Society - especially in the digital age - can be a hurtful place. Today we’re unpacking one of the most damaging questions we’ve received to shine some light on the truth of having children. The question: Why would you bring kids into this world when you knew they might have dwarfism?
Welcome back to Raising Heights with Zach and Tori Roloff. In this episode, we talk about the reality of having kids in today’s world of choices and medical advancement and why you shouldn’t let society dictate whether you choose to grow your family.
Medical challenges, physical and mental differences and obstacles can happen to anyone. That doesn’t make anyone make anyone undeserving of having and growing a family.
Listen to our conversation breaking down:
➡️ The power (and dangers) of medical advancement and choice
➡️ Why society needs to drop the hate and embrace differentness
➡️ Society has a problem, and it’s up to all of us to change perceptions
➡️ Upcoming LPA conference - balancing expectations and why we’re so excited
00:00 - Intro
05:35 - Parenting challenges and emotional struggles with three young children
09:15 - Comedy show, and personal growth
13:10 - Travel, and history
18:19 - Attending a convention for people with dwarfism in Washington, DC
21:20 - Parenting and involvement in sports for children with dwarfism
28:33 - Probability of having dwarf children, family vacations, and parenting decisions
32:21 - Dwarfism, genetics, and reproductive choices
39:18 - Parenting children with dwarfism, society's expectations, and resilience
45:23 - Society's treatment of children with dwarfism
50:40 - Parenting children with disabilities and the importance of education and support

Why would you bring children into a loving family in a loving home? Scandalous! Every soul born into this world has challenges. Our job, as humans, is to not add to them by inflicting our own fears and prejudices on each other. Your family is a great example of love in action. Thank you for sharing!!!

I understand how you feel. I chose to adopt a child from a third world country that had severe disabilities. He had just as much “rights” to have a family than any other person. It was the best decision I ever made. I was a single parent and gave my all to him. He was the joy of my life despite him not being able to sit up, roll over, walk or “verbally speak”. He was able to communicate through his eyes and vibrant facial expressions. He loved watching all kinds of tv shows and movies. The funnier the better. His sense of humor was so obvious. Sadly he was a very bright person trapped in a body that didn’t cooperate for him most of the time. As he aged he went through many medical challenges and emergencies. The hardest decision was when I had to choose to place him on hospice and remove him from his ventilator before he had his one last major medical crisis. He absolutely hated being in the hospital and I gave him the gift of passing away in his own dayroom at home with medical professionals and loving family around him. The hardest decision of my life. He lived for 28 years and every minute he was alive was a blessing. He taught his cousin’s how to be compassionate to all people despite skin color or disabilities. Myself and my family had his back no matter how people looked at him or spoke about him. He was my hero who lived life in full bloom and didn’t care how people stared at him, pointed or laughed at him. He was loved and was the happiest person despite the pain and medical issues he endured. I will stand up to any person who would say he didn’t have a ‘right” to be alive or have a family. I pity people who choose to not want to love, protect or cherish any human being that God created. Zach and Tori your children are the cutest and sweetest little ones I’ve seen on tv/social media. They are so lucky to be born and have the perfect parents who love and have their backs no matter what. As much as I love seeing you on tv I’m so glad you are putting your family and children first. May you all have the best life and keep on protecting and standing up for your children and family. Thank you for being in all of our lives. God Bless You All. Have a Wonderful July 4th.

You guys are some of the best parents on KZbin. I would ask people to please, just have some respect and understanding, and stop the negative comments. I love you guys, please do not let these people depress you, we stand with you. God bless you all.

What is "normal" anyway. I have a twin brother, as well as a sister and a younger brother. You wouldn't believe how many times I've heard, "Are Your siblings normal, or are they like you?" People don't realize how hurtful questions like that can be. I'm just as normal as anyone else. I was married for 15 years, unfortunately, the marriage ended in divorce because of DV. I'm just as normal as anyone else. Having medical challenges or any sort of disability doesn't mean that a person isn't, "normal."

I am glad I am on this earth even though it is harder to walk than others. I am 43 and just this year my aunt told me she considered not having kids because she was scared her kids would have CMT. Unfortunately the people in society who NEED to hear this podcast, won’t! My son has severe hearing loss. Yesterday was his birthday and he turned 7. We were at our community pool and he was playing with a beach ball. It got away from him and a group of adults were playing with it. He went over and tried to get it and they were throwing it over his head. My sister in law went over and said he is trying to get his ball and he is deaf. The guy said well he should have a sign on him!! 🤯 My brother and husband went over and to educate him but he was such a jerk! It is so sad to see adults bullying a CHILD with a disability and having no ounce of kindness in them! Very sad society we live in!

