No yelling/negative reinforcement is also better for training. i made the mistake of negative reinforcement with my dog jumping on tables, now he does it anyway just when no one is around. with negative reinforcement they learn their action causes a reaction and it isnt one they want, so they learn that if you arent there then there will be no reaction and they can do what they want. if its positive reinforcement though then they will lean more to the behavior that has been rewarded. i usually do an even balance of the two, punish what i dont want, tell em no sternly and maybe a bop on the nose if they destroyed something, and reward every behavior that i do want.

@@alysani0193 that's absolute bs. You obviously weren't doing it right. People are so scared to raise their voices at there dogs like they're afraid they're gonna hurt there feelings. Puppies are little children. Even mothers in the animal kingdom let their pups know when they're out of line. And know it's not abuse. I raise my voice and let my rottie puppy know when she's doing something she knows she shouldn't. And guess what? She listens. I tell her to leave something a lot of the time she does. Of course she's still learning and it takes time. When she starts biting at my hand, I'll give her bottom jaw a little squeeze. She does a little Yelp and backs off. But guess what? She still loves me. In fact we draw closer. The bond grows. She learns what I like and what i don't. People let there dogs walk all over them and in the end the dog becomes I'm charge. Even my puppy which is only 3 months old sticks close to me on walks for the most part and Doesn't pull. Zac doesn't look like he has much control over his puppy. Sorry just stating what I'm seeing

@@spaghetti941 it isnt "total bs".. for some dogs negative reinforcement works great combine with a bit of positive to balance it out, but for a lot of dogs you need to swap up methods. trust me i dont let my dogs walk all over me, if they chew something up they will know they did something bad. its just for stuff like jumping on tables (at least with one of my dogs) he learned he can only do it when no one is around. so basically my only option now is a buzz (not electric) collar and a live camera. also yes a buzz will work because he is terrified of things that buzz, such as a cellphone.

What i appreciate most about these videos are the times that Zak points out when he is being lenient and why, and what is reasonable to expect at different ages. I just want to thank you for this channel. I started watching almost 3 years ago when we got our puppies. I'll admit, looking back we were expecting too much too soon. So happy we didn't give up on gentle training methods. We unfortunately lost Odin and not only were we devastated, we didn't know how Freyja cope with being alone. Pointers have big feeling and even bigger ways of expressing them... oh and are very prone to separation anxiety. Thanks to this channel, my dog knew how to cope(chews, bring us toys to play, find us for cuddles). The destruction I was told to watch out for never came. REDIRECTING WORKS! My dog is not perfect, but she's always learning and impressing me.

A lot of people say they can train a dog in a few days, a week or the like. Never happen. What they do is abuse the dog and force him into submission. I'm a former K-9 trainer, schutzhund, dual purpose police K-9 and the like. It takes time and patience. Train with compassion no compulsion. You're good sir.

@@pebbleinyoshoe532 To reach level 3 the dog must fully learn 1 and 2 levels. So yes to all - 1, 2 and 3. We trialed a few dogs but time was a problem to get as involved as we wanted to. We were more about training police dogs. I owned my own kennel and we dedicated our top dogs and training time to police departments. Most of the department training was designed, directed, toward training the handlers - for them to learn how to handle the K-9 as well as learning commands. Our dogs knew their duties before introduced/sold to police departments. We used German commands. We had German and Dutch shepherds. I miss getting dog bit, lol.. I decoyed as well as trained the dogs.

Love the idea of picking your battles, and allowing your dog to explore the environment before training. My dog is really good off the leash at the park, but for the first five minutes, she is not at all, anything can happen. It is always a process. I know I will be teaching my Ruby till the day she dies. She already knows 50 to 60 tricks. Some of them are pretty cool. My favorites are her sitting pretty with a treat on her nose and lip syncing. Just keep up the good work with ya dog.

Watching training in real time is encouraging. I watched dozens of videos on KZbin that were shot when the dog was already trained. As a result, my expectations were way off, and for the longest time, I thought there was something wrong with me or the dog. I’m glad to see the struggles of a professional trainer and the time it takes to teach a puppy how to behave. My pup is 9 months old now, and much easier to communicate with. He seems to understand what I want, which doesn’t mean he will obey all the time. I no longer have training sessions with him, but I am consistent in my expectations and that seems to work.

I’m so glad your dog is not perfect. I got all kinds of crap from people who thought my girl should have been perfect from day one. You know, those people who think they know everything about dog training. My girl is now three and I still have to train. Good video ! When starting the journey with my SDit I was looking forward to take her to many places with 6 months old, just like the other handlers you see on IG. Noo! My lab is 1 and I'm finally getting to say that we did huge progress with leash training and focus. Also dog encounters. I'm a first time handler and I'd never thought it takes so much time! She's no collie, but I've had her since I rescued her four years ago and she's really learned to love her frisbee games. We were lucky when training our lab about staying at the door. Our apartment has about a 2x2 vinyl section, this was our barrier since it was a change from carpet. Any time she left the carpet, uh uh and reset. Our challenges now are the counter surfing a bit and people reactivity. One question on people reactivity, is that confidence based or just not knowing. We can goto a dog park and she will not react like she does on a leash. At the park she'll walk up but as soon they try to pet, that's a no for her and walks away(she has a problem with new people over her). While on leash, she acts crazy but once sniffs and gets a few treats, she's a lovable lab.

Zak, it is so lovely to see inertia grow. It is really apparent from how tiny she is in the intro vs in the video. I have a 12 year old border collie called Toby who has begun to bark and snap (sometimes with lunging) when we go to leave the house. Zak i just wanted to give you a heads up! Regular tennis balls can deteriorate dogs teeth in the long run from the fibers on the ball. Instead of using a tennis ball i use chuck it balls! They’re made of rubber, don’t break at all and my dog loves them!
