On his recent visit to EMGtv, Zakk Wylde improvised over an Andy James track provided by Jam Track Central (tabs and backing track available for download at www.jamtrackcen... ). Showcasing his new signature humbucker pickups, Zakk proves he's still the Heavy Metal Viking of guitar.

GOLDBOND vs BALLS You're an absolute goofball! Zakk isn't trying to melt your heart his goal is to go total beast mode. That's it! And he does! He could slow down those m7th. progressions and solo over it with just a touch of gain and you'd blow your load! Again that's not his goal. Also, he is playing INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT scales! Very difficult and at a ridiculous speed. The dude is incredibly skilled on the guitar and ACCURATE! You would know all of this, if you played guitar...

GuacSucker to you, it might. But 40K + people hitting the "like" button suggests that it does not "fucking suck". So don't tell people "get over it" as if your opinion is a fact that people need to conform to. And don't be so vitrolic towards a professional guitarist especially when you have nothing better under your belt. As a guitarist I think some of the runs in this seemed a bit nonsensical, but others were quite musical. And there's also his amazingly developed technique. I liked it. You might hate it and that's fine but don't act like your opinion is a fact.

It's sad that there's no respect for guitar legends these days. Although he is far from my favourite player, Wylde accomplished so much for a certain genre of guitar music but is criticized for fucking around to a backing track in a single youtube video. He may not be everyones cup of tea, but i guarantee if you ever met him in person you could tell he loves doing what he does and deserves none of the horrible things said about him in this comment section.

Some idiot says he's not picking every note.. what a wanker who can't even hear sound correctly, then tosses out an insult like it has any meaning in the universe whatsoever. The guy plays rings around every single dude who comments negatively about him. I'm not even a fan of the guy, I can just recognize beyond light years technical ability when I see it.

+Marcus Lambert I see your point about people being harsh in criticism, I think. But I really do not agree with the whole "you can't even remotely play the stuff he plays, so don't criticize!" thing. I saw BLS live a few months back and he played a similar solo, only difference was it was about twice as long as this one. Style was very similar. Now I don't think there's a single doubt that this guy is ludicrously insane at playing guitar. I, for one, can barely play smoke on the water on guitar myself. But I still think I should be able to criticize his solo for being too long and point out that it affected the performance in a negative way for me. It's more like the stuff he does isn't all that much my cup of tea. I'm guessing that might have been what you were getting at in the first place anyway. Oh well..

@megamania501

+Marcus Lambert That "don't criticize unless you can do better" argument has to be the most used, but least thought-out argument on the internet. What sports team do you hate? Don't ever say they suck unless you can personally get on the team and perform better then! Hate Justin Bieber's music? Don't say he sucks unless you can get on stage and sing better! Hate country music? Don't say it sucks unless you can write a country album that sells more copies then. So basically with your logic you can't hate anything unless you can do better. Now is that really logical? Nope. Look at your argument further. With your argument if you can do something better than someone then its ok to criticize that person. With your logic its ok if Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali told all the amateur boxers of the world "all you guys suck!". Or if Donald Trump says the public sucks because they aren't as rich as him. Or if Yngwie Malmsteen said that Zakk Wylde sucks because he can't play as fast. Bottom line is, a person can say than someone sucks whether or not that person can do as well or not. Who was last in standings last year? St. Louis Rams? A person can't say they suck simply because that person isn't on a professional team that had a better record than them? That said, Zakk Wylde can easily play better than me, and yeah, I suck at guitar compared to him, but I have to agree with a lot of the comments on here...his playing on this vid is uninteresting and just non-stop wankery.

I've watched this so many times now. The first time, I was slack-jawed. The more I watch it, the more it seems like a "punch the walls, screaming" expression of pain, loss, anger, what have you. Fighters fight harder. Painters paint darker. Track stars push harder to run faster. Singers sing more powerfully. Zakk Wylde shreds as hard and as fast as his abilities will allow him to express himself. He's amazing in his niche. Can't argue that. Instead of hating on this instance of his playing, maybe try to see a deeper meaning behind what's being portrayed, through a blistering flurry of notes that might be likened to someone crying, cutting, using. He's employing a MASTERFUL ability here to say something, and so many people aren't listening.

