"You Spoke"
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did-well, really-what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Alright, a lot was cut out of the literature review section, because the entire video ended up leaning more towards a film analysis than a social science one, so theorists like James Hillman ended up cut. As a result a Man of Steel video is coming soon, because I don't want to throw away all the unused notes.

Oh man! I have seen the movie twice and heard "you smell good" both times. But i loved that line in zack's version because it connects with the earlier moment when the young woman smells/embraces arthur's shirt. I like the idea of the Justice League being a nuclear family, but I'll make a further comparison. The New Gods on Apokolips represent a broken family. Steppenwolf wants to prove himself and finally be allowed to come home. I mean his Macguffin is literally called "The Unity" which is his key to restoring his place in the family.

That is indeed an excellent extension of the comparison. Also, the individual boxes are called Mother Boxes & we see in Cyborg's mind that the three boxes show themselves as three ghastly figures (presumably women). If I remember correctly, there are some continuities in DC where Darkseid's mother, Hegra, upon being executed after her usurping, has her damn soul sucked from her dying body, then split into multiple parts & placed in the boxes that would be known as Mother Boxes, hence the name. So, maybe the three ghastly figures are actually three parts of Hegra's soul, still haunting the Mother Boxes & anybody like Cyborg who goes poking around in them.

In the Snyder films, Alfred has three roles; the classic Alfred that is a mentor, Lucius Fox type character that helps design, repair, and build Batman’s equipment, and part Oracle by providing intelligence and targeting information over the radio from the Batcave. Lastly, Aquaman literally calls uses the word badass when he first meets him. Great video essay. But Lois doesn’t say, “You smell good.” She says, “You spoke” because it was actually the first time Clark says anything since being resurrected. In the Snyder Cut, Superman remains confused and not himself after being brought back to life, which also explains why Snyder didn’t have him remember the events of BvS and taunt Batman by saying, “Do you bleed?” Just more things that show Whedon was obsessed more about inserting his stupid jokes than understanding the story and the characters.
@0g0dn0
@0g0dn0 3 жыл бұрын
Lois did not say "you smell good" this time around, she said "you spoke." While in the Whedon Cut, Clark had taunted Bruce by repeating his "do you bleed" line, in the Snyder Cut he was completely silent for the entire scene, and his reaction showed that he didn't even notice it himself. "This is home" are his first words since coming back from the dead in the Snyder Cut, and I think it's a more poignant first line.

Superman punching Steppenwolf through the portal is a callback to Man Of Steel, where he was convinced he could somehow beat Zod without killing him- he says "I'm going to stop you!" and then gets Zod in a headlock and just stops, like he's won the fight and now Zod has to say Uncle and go away. Zod says "you can only stop me by killing me" and he turns out to be right. In Justice League, Superman punches Steppenwolf through the portal, planning to non-lethally dispose of him- this IS a circumstance where you can just make the baddie go away! And it probably would have been that simple, if Steppenwolf hadn't taunted Wonder Woman so much and made her really mad...

The only other person who actually called the kryptonians by their name was the general since during zod’s message he didn’t introduce him and his group as kryptonians, just revealing that Clark was there and demand that he should be handed over.

While I don’t really enjoy Synder’s films (other than the weird owl one, because it’s just so weird), I still enjoyed this video. I will say, something I figured you were going to mention but you didn’t that I think is worth noting - you mention how the Justice League coming together is, symbolically, the reuniting of cultures. The thing is, all of the heroes are explicitly mavericks by the standards of their cultures - Clark the only non-test tube baby, Diana leaving home for the great wide out there, Bruce using his wealth to do good, Barry having a tie to the prisons, and Cyborg as a cyborg. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but it definitely would affect your argument, I think.

I actually think it reinforces it. These abnormal champions of their society are the ones to unite them because of their individuality. The reason these civilizations don't want to unite is because their legacy restricts it. If all red wants to do is be red, they will never meet with blue and with green. It isn't until a red accidentally or on purpose makes a purple, it then starts to realize that why are we so closed off, let me be different, let me reach out. In Man of Steel that's why Jor El even sent Clark to Earth in the first place. He didn't want to him to be raised as a Kryptonian because they were all set in their ways and refused to change due to some sense of tradition and legacy. It takes the outlier to think outside the box and to want to do something different than what their civilization or society has been telling them or intends them to do. All these paragons of their different societies both embody all the strengths of their civilizations while allowing them to be different so they can think outside of their people's conditioning.

Building on what cbear94 said, traditionally *all* mythological heroes are outliers of some kind, either gods or demigods who are a cut above the rest in some way form of function. Hercules ridiculously strong even by divine standards, Odysseus brilliant and clever, Atalanta a female warrior as strong as a man, Achilles almost completely invincible, etc. But like Jason that something extraordinary makes other people follow them, and follow their example. And like Perseus the deeds they accomplish make them leaders in their cultures.

@@ninjanibba4259 i think cause we’ve already seen a alpha of Batman in Nolan’s trilogy Zack wanted to show a new perspective and So his arc in BvS requires Superman. He needed superman to inspire him and the others, especially Batman for their characters in JL. Notice how in JL when Superman comes back batman doesn’t try to just brute force at him like in BvS where he was so blinded by hatred he didn’t even bother to listen to Clark asking him to help him with Lex. I think mostly that’s why Zack never gave them all a solo movie. Most of their characters were shaped by The League members. Such as Cyborg by Diana and His Father Aquaman’s Ignorance of his responsibilities And his eventual acceptance of it is shown by joining the league. All them are broken and alone in their minds but it takes each other for them to realize they aren’t.