There was a little boy with down syndrome he needed help and asked a woman to help him she told him I'm not your mother I helped him . Once he had gone back to his table .I told her if I see you say that I will get you trespassed from here .The owner came to our table and thanked me for helping his son . I hear ya…I work from home and having the kids home has been challenging to balance that. They are bored but I have to work. Thank god summer camps start for us next week. My husband and I always have this conversation “are we doing enough”. My husband tends to get more in the weeds with this than I do but I keep telling him we are doing the best we can in the moment. It’s not quantity it’s quality time and quality doesn’t always need be to sitting in the floor staring at each other playing a board game. It can be taking a ride alone to the store and having a good conversation, cooking together, doing a chore together, etc. I even went to therapy for my mom guilt and she told me to stop being so hard on myself and at the end of the day to ask myself “did I feed my children, did I hug my children, and if the answer is yes then you did a great job”. Our big struggle right now is learning how to parent a teenager. We have both boys, 9 and 15. Also I have to say when we think about our own childhoods what matters, and I try to give them that. We are there everyday and our kids know we have their back and they are loved. ❤

So many people who find out that their child will be born with DS choose to not have them. How tragic! She has been such a joy to have in our family! Are there challenges? Yes, but we have grown with the them over the years. She is now almost 30 and has a full life. She does lots of volunteer jobs and just yesterday, she received a card signed by at least 20 people telling her what a great Bingo caller she is at the Senior Center.😊 She has purpose, as do all of us. And ashamedly yes I would have. However,I believe God stepped in and ensured my grandson's existence by us not getting his diagnosis until he was 3 months old. Now I can honestly say I'm so glad that I didn't know. To not have his amazing smile and being in my life would have been a half life. Yes,it's hard sometimes but he is worth it 100xs over. I have two boys, 6 and 3, and I work at home. What I've learned is more than balance, I give everything the fullest attention. From there I can find what each job needs in a day and let that guide how time works. I have to work full-focused six to eight hours a day. I give direct attention to the kids in the morning with dog walking, family prayer, and breakfast. In the evening I give them full attention with play and dinner and attentive bedtime time, reading snuggling etc.. I find giving my spouse attentiveness becomes the hardest part because family time isn't exactly time for each other all though we are together. Even the stuff we do as a fam in the evening that is the interest of the adults, church, cr, that kind of stuff isn't a date.

It was a super close exciting game I didn't think my kids noticed the challenges the other team was facing - towards the end however my 5 year old naturally asked about a prosthetic - I was able to confidently educate him right there instead of being nervous or shushing him - A nearby teammate just smiled at me as I explained how it helped the gentleman run - my son ended up saying something like "yeah & he's sooo fast!" so thankful for your words of wisdom

The lying isn’t meant to be hurtful or malicious. Your daughter learned something today. She learned had to process making a choice she wasn’t proud of. Which is actually a testament to her heart and moral compass. All kids lie. The best way to address it is to acknowledge the internal struggle she was having but making it clear that telling lies rarely get you want in a way that feels good. I’ve always told my son that if he tells me the truth I can figure out how to help him, whatever it is. Lying separates people. It breaks trust. It limits choices. So not really worth it. But it’s not about your parenting! It’s just normal development. All kids are different. They have different ways of processing stimulus. I wrote my masters thesis on birth order and personality development. Your middle and baby kiddos sound very classic. Baby your baby if that is what he needs. It’s okay. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. He will be fine. All your babies will be good bc they have parents who care. They have love and safety. They aren’t being abused and they don’t have to fear for their safety. So yall are doing GREAT! Have grace for yourselves. For each other and you will be fine! ❤❤❤

I have three kids . Boy- girl -boy like you guys. My first born son spoke right away but my youngest son took a long time to speak and I was honestly concerned . I spoke to a speech therapist friend of mine and he said that boys tend to take a long time to speak and on top of it he’s the youngest so it will take longer and that’s totally normal. It’s because the siblings speak for him. Now my children are teens and my youngest does extremely well in school, an exceptionally beautiful mind. If I can go back to my old self I would tell myself to chill out , everything will be alright.

I was born with cerebral palsy. It’s been a rough journey at times. As parents, how do you prepare yourself and your children for the long term medical issues and physical pain they will have to face?

