Hi everyone! This video was a little controversial, so I have made a response video addressing the the criticisms and critiques here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWi6qKuPo56Hb6M

Agreed, appreciate the response but would you have left sooner in hindsight? Perhaps after the nice interaction with the white and tan dog I would have though a leash and straight out because it's hard to see how she then ended up under the bench but it may have been difficult to do that with the layout of the park. It's important for the public to be able to recognise the moment before the moment they went too far and I don't know that this is clear enough. Everyone is guilty of the 'no more one more time' mistake where you can only see the right time looking back at it, but the reaction video could have been the opportunity to clarify it slightly.

I'm so happy that you put a response up. Dogs need to learn! They need to make mistakes, feel fear, excitement and everything else. I was shocked at a certain comment that went on fot far too long that pointed out mistakes like they knew your dog better than you. And my simple response to them is if you don't introduce your dog to these situations, how will they ever learn and become more confident? And rewarding a behaviour by picking up your dog and removing her from the situation? Well I've never heard that one before. Being a responsible dog owner means remove your dog from a situation if it gets out of hand and taking responsibility. Well done.

I was very surprised that there was so much criticism in the comments. I do also think that some people easily forget that we don’t see the whole trip to a dog park but the edited version, which may skew our view of when was Inertia looking nervous and make us think it was because of the previous clip although time may have passed or not all of the things we see might even be shown chronologically. I do think you do a very good job with editing, but this is something I always try keep in mind and try to give the benefit of the doubt to the makers.

Please be careful Zac for i have noticed one of the people jumping on the band wagon about your dog training is the same person who the police had to step in to stop Harassing/stalking me, and therefore if he latches onto you please take it seriously. I think it's cool to try to respond to those with concerns when you didn't have to, especially since I'm sure a lot of it was not courteous. I think you perfectly addressed your own criticisms in hindsight, which good trainers should always do. And remember, possible good intentions aside, you are a successful dog trainer and YTer and most commenters aren't. Keep up the good work!

He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book kzbin.infoUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

@@lagottessa Hmm. I have been seeing some people drop in to be very critical. I don't know about you, but I have a VERY good boy. And he has been in similar situations to this dog and reacted in similar fashion. He does not like it when dogs come up to him quickly (maybe he thinks it is aggressive). I find dogs that are more willing to play (run around quickly) and not snip or try to push him over he does very well. I don't understand why people think dogs sniping or bulldozing over dogs is supposed to be okay, because it isn't. That GSD was too aggressive, end of story. I have not much cared for this Zak guy myself, but watching a few of these videos has shown me that my dog experience is natural (which it didn't feel that way when I was watching dog videos and how perfect all those dogs were, more like they were in perfect situations).

James Purdew it’s the fact that he didn’t recognize that her behavior prior to entering the park should have been a crystal clear sign to him that he should’ve NEVER taken that dog into the park. You’re right, sometimes dog don’t act how we expect, but 80% of the time there are behavioral signs ahead of time to signal when a dog is going to react. He as a trainer should have recognized that. There were SO many signs that she was uncomfortable and didn’t feel safe, when the owner doesn’t step in to protect the dog, the dog feels the need to protect itself aka it snaps. He knew she was reactive outside of the park so why would he ever think to bring the dog into the park? He set her up to fail

The fact of the matter is that he’s filming real-life experiences. I’ve saw many dogs at the dog park that face the same issue and I’m happy he’s addressing it. Some of you commenting don’t even see how your dog responds to other before going to the park and the same thing happens. No one was harmed and they learned from it. Your dog is going to encounter stressful situations and you work together to make them as comfortable and normalize to that particular issue as possible.