As for Batman, same thing but I get the feeling that the studio didn’t want another Batman movie after just getting around to finishing the Nolan trilogy. They probably were hesitant on that which forced zack to make this. At the end of the day tho, this character is different from what we have seen of him before and was made to be that way. If you are a fan of this franchise & want to see it continue, them I would encourage you to read the article in the Hollywood Reporter, where they interviewed Ray Fisher (Cyborg), and he goes into more detail about what happened to him during production of this movie, and how both the director (Joss Whedon) and the studio, mistreated him. Then, I'd read the article in Vanity Fair, where they interviewed writer Chris Terrio, and he also had some stories to tell, about how mismanaged everything was. He goes into some detail about just awful those people running WB truly are, as well. People need to know about this kind of of stuff, so that they can make informed decisions when deciding what entertainment they want to support. I know I don't want to support nothing made by Warner Bros, til they make things right w/Zack Snyder & Ray Fisher! I'm not suggesting people boycott things or be toxic, but... I plan on being in the comment section on ALL Warner Bros related content from now on, screaming: 😤🤳🏼🔥🔥🔥🔥 #RestoreTheSnyderverse

A really good commentary that dives deeper into the hidden meanings of ZSJL. I'm not gonna lie, as much as I loved this film, I kinda thought that the movie was extremely shallow compared to something as loaded as BvS and MoS. But this vid made me realize I was wrong, and ZSJL was MUCH more subtle about its themes than those two movies. And from the looks of it, it seems like this type of more subtle storytelling worked better for the general audiences. It's also probably why a lot of them felt something "welling up inside them" whenever they saw some scenes but are unable to elaborate on it. I think your video pretty much uncovered the movie's hidden elements that were causing these unexplainable emotions and thoughts we experienced as audiences. One thing I have to add: As much as I loved this movie, I absolutely agree with you that this movie feels incomplete, even on a detail-level. It's interesting because MoS and BvS are movies that can stand on their own without each other, but ZSJL feels like a small part that was ripped out of a bigger movie. I think this becomes even more apparent when the movie didn't explain certain parts of the story. Like, why did Darkseid forget about Earth's location? (There was apparently a civil war in his homeworld, which could easily explain how his former allies would have erased Earth's coordinates somehow as a last "f you" before falling to Darkseid.) Why doesn't Flash just spam time reversal? (The movie kinda implies this, but if Flash reverses time to save something, then something of equal value will be lost, which explains how reviving Superman got Silas killed, and saving the world would result in the knightmare world.) I honestly would have preferred if Zack showed scenes that explained these problems, but it's clear that Zack, although having clear explanations for these things already, decided to elaborate on these interesting problems in the sequel. Stuff like this definitely shows ZSJL isn't a movie that's supposed to be able to stand on its own. But yeah, aside from this, it's honestly a splendid movie that takes you on big trip. If I'm not mistaken, I think you were pretty mixed on BvS, so it's awesome to hear that you enjoyed this movie more. Thanks for the awesome essay. I can appreciate this movie even now thanks to you.

My biggest and main problem with the Snyder cut is Superman. The movie does center around how Superman's death is the catalyst for the events of the movie, how Superman being gone is the inspiration for the formation of the justice league, and how Superman is the only member of the justice league powerful enough to defeat Steppenwolf, but it still sets Superman on a darker path whether he's a hero or a potential villain. When he's the hero, Superman wears his black suit as a metaphor to how he has changed, and he brutally attacks Steppenwolf when his job is mainly to subdue his opponent. I feel that the theatrical cut really did bring Superman back and made him be the true Superman.

Plus if he was going to kill Steppenwolf don't you think he would've lasered his whole head rather than his horn? Also what would they do after subduing him? Throw him into the space? What stops him from coming back with more? His ideals are still in there when he is dealing with earth problems. This concerns the whole planet. I'm not really bothered by Superman maiming Steppenwolf or participating in his death. In my book, you threaten to destroy the whole planet, you lose your mercy pass. Superman's never really had the endless mercy that characters like Batman and Spider-Man have traditionally had in the comics. Batman being a murder-machine rings far more false than Superman brutalizing enemies that can clearly take it.

Thank you for your video essay. As always, it was interesting to listen to and I really like your style of writing. Though I have one correction for you. You said that the final battle happens 'in tundra', but it is not. The movie clearly says that it is a fictional town near Moscow, which is abandoned after nuclear disaster. It's basically a Chernobyl -- just not in Northern Ukraine, but in Central Russia. 'Near Moscow' is thousands of miles from closest tundra. This place has the same climate as Pennsylvania or Poland. And the place, where actual Chernobyl is, is similar to Bavaria or Tennessee. Last time I checked neither Pennsylvania nor Tennessee was in tundra. It's like if in the movie it was said that 'a town in Maine was abandoned after some catastrophe' and some Russian guy said that this town is in the Wild West. Maine is not the Wild West at all! It won't even look like in westerns. 99% of Russians haven't seen tundra in their entire life, because they live in way more comfortable climate zones and spend their vacations in even warmer and greener areas. Russia is a huge country with an extremely diverse scenery, but for a lot of people abroad it is not obvious for some reason. I know 'tundra' was probably a metaphor, but superhero movies (as well as most Hollywood blockbusters) have been misrepresenting Russian language, geography, culture and history for decades and made no attempts to do it right. So, when really good essayists do such strange metaphors -- misinterpreting even the content of the movie -- it sounds alienating and ignorant. I'm very sorry if I sound too disturbed about such a small thing, but I really don't think 'tundra' was necessary here. And since I don't have any power to educate actual Hollywood producers and screenwriters I feel that I should at least try to tell youtubers I love that they have to know better and not to make obvious offensive mistakes. Of course, I don't expecting you to edit or change the video in any way, I just expect you to understand me and not say such random things anymore, please.
