Katy Perry shouldve kept the sound of harley and hawaiis and delved into that. The funky 70s sound that acts like silk sonic and dua lipa were pushing into the mainstream again wouldve been new for her but also wouldve allowed her to be camp and with the retro aesthetic that she had during her debut and teenage dream

Yes!! I honestly think she's had some amazing album tracks off Witness and Smile like save as a draft, mind maze, only love, daises etc. Just songs that you can tell are really authentic and personal to her. My issue with her is most of the singles she chooses to release are horrendous and sound like something from 2010 (and not in a good way), and I think that's what lead to her downfall. I think Zach is exactly right - people like Gaga, Nicki and Rihanna have stepped away from that and look at them now they're still doing really well.

After she released Prism, which was a huge hit, it started to go downhill and not because her music got worse, but i think a mixture of personal issues (divorce from that twit) and burnout maybe. Then she was MIA for a few years which allowed Taylor to swoop in, but people truly slept on Katy’s 2020 album SMILE. That album had SO MANY good songs and hits, frankly. “Harley’s in Hawaii” should have been top of the charts fight with the wall. But a bad release date and bad marketing of the album meant that it went unnoticed by soo many. Which is why this newest album is such a shock. How do you go from an album like SMILE, with brilliant tracks, to this cringe-fest of tone deaf girl empowerment. Did she read the zeitgeist currently? Since the Witness era, she has made poor decisions. She made BAD singles for Witness (mainly Swish Swish and Bon Appetit; although the Bon Appetit music video ate, many people felt it was corny and I can see why), as well as making the Smile album art and promo look immature and inconsistent. And now, she’s leading herself into ANOTHER flop era, once again, with working with an abuser, along with using outdated/generic styling of music, as well as releasing CORNY music again. Katy failed to keep up with the current pop styles, along with keeping a decent reputations. As of now, she’s only a known pop star from the past, rather than today. Oh, Katy…

Unpopular opinion but I'll be the one to say it. Katy Perry does not 'NATURALLY' have a good ear for music. She struck gold the first half her career from amazing producers creating the concepts and sounds FOR her. But that can only go so far! So this decline we've seen since "Witness" is really just the producers/writers she continues to work with, running out of concepts for her. She needs to either learn to create more from her own ideas OR start working with radically different producers lol. Katy is talented but her strength is vocals, serving looks and performing the material. js 🤷🏾♀️

The thing with Katy Perry is that she doesn't read the room. She is talented, she is beautiful, she has everything that a pop superstar needs, and that's what made her a pop superstar in the first place. But with times, she didn't gauge the environment around her and what people want from her. People were riding high on her nostalgia recently, and that was evident by the amount of viral tweets and social media chatter when she announced new music. Like there was GENUINE interest in her this time around, and this was her chance to come back with something that shows how she has grown as an artist and how motherhood and all the life experiences as well as being a veteran in the industry has shaped her in 2024. People were actually waiting for the pop-rock Katy to come back because that's where her artistry, her musicianship and her personality really shined. But nope, she came back with the same ass tired empowerment shite that came across as formulaic and not genuine. It only looked like she was chasing her past glory and mass appeal with this song, and not actually working on making music that's authentic to her or substantial. I'm sure this album will have some hidden gems like all her albums have, even Witness and Smile have those. But once again, her marketing and packaging of the era and the album as something having no substance has already made this era a disaster, and for that reason, she will flop commercially again.
@iCharLton6 ай бұрын
what's funny is that Smile is a better album than Witness. Never Really Over was a bop immediately and i remember there was an article that said Katy's team doesn't know how to listen to her audience as we loved NRO's sound so much, but they then released after that a song that was a lot slower. Smile has so many good songs, but most of them are anthems and we have outgrown that empowering era of music, yet Katy hasn't. she is stuck sonically, and i think she went back to Dr Luke because he produced her last very successful hit, Roar.

It's crazy how people drag Katy for working with Dr Luke but literally turn a blind eye to Beyonće working with and giving Grammys to The Dream who is a notorious rap*st and domestic abuser. Katy is inauthentic. She always has been. She doesn’t care about anyone but herself. The fact that she partnered with that man for this ridiculous song and didn’t see how that would not go over well says a lot about her lack of character. She’s not a good person. Katy started out as a Christian Signer being abused by her parents and then got dropped from her label, busted her butt to get a record deal that failed and then got the deal of a lifetime and actually wrote many of her songs. She has been working with Dr. Luke and so have many more after what happened to Kesha. She can make whatever she wants, you don't have to like it, but you also don't know her to say she is showing her true colors. Stop projecting your expectations on someone you don't know to say she is or isn't a good person. This is music, she is not in any lane to make actual decisions that impact people like a politician would. Ya'll need help.

Morally, working with Dr Luke is awful and such a mistake. Musically however, Woman’s World and the rest of the snippets are absolutely kind of brain less, yes, but they’re also fun. And that is exactly what Katy is known for. Since Witness ppl have been complaining when she changes things up but when she stays the same ppl say she needs to change. Alot of the problems with her career are the listeners. We are also kind of the problem here.

it is kinda wild that Katy's been getting dragged but Dr. Luke had plenty of hits with many artists just last year alone, so the fake outrage is crazy to see. She was stupid/tone deaf for creating a "woman's anthem" with him tho as if it wasn't gonna get clocked🤣
@yoonbibaby11226 ай бұрын
Every single artist that has worked with him has gotten clocked and dragged for it. If you personally haven’t seen it, you should look it up. The only reason people aren’t AS on other artists head about it is because most of them have been contractually obligated to work with him and obviously they can’t help or do anything about that when that’s the case. And most of them have been open about that and addressed in some way. As Zach pointed out, Katy has said exactly nothing about it. Also not every artist is katy perry. She is-or was-one of the biggest artists in the world. We don’t even know half the other people that was working with dr like no shade.
@MsTruTea6 ай бұрын
@@yoonbibaby1122 you’re right, I know for the most part everyone gets scalped a bit for working with him but you confirmed my point that the heat on Katy is higher, for reasons that you mentioned. My point is no matter the reasoning, the hypocrisy from the public has been wild to watch & it’s more so commentary on the fans than the artist. Because it seems like it’s only “boycott Dr Luke” “we stand with Kesha” when the song sucks or it’s an artist they don’t like, but if it’s their fav it’s “she was obligated, she didn’t know, they’re not as famous” etc.. I do think the argument of who Katy is/what she has been known for & still working with him is valid tho

Something you mention in this video and your last on her……the writing. Katy left her dream team of writers and producers like Bonnie McKee, Benny, Martin and others to work with new people. Which is when she flopped. She could’ve brought back her entire dream team, but instead chose to work with the one person her label told her not to, Luke. She and Bonnie were writing magic, the writing has suffered since she stopped working with her.

I think Katy would still flop if she stayed in her bubblegum pop lane. Because let's be real, her bubblegum sound might be infectious but it's tired now. Like how Meghan Trainor tryna revive her mainstream success by releasing the same song. Katy would've been more respected if she improves her songwriting skills, collaborate with other producers rather than replicating hits and try to explore more genres that fit her voice. I also believe she's trying to capture the magic of her hits because she sold her discography years before and she'll be needing new moneymakers after leaving American Idol.
