Not only it is confirmed that Haytham truly loved Ziio, but in a way he loved Connor as well. He saved him without hesitation even if he was an assassin, he helped him and wanted him to be safe, and maybe it's just my opinion, but he allowed Connor to kill him as well. It's a bit weird that someone like Haytham would forget that an assassin has a hidden blade and let himself open like that. He also wasn't surprised at all, it was like...he knew he would be killed or allowed himself to be killed. I feel like that was the only choice Haytham had. Either he would kill his son, or betray the templars. And ofc the words he said in the end that was proud of Connor. The line "I should have killed you.." I think he said it to not make his son feel guilty of what he did. Throughout the game, he was careful to not get too attached, but it felt like he was watching him all the time. So yes, imo Haytham truly cared for Connor. It would make sense, since he loved his mother.

The fact he was even moving at all after an experience that would normally outright kill a normal person shows how physically durable he is and how much stamina he possesses. In an outright fight without being injured Connor would definitely be able to beat Haytham and every time Haytham's gotten the upper hand on Connor within the story it's been through a sneak attack or because Connor's already too exhausted and injured to fight him. In a head on fight a well rested Connor stomps Haytham which is why Haytham never confronts him face to face while he's still healthy. The dialogue and the writing in this game is great. I dare you to play the game again or just look back and listen to the exchanges between Connor and Haytham and see their differentiating ideologies. That's what makes the dialogue and the good (bad) vs. bad (good) dynamic between the two so interesting. The Assassins and the Templars and their ideologies and beliefs are explored heavily in the game. Both Connor and Haytham and both the Assassins and Templars are flawed; no side is truly "right." I particularly liked when Connor asked Haytham about what do the Templars truly seek. IMO, that's a little glimpse of curiosity and some openness to his dad, and in extension his organization. Connor wanted to know how the Templars view the world and how they hope to achieve peace. on one hand, he did have a desire to know about the other side, but on the other hand, Connor is indeed naive, thinking that freedom (the way the Patriots are fighting achieving) is peace, but Haytham has a point as well. they're only covering their words with honey, but are not better. I really would have liked if Connor and Haytham would have worked together more, even if they're still technically on the opposite sides. just imagine, through them, the Templars and Assassins learning from each other, and quite possibly, collaborate based on their similarities and openness to each other's opinions. unfortunately, both are too flawed in the sense that they're too deep in their beliefs, and those beliefs kind of conflict with each other. I think that if Connor wouldn't have been raised among his people (whom indeed live in complete freedom from civilization), then he would have asked his father more questions about the Templars and share his own beliefs, because he wouldn't stuck that much to the ''freedom is peace''. and Connor's view of freedom is more different than the Patriots' view of freedom. it's not like the latter, who let me remind you, were led by Washington, would have let the Natives live their lives in their own communities, since they, like the Loyalists, thought about the Natives as ''savages''. well, when George ordered the killing of Connor's people, he was still a commander in the British army, because back then, the Colonies still had been part of the British Empire, Lee being under Washington's orders obviously. I could understand why Connor puts this aside for now to save his remaining people, but it's quite interesting to me that afterwards he never even questioned George Washington about this.

For anyone interested, here are some of my favourite passages from the book, more specifically the execution scene (which doesn’t involve Haytham in the game.) And if you read it, you’ll see why I love it so: Connor, with his hands bound in front of him, shot a look of hatred at Thomas and, once again, I marvelled at how much of his mother was to be found in those features. But, along with defiance, and bravery, today there was also… Fear. “You said there’d be a trial,“ he snapped, as Thomas manhandled him. “traitors don’t get trials, I’m afraid. Lee and Haytham sorted that out. It’s straight to the gallows for you.” I went cold. Connor was about to go to his death thinking I had signed his death warrant. “I will not die today,” said Connor, proud. “The same cannot be said for you.” - A paragraph or so later - “Brothers, sisters, fellow patriots,” began Charles, and an impatient hush descended over the crowd. “Several days ago we learnt of a scheme vile, so dastardly that even repeating it now disturbs my being. The man before you plotted to murder our much beloved general.” The crowd gasped “Indeed,“ roared Charles, warming to his theme. “What darkness or madness moved him, none can say. And he himself offers no defence. Shows no remorse. And though we have begged and pleaded for him to share what he knows, he maintains a deadly silence.” At this, the executioner stepped forward and thrust a Hessian sack over Connors head. “If the man will not explain himself - if he will not confess and atone - what other option is there but this? He sought to send us into the arms of the enemy. Thus we are compelled by justice to send him from this world. May God have mercy on his soul.“ And now he was finished, and I looked around, trying to spot more of Achilles’s men. If it was a rescue mission, then now was the time, surely? But where were they? What the hell were they planning? A bowman. They had to be using a bowman. It wasn’t ideal: an arrow wouldn’t sever the rope completely, the best rescuers could hope for was that it would part the fibre enough for Connors weight to snap it. But it was the most accurate. It could be deployed from… Far away. I swung about to check the buildings behind me. Sure enough, at the spot I would’ve chosen was a Bowman, standing at a tall casement window. As I watched, he drew back the bow string and squinted along the line of the arrow. Then, just as the trap door snapped open and Connors body dropped, he fired. The arrow streaked above us, though I was the only one aware of it, and I whipped my gaze over the platform in time to see it slice the rope and weaken it - of course - but not enough to cut it. I risked being seen and discovered, but I did what I did anyway, on impulse, on instinct. I snatched my dagger from within my robes, and I threw it, watched as it sailed through the air and thanked God as it sliced into the Rope and finished the job. As Connor’s writhing and thank God - still very much alive body drops through the trap door, a gasp went up around me. For a moment I felt myself with about an arms width of space all around as the crowd recoiled from me in shock. At the same time I caught sight of Achilles ducking down into the gallows pit where Connors body had fallen. Then I was fighting to escape as the shocked lull was replaced by a vengeful roar, kicks and punches were aimed my way and guards began shouldering their way through the throng towards me. I’m engaged the blade and cut one or two of the sightseers -enough to draw blood and give other attackers pause for thought. More timid now, they at last made space around me. I dashed out of the square and back to my horse, the catcalls of the angry crowd ringing in my ears. - I mean ya’lll if you haven’t read any of these books I highly suggest you do cause they’re just pure art. Haytham’s death is also greatly different in the book; much more heartfelt and not as cold. Sorry if some of the wording is wrong or doesn’t make sense as I typed it all out by hand 🤣

Still my favorite Assassins Creed game and characters. Connor is my favorite character in the whole series and I always had huge admiration and interest for him. This was the last great Assassin game for me too. Four was alright however I had issue with the “Assassin” characters moving forward and stopped playing after Unity. The mystery, characters, story, environments, music, And combat was always a joy in the past. I think nearly everything I love evolved to its best here. However this is just my opinion, many fans never felt the same but I am me and this will always be my favorite adventure within the Creed
