My brother had the same accident on June 12th 2016, he broke his neck at the c-4/c-5 level and was paralyzed from the mid chest down. He swallowed a large amount of ocean water after hitting the sand bar, which severely damaged his lungs. He fought for 15 months, but he passed away on September 19th, 2017, after getting pneumonia for the 5th time. I would give anything to have my brother back and have him home with us like Zack is, he never came home, he spent 15 months in hospitals, rehab and acute care centers. I'm so happy to see not everyone who has this unfortunate accident ends up like my brother did, cherish the tine you have with Zack. My brother's name was Kevin, he was 32 when he passed away.

I am married to a paraplegic man. He became paralyzed while we were dating from a spinal cord blood clot. I thought our daily routine was difficult , but oh my goodness your daily routine is much more challenging. You are such an awesome, positive young man. Truly inspiring. Keep it up! And you are so handsome, you will one day meet the woman of your dreams ;)

My step brother was surfing when a wave threw him head first into a sand bar. That night he told his wife his neck was sore but didn't think any thing was wrong. In the morning his neck was hurting more so they decided to go to the ER. After his X-ray they stuck him in a neck brace with traction and an hour later he went into surgery to fuse the disc and to put him in a halo. They said all he had to do was move his neck a 1/4 inches up and he would of been paralyzed from the neck down.

My story isn’t nearly as bad as his but here it is: when I was in fourth grade I did cheer practice with my sister and some friends, right next to where we practiced was a huge park. When we where done with practice the moms would talk and we would all go and play. When it started to get into the winter time it got dark at five, our practice ends at five. One day when we all went over to the park we decided to play tag, I was it for most of the time. I was chasing after my sister up the little steps leading to the slide, she ran down the other steps and right next to those steps was a rock step thing that had rock looking details and had different layer and height steps. I was running after my sister and when she made a sharp turn down the other steps and there I went. I went sliding down the rock step. The turned to the side so I didn’t hit my face but it turns out that decision would give me a lot of years of pain. When I turned my knee hit one of the steps that stuck out, I felt my knee cap shift and the Instant I hit the ground I new there was something wrong. I went over to my mom sobbing but she didn’t think much of it. I suffer from anxiety so it seems like I am complaining about something new every day. But, after a lot of days of complaining my mom took my to the ER and they did ex-rays revealing that I partially tore a ligament in my knee. They said it would only take a couple of days to heal and gave my crutches. A couple weeks went by and nothing changed. My knee seemed to hurt more so my dad got me an appointment at his doctors office where they did and MRI that revealed something we didn’t expect! They told my I had tendinitis which would cause sharp pains in my low part of my knee. I did physical therapy and a lot of ice. I am know in the sixth grade and still have excruciating pain but have learned to deal with it. That night I hurt my knee still taunts my and makes my ask my self why I decided to make that move.

It’s an illustration of the randomness of things. While I never swam in the waters off Newport Beach I regularly swam in the waters off Santa Cruz, the rest of Monterey Bay and further up off the San Francisco peninsula. I dove under waves all the time. It’s the only way you can get further out so you can catch a good one for body surfing. And more than once I got entangled in a bad one and slammed to the ocean floor and was dazed enough I wasn’t sure which way was up. It’s inspiring to watch this video. I’m not sure I would have had this outlook back when I was 15.

Exactly the same accident, I recognize myself a lot in you, I was luckier because my injury are C6/C7 and it's more easy to me to do a lot of things, for example: transfer in the car, go to the sofa or the bed by myself and undress me when I'm going to sleep, even it's hard, I can do it. I consider myself lucky. Hard to see this kind of video because she's calling back a lot of feelings, but it's beautiful too because we did a lot since the beginning.

What's a sandbar?
@iamwhoisayiam41946 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is four months old but I wanted to answer your question, A Sandbar is where sand builds up because of the oceans currents. Sometimes they are above the water like an island. But ofcourse they are below the water as well.

@sharpnicolecatherine7 жыл бұрын
Katie Wrona some have 0 control, some have incomplete paralysis meaning they have partial control. Think of it like when you sleep on your arm and it takes all of your energy to move your fingers just a little bit, but all the time