@@brendadowns5970 sending you lots of love and hugs. My son had severe CP as well. I found that love and support carried my son through so many medical challenges. I was with him 100% of the time when he’d need to be hospitalized and was his voice and comforter. I am a nurse so I was taught to be strong during medical crisis’s and would give myself a time to breakdown after everything was controlled and he wouldn’t see me. The hardest part was when he was being prepared and during the ventilator removal at home. He hated the hospital and we were so lucky that the hospice team went way above and beyond to prepare for any emergency that might occur during this process. He was the first person ever to have his ventilator removed at home from our World Renouned Medical Center. There were so many moments when I wanted to say Stop! I can’t go through this but then realized I used the word “I”! He wasn’t going to improve and was deteriorating right in front of my eyes. Stay as strong as you can and reach out to your family and friends when you need extra support whether it’s emotional, physical or medical. I will say a prayer for you and tell my son in my prayers to watch over you. Hugs and love ❤️

It is so refreshing to me to hear posts from you. Your children are truly gifts from God. They are intelligent spunky and such a pleasure. Thank you for sharing them. The deep thinking and comments and talent from Jackson, the little twinkle in Lila’s eyes and her determination, and Josiah is learning from both of them. Don’t worry mom and dad he has two good teachers and good parents to observe. Love these talks from you I feel like you are sitting here with me. ❤

It just shows how little, or no, empathy these people have. I just ask myself if any of these people were in an accident and became disabled would they believe the same things they say now because disabled people, according to them, put a drain on society. That would also make them a " burden" to society as well. Children are a blessing, we all come in different shapes, sizes and abilities and that's what makes everyone unique. A bully is just around the corner no matter who you are. Not having a child in fear of how society may treat them is absurd.

I think as parents we will always have tht horrible feeling of guilt. No matter what we’re feeling tht emotion for. Because as parents we always strive to be perfect, no matter what the reason is. Tht is one thing tht we can never reach, unfortunately. Even tho we’re not perfect as parents, doesn’t mean tht our kids don’t turn out to be good kids. I think we put to much on ourselves and when we feel like we didn’t do whatever it was for tht day and we have those feelings they’re more of a “us” thing. Because if we really wanted to get into it, I don’t think our kids feel let down. It’s just all those stipulations tht we carry on our shoulders. I know tht what we seen on tv was only a very small portion of ur guys life. But I think I’ve seen enough for me to say tht I think u guys r doing an AMAZING “job” with the kids,💯👍🏻. I hope y’all have a wonderful/safe 4th of July 🎆🇺🇸 God Bless u all🙏🫶🏻 Have a great wkend also.

I love the podcast and getting to know you two more. I think Matt and Amy started a great thing with the show, in terms of awareness, that people with dwarfism are able to do anything. With friends and family, we were watching for years from Serbia, we didnt know much about dwarfism before, and it was truly eye opening and inspirational watching it. It is not broadcasted in Serbia for many years now, but we are still talking about the pirate ship, pumpkin season, and all adventures you filmed. It inspired us to never give up, and that anything is possible really. You are continuing this legacy very well, and not just that, the parenting lessons and insights, I learn something in each episode. I hope to be as a thoughtful and amazing parent one day as the two of you❤

I do think that this channel being focused on dwarfism and parenting experience is very valuable. And I do think people either strive to learn and be the best of themselves or they don’t. That is individual as well as society. A big part of it is our leadership and in this case we do need to look at it exist.S today we have so many problems right now with environmental repercussions. It was almost 100° here and I’m on the East Coast where this kind of weather does not happen like this and all we have to do is look at what’s going on in our world in terms of the environment and recognize, we are in a changed area in terms of our own lifetime. Never just say it’s a societal problem, please. it is an ignorance problem and a putting up with ridiculous leadership problem and we can’t run away and shy away from it because we are now living completely with it in terms of environment. And we have known about this and been told about this by science for my lifetime as well as the medical problems we now have in our society and people just don’t wanna look at the truth they think hiding is better and ignoring saves them from having to deal with it. It is an individual problem. It is a personal problem. It is a problem that people need either get up and learn and become part of the system itself to help change it. If you hide away, you will never see the light. Keep on bringing us the light from your perspective. The world can take any teaching efforts because it needs so many things to wake them up. I think prayer is huge at this moment in time and not just asking for help, but also being respectful to those that are in our next existence, which I call heaven, but it doesn’t really matter what your religious believes or just that you have some and perspective of goodness and kindness and love. Because that’s what’s left after it’s all said and done. And either you have grown and developed and appeared in the utmost beauty while you were here on earth or you haven’t. Again that’s a personal problem in my opinion and each one of us are responsible for ourselves and how we think about Things in the world. I’m tired of babysitting America. No I am fed up with actually. Say it like it. Is it like you mean it and bring the truth as you can. That’s all one of us can do and we’re lucky if we have a truth to bring.!😊

I'm glad to see you all on this pod cast. I am a big fan of LPBW. I watched all 25 seasons. I agree with the person that spoke about how shy Zach was. I remember how shy he was when first dating Tori. I also loved how Tori loved him regardless of how shy he was. Now, he just flows with conversation between the two of them over the years. He reminded me of myself because I was more introverted. I had to and still have to, at age 64, have space and time to warm up to people. You both are doing an amazing job raising your children. ❤
