MAX. The blu ray contains 60 episodes and I’m not binging it so I watch an episode a night(although I sometimes skip a night). At the rate I’m going I’ll complete it after 2 months of paying for max is up and I get the bonus features including some mini episodes and the behind the scenes content, in the end I’ll still own the copy of the show so I could always rewatch it at a later date. You can also buy pre owned dvd/blu ray’s at thrift/charity shops for much less than new saving a lot more money. It very much depends on your speed of consuming content. I go slow so I can buy new box sets and by the time my first watch is over I’ll be ahead but if you binge watch you’ll have a much harder time.

@@ZacBuildsCompletely agree. I have a dedicated server for Plex and my family adores it. It’s barely more cumbersome for those non tech inclined than Netflix, but easy enough the most can get it up and working without much headache. I have a ton of addons and other programs to enhance and automate it as well. Plex just works fantastically. I would however suggest going with Intel over AMD for Plex. AMD is no where near as good for transcoding video compared to an intel iGPU on a modern chip. You can also get cheap NUC’s and/or mini PC’s that I would suggest over the one you’re using here.

I can't believe people still believe this guy... A Synology isn't loud at all, looks better than this frankenstein PC, and definitely doesn't cost as much. You balked at the price of a Synology and then proceeded to spend over $3k just on drives. No one balking at the price of Netflix is doing this shit 😂

The price of the synology options didnt include hdd's either though... why is what he spent on drives relevant? Also its completely subjective but synology nas' dont look bad, but theyre boring af. Off the shelf options work and have their place but this is a DIY tinkering channel... so it doesnt appeal to a lot of people here.
@techguypaul
@techguypaul 3 сағат бұрын
@@JFat5158 the Synology price comparison was also too brief and didn't really go into any of the specs, nor does he say how much all of his 3D printed shit costs, which is not cheap. A Synology also doesn't look like a second huge ass, ugly PC. But yes the hard drive price is still very relevant. If you need your streaming box that sits mostly out of sight to not look "boring", your priorities are in the wrong place. And also fails the whole premise of the video 😂
@JFat5158
@JFat5158 3 сағат бұрын
@ Hard drive prices are irrelevant since it varies wildly. Its pretty standard to not include them. I personally have all SSD storage because its just nicer being silent and more power efficient. I may pay a premium but I also dont need much space and it idles at less than 10w. I really dont understand how you can think his build looks like a huge ugly pc and think that a synology NAS looks better at all. Some people enjoy aesthetics in their home PC builds. Its fine if youre happy with off-the-shelf generic builds that you put out of sight, but people have different interests. That aspect of the build has no bearing on the actual NAS function and price of the build because it isnt essential to recreate it.

you went to the trouble of building your own case and you didn't have the foresight to make it a hotswap case. Hotswap cages usually drastically cut down on cable management. Instead of 2 cables per drive of routing, depending on the backplane used, it could be 2 cables for 4 drives (in the case of mini-SAS HD cables) or more with oculink. You could still 3d print the cages since backplanes are a separate BOM item. Just design a cage and caddy setup for the backplane. Make a hinge on the front fan bracket so that the fan swings out of the way when you need to work on a drive so you can slide it out of the case. Also, TrueNAS Scale 24.10 and above is far from difficult and "scary". Old versions of SCALE were because they used Kubernetes whereas SCALE 24.10 uses Docker and Docker Compose instead of Kubernetes. You can literally paste in a Docker Compose file to stand up services.

Just gotta remember a HDD has an average lifespan of 3-5 years, so put that in your budget. If you have a proper NAS and you're not super unlucky they shouldn't all die at once, but without a RAID option you cannot be sure your data won't disappear.

@@fffmpeg For people this is aimed at, who doesn't want to pay for 3rd party backups. RAID is your best bet at a backup system. Just figured it was important to note that if you're putting everything locally you need to have the HDD lifespan in mind. Because that is also a cost in the long term. It is not a perfect system yes, but it's significantly better than having just 3-5 HDDs setup without a RAID option.

I think if you split the drives into two 3-high towers that are next to each other you could've fit them into the gap above the mainboard and thus make the whole package even smaller :D Better yet, you couldve used a 12V powerbrick, or if you want it internal, a used server PSU with platinum / titanium efficiency can be had for cheap and power the mainboard itself with a pico psu

I've built my own home server (just the server part) using an old MB I had laying around from a previous build and a used 10900K I got off ebay for a steal. In total I think it cost me 300$ for probably about the same performance. Sure, the AMD 7945HX has more cores so it'll probably be slightly faster but I feel like this build was overly expensive, especially when the used market is so abundant right now. Also, there is no GPU for on the fly transcoding which is an option in plex if you pay for the service so you can watch native 4k videos. Which you can just pick up a used 3080 for like 400$ (mines just rocking an old 1070ti). Unsure why the extreme budget on this one. Still a super cool build and grats on making it look awesome but if you're looking to do this yourself at home, build a used PC from about 4 generations ago with a slightly newer GPU and go with a PCI-E HBA so you can use used SAS drives which are a 1/3rd the price of SATA drives and they're also meant to be ran 24/7 (most are used in cloud storage facilities/data storage facilities).

He may have a bigger budget than most people for his hardware, but that doesn't mean the same principle doesn't apply to you and that you can't do this unless you spend x amount of money. You can get pretty beefy drives for pretty cheap on the used market or just get 8TB drives instead and still have enough to store anything you want.

Video streaming services are not just about streaming videos, surprisingly. It's also about curating content. Choice paralysis is the reason why you have thousands of content on Netflix but you would never watch most of them unless they added "leaving soon" or "recently added". Curation doesn't come free, neither do building a server nor maintaining it.

Y'all dont understand, ofc it can get really expensive to make a nas/media server, but you dont need a setup like him. Its really simple to buy a $50-100 old business desktop and get the amount of HDD that you want. Streaming is unreliable,low quality, constantly changing price and what content it shows. With a media server you have control what you want to watch, either from blu ray rips to pirate ships. The cost long term will pay for it self.
