@@matthewparker9276 Although, I think that there’s a bunch of “Extended” stuff that lead to nowhere. Like, we don’t need to devote 5 minutes to The Flash saving what I presume is Iris West in the DCEU and grabbing a hot dog. (Not to mention, the way he touched her hair was a little... weird, to say the least) And then at other times, there’s excessive slo mo for scene’s that don’t need it. Or just Icelandic song breaks that last for 5 minutes, which is a biiiittttt too much if you ask me. Instead of doing that, what I think they should’ve done is divert that extra time to showing StephenWolf’s backstory as a “Prologue” to the movie or after the Amazon attack, which would make us understand him more way earlier. And if there’s time left over, I’d give an extra scene to Cyborg at the end, where after listening to the tape, he starts crying and gets in a bad state of mood, and the rest of the JL find him, they just give him a silent team hug, as the camera does a close-up on Cyborg as he narrates, one last time, “I’m not broken.” Then the camera pans out to a group shot of all of the JL members hugging Cyborg. “And I’m not alone.” I still think that The Snyder Cut is a great piece of cinema, and a great movie. (In comparison to Marvel, I’d say better than Avengers 1, great movie, and I’m interested in the DCEU again when DC decides to continue the SnyderVerse [Which I think they will, because it’s logical and smart and will lead to money]) But if I do a video on it, I’m going to include those changes in a soft rewrite, because if anything, I want Zack Snyder to improve and for the other movies to become greater and greater. So yeah, that’s my criticism, review, and my thoughts. Yeeeeeeeee.... Sorry for long comment, Rah rah Rasputin.

i think the bigger less talked about benefit of giving Steppenwolf a motivation in the Snyder cut is that it makes Darkseid even more imposing and directly malevolent. Darkseid's an evil dude so obsessed with domination and so callously brutal even to his own men that he refused to allow someone powerful enough to destroy our world the ability to return to their home. Darkseid has such a stranglehold on Steppenwolf, a creature only beaten by a team of 2 metahumans, a Kryptonian, the rightful king and queen of atlantis and the amazons --- Darkseid pushed Steppenwlf to a point of so much desperation that just to get a chance to speak with Darksied, he would have to literally destroy all of humanity, AND atlantis, AND the amazons before even being allowed to talk to this guy. That's actually an amazing job at putting Darkseid way outside of our current scope of power-scaling for the justice league
@thebatmanofneo-gotham56673 жыл бұрын
What I find interesting about the motivation of Snyder's Steppenwolf is that it's a drastically different take on the redemption arc trope we see in movies and TV shows. Rather than have the villain do good deeds out of the kindness of his heart to atone for his sins, Snyder instead makes Steppenwolf still commit heinous atrocities like killing his enemies under the illusion of rebuilding his character. It's a unique spin on the redemption arc I never saw before, and the way Zack Snyder did it, or at least the idea behind it, is really engrossing to me.
@meghnadfilmclub23893 жыл бұрын
As someone in the comments pointed out, he has Zuko's redemption arc (gone wrong). Also, what's your opinion on his "proselytizing about death, destruction, and Darkseid"? I found it being exposition hinting at character. He's gloating about building a stronghold in his [Darkseid's] name as if he's trying to prove his loyalty. Like a villainous version of holding a "I'm sorry" placard. Not just in action, but in almost everything he says he's trying to regain Darkseid's favour.

@@meghnadfilmclub2389 I always find the complaint of Steppenwolf “expositing” this info to be a bit unfair. People treat exposition in general as a bad thing that should be exterminated in writing when it isn’t. As you said, it’s a hint of his character gloating about conquering Earth for Darkseid! That and not everything can be easily shown through visuals since most of the info isn’t really “self explanatory” or “open to interpretation” unless you have prior knowledge of the expansive DC lore

@patfer11893 жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone is saying ZS's Steppenwolf is a greatest villain, but rather that Zack correctly gave him a clear motivation to make the stakes meaningful. In Whedon's version, between the silliness of the 'smell fear' ending, one note 'evil for the sake of being evil' attitude, and lethargic investment in the action, the stakes are low. For Steppenwolf conquering is his day job so he just goes through the motions. Yes- Steppenwolf is strong but there is no sense of danger really. In Snyder's version the heroes will stop at nothing to save the world BUT the bad will also stop at nothing because he wants to go home. The faster and more decisively he can conquer Earth the faster he can move on to conquering the next planet and the closer he gets to getting where he yearns to be. And in this context also Steppenwolf wasn't meant to be the end all, be all of enemies for the Justice League. He was merely a stepping stone for the overall story introducing an opponent giving all but a hint of the challenges ahead. This was one guy with a few soldiers almost destroying the planet. How much worse can the guy who sent him with a massive army be? (We know the answer but this JL was building to that.)