So this is not how to train a dog at a dog park you literally mostly reward her when she snaps at other dogs and if you’re going to bring your dog to the dog park you need to make sure she is comfortable around other dogs and won’t be aggressive and start snarling and biting them and you should have her one a leash for the first couple of times cause my service dog used to hate other dogs since he is a pit bull and when he was with his old owner they made him do dog fighting and they neglected him so he hated humans and dogs or any other animal so I had to train him to do better around people and dogs and now he is amazing. This is not a way to train a dog and I don’t think that you can train a dog and if you do train a dog you should know how to train them and know what their personality is like cause if you keep rewarding her for bad behavior then she’s just going to keep getting worse

Inertia isnt aggressive, she is insecure and reactive. Its a common issue in young working-line herding breeds. Ive seen it a million times. These types are slow to mature and are hypersensitive/reactive to nearly everything. Rough handling will exasperate any problem they are already having. Genetics play a strong part in your dogs behavior. Inertia's temperament is great for a farm dog but not so great for a city dog. She'll get it eventually lol. Anyone with any experience with these kinds of dogs knows that for 6 months, inertia is extremely responsive given all the activity. My more drivey cattle dogs were a terror at 6 months in comparison. Zak's just got one with some extra zest lol

I also have a 6 months old puppy and he is not a fan of the dog park but he is still the most social and confident pup you could imagine in any other setting.. so I don’t think it is fair to say that if a dog isn’t enjoying the dog park it is because they haven’t been socialised.. that being said I think the Dutch shepherd was behaving just fine and also been really patient letting her snap multiple times. Just starting to watch this now. I see a young dog that communicates that she’s very fearful in this environment. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to close the distance towards the fence. You see and hear how rapidly she barks as the other dogs approach. Also, if you look at her body language, when she is barking from her lack of confidence, she lowers her posture, and moves slightly towards you for reassurance. If she were my dog, behaving this way, she would have never been off leash. The leash, after all is a communication tool between you. My humble opinion is that you really need to learn to read your dog much better, and not be in such a hurry to have her conquer her fears. Keep her on leash, and maintain whatever distance she needs to feel more confident.

And that’s fine. His methods work great for dogs such as puppies. There is so many things that needed to be corrected in this video and it’s sucks knowing people are going to follow this same approach. Dogs parks aren’t a good place for dogs that don’t have good socialization. Get socialized first, than sure bring.

I think Zak is being given way too hard a time for this. As a professional and an owner he would never put her in a dangerous situation. No he wasn't going to go in but once Inertia settled and seemed curious, he changed his mind. So what? Don't we all do that? Inertia acted appropriately to the dog which bumped her, she told him she didn't like him that close and was warning him to give her some space. That's exactly what she should do, and the dog also responded appropriately to her behaviour. Zak removed her to stop the behaviour from escalating. Give him a break, he knows what he's doing. Not every encounter is filmed, and from what has been filmed you can see she has been socialised in nearly every setting possible.

I fundamentally disagree with a few of his training methods and definitely dont like how he jumps on the "choke chains/prongs/ecollars are abusive and youre terrible if you use them" bandwagon but i can appreciate the fact that hes a top of the line trick trainer and has titled several dogs in frisbee and agility competitions and in this case he handled it pretty well. Gave the dog a verbal "no" to give it a chance to chill out and when it didnt he removed it from the situation. If hes getting any flak for these vids it should be because hes raising an ill mannered dog that is a year old and still pulls on the leash and jumps on countertops in stores.

@@pyro226 by the time my rottie was 8 months old he had a very solid heel and was fluent in basic obedience. Theres no reason for that dog to still be pulling on the leash, and excusing it because they arent 2 or 3 years old yet is irresponsible. I have no issue with positive reinforcement, my issue is with people saying its the only way to train. I wouldnt call conditioning my dog to wear a chain or prong collar "punishment" i put a lot of work into making sure hes obedient and focused and he loves working with me. Its not even an issue of being faster or slower, training is *more effective* if you allow for correcting and discouraging unwanted behaviors as opposed to just ignoring them. Thats just me though ive got no issue with him not liking tools i take issue with him going out in public and possibly putting an unproofed dog in a situation where it could get hurt. If inertia had a solid heel and was 100% on top of recall and didnt react to people or dogs than more power too him, keep sticking treats in her face.

Lots of people seem to think their dog should like EVERY dog and don't understand why they don't get along with some. But people don't always like every person they meet, so of course dogs would be the same way. I don't blame Inertia for not liking those more rambunctious pups running right into her lol She's growing up beautifully though! 😭 Good luck with her training in the future!