Hey Wyldeminded It is true and I agree. Well said there. When I first was hearing it, I was hearing it, but not listening to it. And it didn't make any sense. Just like when hunting, you cant focus on one small spot. You have to sit back and take in the whole field of view in your mind. Similarly, once I stepped back and stopped focusing, and allowed it all to come together in my field of hearing, for what it really is... It's obvious he has incredible amounts of experience on this instrument. It has become an extension of himself. And quite honestly, I can see how people dont understand it. But I believe its because he knows what he is doing SO WELL, that it actually goes above most peoples heads because they are listening too closely and not taking it in as he intenser and hears it in his own mind. Once I unlocked it, it became a wonderful expression to behold.

Guys... Common... Why the hate? Is it JUST because of the pentatonic scale? Or the distortion? Or the nails? I can get the hate if he played as bad as Lil Wayne, but this isn't Lil Wayne, this is Zakk Wylde. A guitarist, a musician, he has a line of signature guitars that are tacky yet awesome 😂. I'm not saying he's the best, that's all a matter of taste, but I am saying... he probably can use the pentatonic scale better than you and still probably sound better than most of the scales you can pull out of your music major. If you think you can though, I'll gladly watch and judge from my point of view 😊.

great shred! people are just mad they cant alternate pick 2 note per string pentatonics that fast. zakks achievements as a musician are legendary. on another note: andy is among probably the best 3 guitarists ever in the history of electric guitar as far as technique and phrasing solos, and maybe the best alive right now. his riffs arent in the top 3 ever, but definitely his soloing, so why compare

Lets not forget the roots , Zakk , knows who the blues legends are . He can play the blues very well . And we hear his influences from Rock . Some people just get it . And become naturals . I've heard Zakk slow it right down when he wants too and just plays good old rock and roll and blues . I enjoy it too . It's nice to see metal guitarists go back and just rock and put in their own feel to it .

This is simply balls to the wall, un-hinged SHRED!!!! Yes, it's far from the most technically proficient playing and a bit sloppy, but MY GOD THE MAN CAN ROCK!!!! too many guitarists tent to forget that. Listen to those bends, those furious chromatics, that lucid chorous effect, it fucking ROCKS!! and that's the point. Then again, it's KZbin, where every dumbass talks shit anonymously...

People always wanna try to compare every shredder to guys like Petrucci and Gilbert, who specialize!! In super technical playing. Its like comparing a cashew to a peanut

But the best parts in this solo are when he slows down and take a feeling. I love zakk, but I think he shredded a little too much (sounds weird, I know). It seems that nowadays his solos are always the same. He just plays stuff really fast... I think he's loosing it =(

Every player has a favorite scale/lick/riff they hinge themselves around. Zakk Wylde is no exception. The only thing I would criticize him on is his crazy amount of wrist movement when he starts playing faster.. but hey.. I've seen stranger ways to play a guitar.

I will agree, he does have a tendency to put awkward sounding shreds where they shouldn't be, like his new song Angel of Mercy

Between the usual "Wylde shred" he threw some nice licks in there with really emotional phrasing over the chord progression. Maybe not one of the best like Randy but he is damn entertaining, a true guitar hero and respected by fans and musicians.

Just let the man play guitar. No need to criticize his tone or his way of playing. Just like anyone who has ever picked up a guitar and has a great passion for it you still play for yourself! Sure if I got famous and successful I would play for my fans and make them happy by making good music but nevertheless would I change my playing style, tone, and scales I used just to make some whiners happy. He plays the way he does because it sounds good to him and he likes it.

This thing is boring, it's just a pentatonic scale played fast with a lot of chorus the fucking whole time.

***** Yes, sense. This is a pentatonic scale played at 220 bpm. At least a pop jingle has more musicality than this.

***** ...or maybe people just want more out of music than aimless wanking over a backing track. The solo doesn't have much for direction, it's melodically and rhythmically simple, most of the phrasing is predictable, and it for the most part lacks any thoughtful musicality.

It's insane how this does not sound like a session of mindless shredding and a stream of ultra fast notes. Pure passion. Respect.

I mean Zakk is not a bad player but this is literally the definition of mindless shredding and a stream of ultra fast notes LOL no good idea was really developed here, he just shreds and aggressively does the same bend in between licks 🤣🤣
