This really resonates with me. When I shorten the swing a bit, I always hit it better and I stop a lot of swaying and unnecessary movement that kills the swing. But then I forget this lesson until I discover it again the next season.

Enjoyed your instruction on shortening the backswing. /Starting back after 25YEARS, so you can imagine all the mistakes in my game. So far, driving it well, putting well, but everything from the fairway in is a problem. I am 79 years old, in good shape, so I feel there is no reason to be mediocre.

Excellent video. Thank you from an old man (74 yo. Marine Corps veteran) who has been snatching the club inside and overswinging for many years.

Need for head speed seems better with longer backswing. Keeping hands/arms/shoulders in a power unit more difficult there. Good video instruction; finding one’s best backswing!

This was one of the best lessons I have ever seen. Easy to understand, makes perfect sense, and much easier to implement than the long backswing. Thanks for sharing.

Great video Zach I’ve got a compact swing after getting too long a swing and then getting hippy now more relaxed and controlled.

I really appreciate your video! What I am also hearing is that one should stay true to one’s flexibility, ability, or age (for that matter) such that to maintain the most consistent form during the backswing to allow the most consistent and appropriate form during impact. I realized that when I tried to force myself to stretch my backswing further beyond what my body can handle, my left (leading) arm starts to bend, may back begins to straighten up, and my head starts to move up. I feel at that point my form “falls apart”, leading to poor impact, and lost distance. Since I refrained myself from over “stretching” my backswing, I was able to hit farther, and with less effort. It seems everyone will have a different limit on his or her backswing before the form breaks down. By practicing, hopefully one can find that sweet spot. I realize this whole issue just a few days ago before coming across your video. I just want to validate your point that what you are saying is extremely true! I experienced it first hand. Thank you for sharing these valuable insights!

I’m 76 years young, I have been working on playing a draw for more distance. I’m very interested in your info on the swing, I seem to be able to hit a good drive but then my approach shots are not as good as they should be. Any ideas I could work on ?

Zach, I have viewed 2 videos on the same topic .... (The Trail elbow at impact), by Danny Maude and Eric Cogorno), where they talk about the front of the trail elbow facing forward and close to the rib cage at impact, which helps to create a natural "Forward Shaft Lean." Question¹: Do you advocate this? Question²: If you do, should I try and "Preset the Trail Elbow" as I set-up to the ball? Thank you.

Zach, does this require an adjustment in tempo? 3 to 1 my need to be 2.5 or so to 1.

My problem with a long backswing is it’s always inconsistent..never know which way my wrists will flop around at the top. It seems to me that a shorter backswing would almost with certainty eliminate any casting of the right hand because it stays in the right position without having to reroute it on the way down. Looking at Rahm and Finau for example they certainly do not over swing one bit.

Over swing has been bane of my golfing life. I seem to be able to manage to not do it with driver but everything else just collapses. What feeling or thought process do you have to keep swing short, and not have arms collapse??
@rackum44 Жыл бұрын
Most times are not when you do overswing you definitely come out of your posture at least that's what I do so I really try to think of staying in posture and a backswing. And I don't like calling it shortening my back swing I like to call it don't overswing

Zach, when I tuck my trail elbow into my ribs, I get the opposite of forward shaft lean; I get a high, weak shot falling right and short. Any suggestions?
@NickMart19852 жыл бұрын
Sounds like your getting "stuck" and then flipping the hands to compensate. Probably because your hips aren't opening up enough to rotate through the ball before impact.

That isn't the issue in what goes on. If people teach you badly you end up doing that which is what modern golf instructors keeps doing.
