Due to baseball announcers loving to say the word "eephus" - jumping at any (almost always illegitimate) chance to do so - the public has become quite confused, and has come to believe any soft, off-speed, lob-type pitch is an eephus. An eephus is a very specific pitch - one with a very high arc (certainly, at the very least, over the batter's head - though that is straining the definition). Eephuses, as made famous by Rip Sewell, who ostensibly coined the term, travel at steep angle to a great hight (in the manner of a ballistic missile), whence they plummet on a sharp trajectory back down toward the batter - the Angle, not the speed, making them difficult to hit.
