In this episode of the Billy Yang Podcast, I sat down with ultra athlete Zach Miller for a podcast talking running and racing, coming back from injury and some of his overall life philosophy. The conversation picks up where we last saw Zach in his film as a caretaker at Barr Camp to a now, a life on the road in his converted bus traveling through North America. We cover our summer at Hardrock, uncertainty around coming back from his injury, the pros and cons of social media, the recent passing of his grandmother and her legacy and much more.

So happy to see Zach in the process of recovery. I met him at hyner in PA when he set the 25k course record; super friendly and even laughed at my stupid joke about using his trophy axe to split wood at Barr Camp 😂 I saw him there again the following year, but not at the finish. He was at the top of the first big climb of the course where a crowd gathers to cheer the runners on. There he was, on crutches and with his foot in a boot, cheering us all on. I felt so much respect for him in that moment. Seems like he's been plagued with injuries ever since then. So glad to watch this and hear that it sounds like he's turned a corner. Also one last comment, early on he talks about not being fast anymore or his best years being behind him? No worries Zach, look at Jeff Browning and Karl Meltzer. Plenty of time for recovery and plenty of 💯 millers out there.

Thanks for this Billy! Having an opportunity to confirm that Zach is the unselfish person he is and wanting to make that impact with others. That is a true servant leader.

I subscribe to about 6 podcasts, and once in a while lately, I click on the billy yang podcast and then go :-( So, its so lovely, to see this new podcast/video Billy. Its great to have you back. Your insight, your knowledge and your passion is one of the main reasons that got me into trail running a few years back.

"Socially capable introvert" I like that. I get most my energy being introverted and when im having fun in social activities my battery drains. Then its time to recharge.

Thanks for the update Billy and Zach! I'm a big fan and would love to see Zach back in the ultra circuit. Good luck to both of you. About mentally and physically recovering from a serious injury: 5 years ago I injured my left ankle while running local MB trails, went to the wrong doctor who screwed up big time killing the nerve and the bones in my ankle. A year later they had to amputate my left foot so that I had a chance to walk again. Three weeks ago I bought a recumbent bike and the absolute thrill of being able to move under my own power gave me hope. I may never be able to run much anymore because prosthesis aren't good enough, but now that I'm on a bike again I feel free. I hope that you recover and find happiness in that recovery even if you can't get back to your previous form. Good luck to both of you and safe running.

Love it, thanks Billy & Zach for this! Zach, not sure if you or your parents ever saw the film "Animals Are Beautiful People" (produced by the same South African company that did The gods Must Be Crazy), but in there a Bushman is in the Kalahari and needs to find water, so he makes sure the baboons are watching him, then he puts something in a hole in the side of a termite hill. The hole is big enough to fit the opened hand, but when the baboon closes his hand around the object (food item, salt?), he can't get his fist out of the hole...and even when the man comes to grab the baboon, he refuses to let go of the object (and open his fist), so the man captures him. He then keeps him tied up for a few days until the baboon is super thirsty, then lets him go and runs after him - sure enough, the baboon leads him to an underground spring & precious water!

Love the raccoon explanation. It could apply to a lot of human action. I have many friends that literally worked themselves to death by chasing “shiny objects” - wealth over living. Great interview. Go Zach! 😀🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

That raccoon story is like the Simpsons episode where Homer gets his hand stuck in the vending machine and they are about to cut off his arm until they realize he's just holding on to the can. Classic.
