Nonvoluntary Arch user here. Only use arch if you already have experience with Linux or have a general idea about trouble shooting steps When things don't install well. If you really want to use Arch, which I personally strangely recommend, keep in mind that the Arch Wiki exists and it is useful. Also keep in mind that the AUR should be your last result for software unless the devs endorse the AUR package.
@Caellyan20 күн бұрын
I never ever had any issues with AUR packages besides them just not working. Using Arch is the best way to force yourself to learn how to troubleshoot Linux and how it works. After 5 installs you'll know most of the Linux ecosystem.
@terravida33319 күн бұрын
@@Caellyan I said it like that because I'm cautious about total noobs. Flatpak is still a safer option than the AUR and what I have problems with is the U... User... If you want to stay safe it is necessary to flip through the make file to see if anything fishy is going on. It can also wrack your system if the thing you want to install is not that popular and somebody made a mistake (like KDE themes...) sooooo yeah. AUR stuff usually just does not work but the moment you step on AUR you are walking on good but crackling ice that may or may not break. The "better safe than sorry" mentality especially when there is any chance to meet with new users is the best solution if we want Linux to be expanded.

Seriously people, unless you are a professional and require some Windows exclusive suite of software or your main game is some competitive shooter with invasive anti-cheat, there is no reason for you not to try and use Linux. You get pretty much everything you need in a PC and Steam did a lot of strides with Proton compatibility layer, most of your games will run perfectly fine. It's also gnome by default so it's pretty easy to start with, but not as much as ubuntu or pop os
@aemogie4 ай бұрын
Oh hey, found the NixOS user!
@aemogie4 ай бұрын
Also I should mention, I wouldn't agree that NixOS is a beginners distro. It's immutability and reproducibility, brought to the customisation of Arch. There are efforts like SnowflakeOS to make NixOS truly usable for non technical users (Which adds a GUI NixOS config editor, as well as a GUI frontend for package management) The choices are between that and flatpaks. And I'd argue either way, you're missing out on almost every single benefit NixOS provides for a desktop use case. Even more so when home-manager is involved. NixOS is an amazing distro, but definitely not meant for people who "just want to use their computer". It's for tinkerers (in the case of desktop use), and sysadmins (in the case of enterprise/server use), and most regular users are neither.

Assuming you have enough storage, you can split the drive into multiple partitions straight from windows, and then install Linux on the new partition. It’s really easy to do and can save you some money. Edit: Also, don’t be afraid to start with Arch. You’re dual booting, so nothing can happen to your windows install. It might be confusing but installing arch is a very good way to get familiar with command lines and the terminal, and you should be used to using it for Linux. I stayed on Windows for 30 years, from Windows 3.11 for Workgroups to Windows 10 and every version in between (except 8 and 8.1, screw those) and flirted with Linux here and there for brief periods, nothing permanent. After Microsoft's shenanigans lately, as well as the looming EOL for Windows 10, I decided to switch after three decades of their bullshit. Finally took the plunge and switched 4 months ago in mid-late April. First I tried Mint, but that was an LTS and didn't have 100% of the driver support I needed - I had to resort to installing a kernel-mode driver for my WiFi dongle in a Mint VM before I could get it going on bare metal. Then I had trouble getting Steam and Proton to work, and I was like, "is this going to work?" And I was starting to panic a bit. Then I found Garuda Dr460nized Gaming Edition, and everything started falling into place... got my games set up in Steam, Lutris, Heroic... running through DOSBox, WINE, Proton... most all of them work just like they would on Windows (if not better). Some were a pain to get working, but they're a pain on Windows too. One game in particular I couldn't get going on Windows, I got going on Linux. So for those who say Linux is bad for gaming, let me tell you I have Expendable (like 25 years old) running just fine - and anyone who's tried to run the game on a modern Windows setup will know that it's tricky to get running. Beavis and Butt-Head Do U, I gave up on. The cursor is invisible, so that's not going to work. But that game sucks anyway. But Virtual Stupidity works just fine in ScummVM. I don't miss Windows AT ALL. I recently dual-booted back into it to fix an NTFS filesystem error and I left the computer booted into Windows 10 for a day or so and just felt so... uncomfortable... IDK how to describe it, just... ick.

Been of Linux since 2021. You don't need programming knowledge to use it. A basic command in the terminal is easy and a must. I tried Kubuntu, Manjaro, and Pop_os, and now I'm on Ubuntu as my daily driver. I can play Windows AAA games via lutris or steam.

