In this episode we visit North & South Luangwa National Parks, staying at unfenced campsites and hosting elephants and hippos in our campsite. We see lions and leopards up close and have our first ever sightings of Thornicroft Giraffe and Crawshay Zebra.
This video is part of a series in which we spend 61 days overlanding through Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. In the process we drive 12315km, visit 16 National Parks and have amazing wildlife sightings along the way, including a number of species we see for the first time.

Thank you! Yes, it was quite a sighting and a privilege to sit there all alone with the lions.

Do you think it’s possible to cross the North Luangwa pontoon with a 4x4 trailer in tow ?? I’m mainly thinking of the logistics of getting a trailer on and off the raft.

A trailer would not fit onto the pontoon with the tow vehicle. So you would have to unhook and manhandle the trailer on to pontoon or reverse it on and then unhook. But then getting it off on the other side will be difficult. If you have two tow vehicles it can be done but will require excellent reversing skills because of the narrow clearances. Bottom line, I think it will be difficult.

What’s the campsite cost range per night?

In Kafue campsites worked out to USD30 per person per night ("pppn"). Kasanka was USD25 pppn, the undeveloped campsite in North Luangwa USD5pppn. In South Luangwa there are no campsites inside the park. Price of those just outside the park varied a lot: USD40pppn at Zikomo, Track&Trail USD17 pppn, Wildlife camp USD10 pppn.