Excellent point. I've had dogs that (just like me) actually need their quiet time and solitude to relax and regain their energy for some moderate social time. Some dogs (like one of my dearest human friends) thrive in crowds and make as many friends as they can and they gain their energy from this socialisation. And both kinds are perfectly ok as long as you recognise what your dog is telling you that they need and like. Zak was right there with her managing it as needed the whole time, he didn't keep her there too long and he stated that he doesn't bring her to the dog park all the time. People are piling on him in these comments but this was a great and useful training scene.

Totally agree, dogs have wildly different personalities. You can't just slap on a (usually inaccurate) breed stereotype and expect your pup (or anyone else's) to act like that. My Labrador doesn't fit into most people's idea of a lab and that can throw people off at the dog park. Instead of being super chill, cuddly, and loving strangers, she's suspicious of new people and dogs, hyper, likes short petting sessions but not hugs, enjoys alone time, and can sound quite vicious when barking. In other words, she's an amazing pupper❤️

swiggity swooty I am a dog trainer. It is my job to understand dogs, and I dedicate a grand chunk of my free time to studying their behavior and body language. This includes differences in behavior among certain breed groups. Albeit I would no longer so readily label her as reactive(tho she has a high possibility of becoming reactive if she continues to be thrown into situations she’s not ready for), I still 100% can tell that this dog is extremely nervous and fearful. She is not confident in herself and is showing clear signs of being fearful of the dogs around her. Again, she was not ready to be in a dog park yet and Zak really should have been able to see that from before they had even made it to the gates. She was showing clear signs of distress and was unable to refocus on Zak because she was so distracted by her concern about the other dogs. This “training” session should have stayed at a point far enough away from the dog park that Inertia would be able to refocus her attention on her handler. She should have never been allowed near the border of the park, let alone inside. She was reacting out of fear and insecurity. She was already *WAY* over threshold, and the other dog(s)being so pushy caused her to react with her teeth. She wasn’t herding, that was not herding instinct, that was pure nerves and panic. She was trying to get him out of her face because she was afraid of him, and because her owner allowed her to remain in a high-stress situation without paying any real attention to her body language that screamed she would rather be anywhere else. She does not need more face-to-face introductions, she needs gradual exposure in order to build up a neutrality about other dogs. Starting far enough away from the dog park that she can see the dogs but not be distracted by them, and *slowly* working up to the point where she can comfortably focus on zak *next to* the park. Notice how I didn’t say *in* the dog park. Inertia is not a dog park dog, she does not desire playful interaction with large groups of strange dogs. Taking her to a dog park would be setting her up to fail and react poorly, and it should be avoided. She needs to learn that other dogs being around her is not something to be worried about, and that she can rely on her handler to make sure she’s not in a dangerous situation. She needs neutrality, and she she needs confidence, she does not need to love other dogs. And if Zak wants to sign her up for herding classes, then cool I guess! But that would have nothing to do with this particular situation, as her reaction had nothing to do with wanting to “herd” the other dog.

She has such clear and open body language, the entire time she was communicating that she was uncomfortable, and even when she was hiding under the bench Zak brushed it off. 🙄 Inertia needs a balanced hand, confidence building, to stop being picked up and coddled and bribed for behavior. When she doesn't listen to you a treat just reinforces her ignoring you. I looked up to Zak for a while, then I got a dog and learned his methods don't always work. Ok... the main concern here is the training methods... He picked up Inertia while she was mid confrontation with the gsd?!?! No reputable dog trainer will ever use this technique! By picking up your dog, you make them a target to the others. It also stresses them out, and grabbing from behind is a huge danger as far as getting bit by your own animal. Please be careful - do NOT try this at home. Socialization takes more than 1 day to happen. She should have been given weeks, or however long she needed, on the outside of the park to gain confidence and comfort in her surroundings. The incident wasn’t bad at all, but Inertia wasn’t ready. As a well known dog trainer, Zak should have known she wasn’t ready. And he should think about the folks who watch this and go try it themselves, who may have a worse outcome.

You always stress to do all training humanely, but I’m not sure if putting a nervous, reactive dog in a situation where she is clearly terrified is exactly humane. I’d rather give simple corrections and avoid putting her through this experience entirely. Just my 2 cents though.

