I first heard this in December 1980 when I got an old valve radio working that my grandma had put up in the attic. After hearing these strange chimes I was instantly hooked on listening to SW. The radio is still working in 2023.

that's amazing. I wish i was alive at those times. If i had a time machine i would go to those times first just to listen to the g03

Thank you for uploading these recordings. It is interesting how through the years you can hear the the tape of the gong/chimes deteriorating (the tape getting more and more stretched and warped). In 1978 it sounds pretty clear and normal, here it's a little bit warped, in the mid 1980s it's totally bizarre
@callumjoyce17124 жыл бұрын
I always thought that effect was due to poor quality recordings, I'd forgotten the days were you'd wreck your favourite tape by playing it over and over

I love the hum from whatever equipment they are using to broadcast which can be heard mostly during the reading out of the numbers. Makes for a more sinister experience.

It went inactive as of 1990. It dates back into the 1970s

The gong sound was most probably emitted by a Wandel & Goltermann Gong Machine from Germany around that time period. Though it's bizarre, because there are 7 different gong tones heard, and as far as i know, Wandel & Goltermann have up to 4 tones. They sound eerily similar to the machine. I believe that they recording the machine sounding it's gong chimes onto a cassette tape to be later played as intervals. The tape eventually deteriorated over time. The exact location of this station is unkown. (To me)

The other tones are the previous ones in reverse order.

@@stevendankewitz7830 I used Audacity to record it as it played, then I turned it into a file that can be added as a ring tone.

I've heard plenty of recordings of numbers stations, and this is the first time I've heard this particular one. Now in the time period this was happening, I was a toddler as I was born in 1980. It's very eerie sounding, almost post-apocalyptic in a way.

the interesting thing i discovered recently that there was an english schooling program with mike webster " english for you" that was produced in the GDR and england....where they talk about traveling in the UK and GDR...which means that there was somekind of cooperation between UK and GDR on official level going on....;)
@misterteaification3 жыл бұрын
Nothing sinister. The British wanted to enable the British Council to be accepted for visits and work in Warsaw Pact countries; there were little quid pro quos. Did you realise that there was so much "cooperation at official level" between the GDR and the FRG that the latter actually 'bought' coachloads of elderly and infirm people from the East in order to give them a iife in the West?
@MrRW19803 жыл бұрын
@@misterteaification well elderly people could have been interesting sources but noone ever dreamed that werner stiller takes two pieces of baggage and come to BRD...and that was a gamerchanger

Während des Gongspiels und der Übermittlung der Zahlenkolonnen hört man die ganze Zeit über im Hintergrund Morsesignale. Wäre interessant, ob das nur eine Sender-Überlagerung war oder mit Absicht hinzukam