I had so many people try and talk of dual boot, but honestly, I am absolutely in love with it, having the ability to do both without needing to rely on wine or wsl2 is just so nice, and modern laptops reboot in like, literally 5 seconds flat, and I'm not switching often enough to care, and if I think I might, I can still use wsl2 or wine

The problem with that is Windows has a tendency to break Grub if a Windows update were to replace the bootloader. Putting it on a second drive is the way to go. You'd have to load up the boot USB for Linux, and reinstall grub to the partitioned drive. I guess you could use a Ventoy USB to force boot the Linux kernel image instead, but I don't have much experience with Ventoy, but I've heard it's great

It’s fucking crazy to think about how prices on windows keys have doubled or tripled in 4yrs. I remember buying a windows activation key from cdkeys back in 2020 for around 14 with tax. Now it’s 29.99. I’m glad Linux is free and the gaming experience is getting better, in the future, we might lose the ability to purchase it and it’ll become a subscription service

using linux has taught me a lot of things. as an linux user, i can confirm that. installing arch is not extremely hard nor is it easy, but maintaining and using it is another story. im a newbie myself, but to even some pc enthusiasts, maintaining arch so it can be stable is a pain in the ass if you dont read its cleanup and dont know what "rm -rf" do

Here is how you can be cheap, AND not rock that unactivated windows watermark! 1.) Create a new text document anywhere on your computer, it doesn't matter the file location. 2.) Inside the text document, type/copy and paste these strings of commands (without the quotation marks obviously.); "@echo off taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe explorer.exe exit" 3.) Once that is done, save the text document and rename it to "Activation.bat", no quotations. You'll know it worked if the icon changes to 2 cog wheels. 4.) Last, run Activation.bat as administrator, and then restart your pc, you HAVE to restart and run as admin or it WILL NOT WORK. 5.) Once your computer boots back up, no more watermark! You can delete Activation.bat if you want, it won't bring the watermark back. [DISCLAIMER: THIS IS FOR WINDOWS 10, IT MAY NOT WORK FOR WINDOWS 11]

The only safe dual boot is the one where you physically disconnect whatever storage device you use for Windows and then plug in the one you use for Linux. It's a hassle, but not as much of a hassle as Grub.

Steam Deck’s OS is based of an Arch Linux Distro, sooooo my first true experience with Linux was Arch haha. And I can see why people say not to start with it. There are sooooo many tutorials, GitHub pages, forums, and YT videos for Ubuntu based distros, and the one’s for Arch are there but they are very much meant for those who are “in the know” when it comes to Linux. Suffice to say it’s been a ton of fun getting Lutris/Wine to work in order to play Overwatch on a Steam Deck haha

If you're only worried about gaming, most games already run perfectly fine o Linux. Arch Linux is the base for the Steam Deck, so is possible to simply get steam games to run as smoothly as possible on it. Gaming is not a problem on Linux (especially on AMD hardware). As for work, you'd have to search if the specific program is able to run on Linux, or find alternatives. I myself, use just Linux as a daily drive, but sometimes had to use a virtual machine to use some specific engineering software. I like to persevere and find whatever software I need to work on Linux alone, since I actually like to own my computer.

Honestly, starting linux on arch isn't the worst thing ever. I used alma for a few weeks first (mostly through the gui) but installing arch and jumping right off the deep end was pretty fun. Domt make the mistake of installing manually though, use the utility. Manual installations are needed when partitioning a single ssd for.dual boot. Even then it isn't necessary.

You should probably try it out on a Virtual machine first, dual booting is great but wouldnt recommend it for testing out OS's
@SeeJayPlayGamesАй бұрын
it's necessary for *really* testing it. You won't be able to run commercial Windows games in a VM under say, VirtualBox because it's not a kernel-level VMM. You'll need something a little closer to the metal for real testing of SteamPlay and the like. But yeah, basic desktop use and basic native Linux games like KMahjongg or whatever, sure, you can get your feet wet with a VM.

protip: a partition even works. just be EXTRA SURE that you choose the partition because it WILL overwrite your windows install. also be sure to keep windows boot manager as the default, because if you choose linux and try to boot to windows, it will say it needs to be repaired.

Arch was the first Linux I tried daily driving. I only recommend it if you have a ton of free time and want to treat it as some kind of solo power user bootcamp. The Arch wiki is very educational and if you can dedicate a few weeks to learning and experimentation it's probably the fastest way become a Linux pro. Then you can wipe out your busted, hackish setup and install EndeavourOS or Manjaro instead (which are Arch based but configured by people who actually know what they are doing).

Migrating to Linux should be pretty painless for most gamers in about a half year's time. Already is if you're using an AMD GPU. Nvidia's also great, but you need some base level Linux knowledge to change the right settings.
