His humility about holding power set the standards for all modern presidents, and he is the only reason any political office in the nation ever had term limits. And much, much more. Ok- but everything I have *ever* learned about the man tells me this is about right, he’s not after power, but reputation. He gives up power because it highlights him exactly as the humble figure you describe, he shows up to the second continental congress in full dress because he wants the clout of being the general of the revolution’s armies, the man starts the seven years war, mostly because he thinks he’s hot shit! And oh boy, does he bungle that one. The other thing he fairly famously does is free his slaves “on his death” which… is better then not doing that- worse then just… not having slaves, but I digress. That’s not actually what he does, he frees his slaves *on his wife’s* death. Which beyond bring terrifying for her, is also the end of his bloodline! He had no children, so he freed his slaves, the moment it stopped being inconvenient for him or his family.
