Learn how & where natural (non-GMO) hybrid stone fruits, such as the Pluot ® (Plum + Apricot), Aprium ® (Apricot + Plum), PeaCotUm ® (Peach + Apricot + Plum), Pluerry ® (Plum + Cherry), and 400+ patented hybrid fruit trees are developed. In this educational lesson, Charles Malki, Biologist & Plant Expert for ivorganics.com/ interviews Floyd Zaiger, who is known as the “most prolific stone fruit breeder in the modern era,” in addition to an interview with Floyd’s daughter, Leith Zaiger-Gardner. On this tour, 29+ Zaiger Hybrid fruit trees were sampled, most were not named & being final evaluated for mass propagation.
“Zaiger’s Fruit Orchard is where tomorrow’s BEST stone-fruit trees are born!”- C. Malki

Tom Spellman, of www.davewilson.com/ , also demonstrates the importance of thinning fruit trees. Dave Wilson Nursery is the largest grower of deciduous fruit & nut trees in the USA!

Your daughter is a beautiful young lady. She looked so happy to be there and sampling all that good stuff! Since we recently bought our home in San Diego, we just now installed a garden. My 10 yo son and 5 yo daughters love it so much! We use your product as a spray to protect the tomatoes and several other plants. My 10 yo has become obsessed with understanding pollination, hybridization, and production. Coming from the central valley, I think that's really great! (:

Hello Andy Rea! Thank you for the compliment!!! The pluots were truly an amazing piece of fruit!!! Hopefully, next year I'll arrive about a month earlier for the apricot & cherry hybrid fruit taste testing-- more of my favorite fruit trees. I also learned that cherries typically read the highest on the Brix test. I had such a GREAT time, and so glad to share this experience with you! Charles :-)

I managed to get some containers of Pluerries last year at the grocery store. I didn't have very high expectations (they were really hard), but they smelled pretty fragrant. After eating the first box I decided that Pluerries were probably the tastiest stone fruits I had ever eaten. Super sweet, crunchy, fragrant. I like them better than most Pluots I've had, and they're easily as good as the few ripe Apriums that I've tried. I bought all three available Zaiger varieties. I'd bet that most of the stonefruits that hang on the tree for a long time (plus being firm while ripe) are going to do great commercially.

Sure am glad to hear this. I have never eaten a pluerry, but planted the three Zaiger varieties I could get this year.

@@richardplace4856 Our trees are just starting to fruit now. Normally we have a pretty tricky spring (late frosts), but we've had 3 candy heart pluerries hang on one of the trees. We're also getting about 15 or so flavor grenade pluots. Should be exciting!

IV Organic you’re welcome Charles. Thank you for your easy to follow and very helpful information. I’m from the Adelaide Hills in Australia and at 71 I’ve had to start my vegetable garden from scratch, due to mistakes I’ve made in the past. My first job was to collect non pesticide cow manure from neighbour and after “curing” it, mix it with organic straw, shredded leaves etc, which was put thickly onto garden and turned, all 50 square metres. I then planted a vetch cover crop which I will chop and drop, then sew my summer vegetables. Whew!, such hard yakka. Hopefully I will never need to spade garden again and will have great crops this year. Yesterday I potted about 50 various fruit tree cutting which I’m hoping a good percentage with strike, then plant in another area. I think I was born to work hard, lol.

I'm definitely looking at pluots and other hybrid fruits, but I'm a good way north of Modesto, California and I'm sure here are other growers in the tropics with similar concerns.

on another note...@19:00 I commented yesterday on another video about my tree snapping in half. Although we thinned the tree quite a bit throughout the spring, it was it's first year with fruit and it was LOADED with fruit when it snapped. Entirely possible that it simply was too heavy for a trunk that young. Not enough stability and strength to hold that fruit.

Yes, thinning fruit is VERY important-- especially on high yielding & young fruit trees. As Tom Spellman taught us in this lesson, thinning fruit should take place several times during the growing season. Charles :-)

The problem with the main stream market is fruit is designed to be more tuff and to last for as long as possible; the most tasty fruit doesn’t always a-line with these values meaning unless you grow it you’re self you probably never will taste fruit that might go bad with In five days of picking and fruit that’s picked early only enforce this flaw.
