Zaine Griff - RUN - Live at The Water Rats London - 10 jan 2025

RUN dates back to Zaine Griff’s early period. It’s one of the songs on his first solo album ASHES AND DIAMONDS, recorded autumn 1979 by T-Rex/David Bowie producer Tony Visconti and was released in 1980 in Europe and Japan. In 2012 the album was rereleased on CD in different versions: a CD version and a carton sleeve mini LP-CD limited edition version in Japan. In 2017 the album was again rereleased in a 2CD set with the second album FIGVRES, with 21 interesting bonus tracks: B-sides, singles and totally unknown demos.
Trivial: in 1980, when the album and the single Run came out, it was announced on several radio stations as ‘the new single of David Bowie’, which caused a lot of rumours David Bowie was behind the album.
Later it turned out, Zaine Griff was definitely an artist on his own (as many fans in and around London already knew for years, but also that David Bowie had been in the studio during the recordings, but he was not involved in it. He was there to ask the coöperation of Zaine Griff and his band to record three totally new versions of his songs Space Oddity, Panic In Detroit and Rebel Rebel.
The new Space Oddity was used in Kenny Everett’s TV Show that New Year’s Eve, it was released on 7” and 12” vinyl and became a big hit. Together with the new and very different Panic In Detroit it was added as bonus track to a later version of the eScary Monsters CD and the new Panic In Detroit was years later again added as bonus track to Bowie’s album Heathen, with credits for Zaine Griff. The new recorded version of Rebel Rebel (more rough than the original - according to Zaine) is still shelved and never came to surface yet.