Watching Apollo getting death letters from fans while he tries to make his daughters happy by hiding his disappointment and guilt really gets you to like him and sympahtize. Several video games use excellent usage of 'Static flat' villains as sort've 'things wrong with the world' type villains. For example, the Cabal from Destiny tend to be mostly just exploitive militants but they provide more than enough threat. @@nerovanguard846 Another good example of a "force of nature" villain is Sauron. Sauron basically isn't a character. His only motivation is power and world conquest. I don't think having a flat and static villain is necessarily a bad thing. Sauron in LotR (not counting the Silmarillion) waa pretty flat and static. A simple villain can work well if your srory is more focused on the protagonist and their struggle, and your villain is mainly needed to provide them something to struggle against.
@RacingSnails643 жыл бұрын
Yeah but the problem with that is, why bother having a villain then? You could have like a natural distaster or monster or some other catastrophe be the "villain" if they're just gonna be evil for evil's sake. Villains are characters, and characters need depth and change to be interesting. Sauron is iconic in a "cool" way but I know absolutely nothing about him from the movies.
@simonegreco19583 жыл бұрын
@@RacingSnails64 because a villain can and 99% of the times will operate as an antagonist force, creating conflict, which is what you need in a story. Yes this brings them closer to be plot devices, but you can't just substite them with a natural happening or monster. Their villanous nature helps the story. They need to be evil, and so, human. Palpatine is a good example of pure evil villain. He's just the worst. Would Vader redemption works if he was a "natural disaster"? No it wouldn't. You need to have Chancellor Piece of Shit. What I mean is that a pure evil ("flat and static") villain creates a kind of conflict that you can't have with other things, because of their evilness. It's not exchangeable

@@thebraydenchannel78 Was just about to say that! Yesterday I learned the news that it will be extended, which I really appreciate. I would've liked to see the characters explain themselves a little more than they actually did and also, we deserve to see them happy for longer than 2 panels per character :(

I can relate to Thanos wiping out half the universe. When you are extremely depressed or pushed to the edge of madness, you start to think some very dark things. Thanos is just someone who was pushed over the edge and has nothing left to live for...

Well, I mean, it’s likely his state of mind when he started his quest, but it on,y scratches the surface of the emotional complexities he has. Good comment bro

He had his farm he also had his complete conviction that he was right and saving the universe even if the universe couldn't see it Which mirrors Tony and his journey very nicely

There's a video out there called "Thanos deserved to win" or "Thanos was right" done by a channel called full fat video's which I recommended you watch. Goes over how Thanos is presented in such as a way that we can see how is actions are justified by him, and that Because of his will to do what must be done to achieve his goal's, we accept that we accept that his goal's are justified. Very good video.

This is exactly what I'm looking for in writing videos. I often find videos like these either surface-level to the point that they’re devoid of purpose, or else technical and niche enough that I don’t feel I can extrapolate what I’ve learned to my own writing without a better understanding of the fundamentals. But here, even though none of the terms you discussed were new to me, giving clear definitions with examples and - crucially - their value within a narrative is both useful and fascinating. I feel like it provides a knowledge base that I can use as a stepping-stone to more complex topics while also getting use out of what I’ve learned in the present. Great work!

I don't agree with you saying Batman is an unchanging static character in TDK imo Joker wins as he forces Batman to kill Harvey Dent to save Gordon's son. So in the end even Batman had to break his own law to win the day. Great video tho keep up!

I have absorbed more in 3 videos than I had in all of my Syd Fields books... Seriously! The lightbulb that you've turned on I didn't know existed! THANK YOU!!!

Darkseid is the best thing in ZSJL. That voice is just amazing. I really love how these villains are pure evil and not some rebel or revolutionary.

Joss whedon’s steppe wild has no traits beyond conquering. No true he’s also a creepy old man, look at his interactions with the Amazons

What if the Antagonist and Protagonist have the same outlooks or same goal, however where they differ and clash with each other's philosophies is their methods. Like both believe in violence as a means to answer conflict but one believes that Necessary Violence can bring an end to Unnecessary Violence, since there is the opposition bringing "Necessary Violence" to (in their mind) "solve" a greater problem. while the other believes that Necessary Violence can bring an end to a greater trouble overall, since that greater trouble requires a large number of people alive but removing them all would cease the greater troubles goal.

When Whedon's Steppenwolf was so confused about his hostages saying that they have families is kind of brilliant. Shows he doesn't hold the same emotions humans do, to the point that family is a complete alien concept to him. Shows his character through interactions instead of it being shoved down our throats through flashbacks. It is also kind funny.

It set him up as a completely alien mindset, instead of him just summarizing the plot to use for 45 minutes.

While steppenwolf says "then you have weakness." Cause he probably had a family either it being darkseid or Steppenwolf's own family and that became his weakness and whatever.. I got nothing else to say.

Except family absolutely is not an alien concept to him. He is literally part of a ruling family of gods.

I mean he is the new god and darkseid uncle so.

GAWD THIS WAS NOICE. I appreciate this breakdown as usual. Just great to be reminded of the character depth and development over all. Just the simple act of 'wanting' something adds many more aspects any character. It's one of the primary reasons the Snyder cut is much better than 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Awesome work, Savage.