This is terrible. Lots of leash pulling and you let her lead you. She’s getting reactive and you’re fine with it. She’s not under control. Yet you increase the task. No efforts at recall of puppy. You’re reading her scared body language and ignoring it. This has all the elements of encouraging reactivity.

The dog is just fine. It's the trainer who's causing unnecessary problems. He introduces the topic by saying he doesn't like dog parks, then proceeds to go in there, basically to prove why he doesn't like them. Would he have done this if there was no camera crew who wanted juicy footage of dogs biting each other? Probably not, because he KNOWS BETTER.

Zak, please read this comment. I generally think your a very nice person with good intentions but after watching your videos, you have a very poor training ethic and a severe lack of knowledge for dog behaviour. Purely positive training is not as effective as balanced training. You constantly reward inertia for not listening, when shes nervous or scared. You never correct her behaviour and fail to redirect her behaviour properly. For example, one minute you will try to work on her with leash manners and pulling and then another minute you’ll let her get away with pulling and say its because “she’s in a new area and needs to get used to her surroundings” and your never consistent with your training. She’s never going to learn if you continue to make excuses for her poor behaviour and not reward and correct or redirect behaviour when necessary. You constantly wave treats in front of her face and call it training, say “yes” “good girl” or “good job” even if she doesn’t perform a command when asked and shoving your hand in front of her face when teaching her “leave it” will cause irritation and lead to resource guarding which she already does. You cant have something on the ground that she wants to sniff or eat and shove your in hand in her face and not expect her to get defensive around food. She’s learning to guard her food because she knows you’ll shove a hand in her face and your invading her space. You should not have let her get away with barking and pulling at the leash towards other dogs and you definitely should not have gone into the park. Dogs have a latter of aggression and she showed every sign just before nipping at that dog. A bite is always the end result. She was nervous, uncomfortable, had a stiff stance/movement, stress panting, tail between her legs and jumping up asking for your protection and safety. All those signs were ignored. As a trainer you should of seen and recognized those signs and left the park. You were telling her “good girl” for getting defensive and when running with her tail tucked. When she nipped at that dog, picking her up was a terrible way to defuse the situation. The Shepherd was extremely well behaved, it backed off, didn’t retaliate and was calm. Inertia was not. Not to mention having her off leash at a new place, she wasn’t following any of your commands and you had to physically hold her back from the smaller dog. Dogs like Inertia are what cause problems at dog parks. I worked with a trainer in the past with a previous dog and he trains all breeds including his own Belgian Malinos, he trains service dogs and even schutzhund (protection/sport training) he can have his Malinos off leash at a perfect focus and heel and she would listen to his commands flawlessly just by his voice, even in public (pet friendly stores) like home depo. Off leash heeling and everything. Never barking or acting out. He teaches his clients how to do positive rewards, corrections and reinforcement. He teaches you how to properly and effectively use tools such as martingales, prongs and E collars safely and professionally if requested or desired based on the dog and their needs. Bashing on people who use training tools is unfair. Just like people, all dogs learn differently. I have an amazing bond with my dog, he can be off leash and with one quick “kiss noise” he’s back at my side or just sits at my feet, follows all my commands and couldn’t be happier. He was a rescue with severe dog reactivity. Purely positive training made it worse. Balanced training has made wonders with correcting behaviour at the root and rewarding when appropriate. I have trained him with and without a prong collar and his bond to me is unbreakable and his reactivity is almost non existent. Balanced trainings and training tools when done correctly are not abusive. Just like raising a child, you need discipline and reward. If you have a kid that gets rewarded and treated positivity every time they act out or have a tantrum that child will grow up very poorly. Same goes with a dog. I’m not saying you have to use training tools but I am suggesting more balanced training practices and actually correcting unwanted behaviour rather then letting her get away with everything. Its actually reinforcing and rewarding the bad behaviour rather then stopping it. I have more I can say but I don’t want to add anymore right now as my comment is already very lengthy. If you send Inertia to a board and train with a balanced trainer or hire a balanced trainer, I bet she will be much further then she is now. Best of luck

I have a rescue that used to have severve reactivity on/off leash to EVERYTHING PP training made this worse. I have control over him all the time. Overall my bond with my dog is so strong now and I love him. The aussie has been corrected by other dogs so he's more mindful now and the collie mix has become far more comfortable around other dogs because of the aussie. That's actually very weird behavior from a dog, or any social animal. It means they missed some lessons growing up. Unfortunately because we separate dogs from their parents too early in many cases, many dogs miss out on the lessons their other family members would have helped them learn if they grew up in a family. Running into another dog or human is just as rude from an adult dog as it is from a human child over the age of 5ish. Puppies that don't watch where they are going get feedback from the adults that their behavior is unacceptable. They only get to keep playing if they carefully avoid knocking into a dog who isn't part of the game. So they learn to prioritize looking where they are going over the game. If they were biologically incapable of avoiding running into things when playing you would see them hitting trees and fences on the regular. You don't. Those hurt so they watch out for them. They just don't care if they run into people or animals. That's rude, and it starts fights with well-mannered dogs who are offended at being bowled over. Those dogs are why dog parks aren't great for healthy, well-socialized dogs.

The beginning of Inertia being in the dog park unleashed was good. She was running around and playing and was fine. You're acting like all she did was snap at dogs. Zak knows dogs and definitely knows his dogs. Inertia was just taken back by the really big dog towering over her. It scared her so she showed some warning snaps. Zak, your approach to raising Inertia is what is causing all of her behavioral issues and insecurity. Instead of engaging with your dog in new environments, and working on being the most interesting thing so she is NEUTRAL to her environment, you are allowing her to base her own opinions about her environment while you take the back seat. This is going to cause her to be...what? That’s right, unreliable! The idea is to expose your dog to new environments with progressing stimuli while SUCCESSFULLY maintaining engagement with your dog. Your dog is far too under socialized to be around dogs she does not know in this type of setting. It is more stressful for her than enjoyable, that’s plain to see, and you coddle her! It’s horrible! You are FEEDING her insecurities which is causing behavioral issues. I do not believe in purely positive training, but even with purely positive training, you can change your approach to training so you are still purely positive while having a different approach. Because honestly? It’s embarrassing that you call yourself a “professional” dog trainer and this is what you have to show for it. Inertia will grow to be more than you can handle before you even realize it if you do not get your sh*t together. Which will be such a shame, because she was once so sweet. Shape her world for her, stop letting her shape it for herself. Dogs need leaders to show them HOW to behave in public, not just let them do as they please when they please however they please.

I love the concept of dog parks, finding dogs that actually get out of their house/yard that love to play, but in all actuality it’s just a ticking time bomb. People bring unexercised/unsocialized dogs to get the 2-for-1 combo, and the well-mannered dogs get the hit. I’m so happy my dog was born extremely dog-savvy, she had tremendous patience for the rude dogs and the nippy puppies, but even I have had almost ONLY bad experiences at the dog park -edit- guys, if it wasn’t clear I approve of inertia’s behavior, and DISAPPROVE of the owner of the black shepherd, his dog was being an absolute brute and finally Zak had to pull away Inertia even though she was just defending herself

Show her she can have fun around dogs! Play fetch, frisbee anything around dogs to get her to focus on you and have fun. My aussie sees me to be more ‘fun’ then any new dog so she can easily ignore them and she behaves so well around dogs because i neverrr let a bad experience happen. In this video all i saw was many bad experiences for her.. she was not ready for a dog park.. :/ i felt sick seeing how scared she was it looked like torture :/ she needed a big step back that was too much.

This was simply bad "training " if you can call it that. You should get your dogs used to other dogs in a much more controlled environment first so you can prevent things like this. I dont blame that dog one bit for snapping, especially since it looks like the shepard doesnt have the best manners. My dogs used to be like the Shepard when they were a pup so I made sure to introduce them to a few adult dogs who happily put them on their ass to correct their behavior

Also he made her stare at the dogs from outside when she was already very tensed and gave her a treat. He basically didn’t reward sit but rewarded her tension. He makes her sit all the time for no reason. I think this video is all about what not to do when socializing a dog to new places. Also surprised that a trainer’s dog is so poorly socialized to begin with. I have never seen a trainer work like this...
