Zane Grey documentary

I used to wonder why my grandfather looked so much like Zane Grey, it turns out, they were distant cousins through his mother’s family. Several characters in his first three novels, the Boggs and McCollochs, were my ancestors. I appreciate this documentary as it fills in some blanks for me for all of Grey’s womanizing. I would give a lot for an opportunity to read the source of those books, Ebenezer Zane’s diary!

Zane Grey has created quite a few iconic characters. My most admired being Brazos Keene. "Twin Sombreros" is one of my favorites by him.

My Grandpa loved reading Zane Grey's books when he finished them my Dad would read them. Both were very big fans. May God bless everyone!

I have always loved westerns and Zane Grey, L'Amour along with others kept me entertained from about 8 or 10 years old. I'm now 77 and love westerns and history and I am sure this will last the rest of my life.

As a child, visiting an aunt and uncle in Lackawaxen(site of Roebling's first American suspension bridge, still standing). I wondered about the Zane Grey connection. Thanks to this documentary, now I know.

Grey's stories were really about character, relationship and deeper things, with the magnificent American west as a setting, which he obviously loved; rather than using the west simply as a canvas for gunplay, cheap drama and human meanness like lesser writers. The best.

My dad loved Zane Grey books. I found 2 first editions by Collier Publishing. My dad’’s last name was coincidentally…Collier. Gave them to him on his 90th birthday.

A distant family relative of the 'Holder' family from Kataia, used to take Zane Grey out fishing, in his launch based from; Whangaroa Harbour, Marlin Hotel & Whangaroa Big Gamefish Club, in 1920s. Grey visited the Marlin Hotel during his 1920s visits and bought fame to the region through his book 'Tales of the Angler's El Dorado, New Zealand' 1926. Kia Ora from New Zealand. 💜💜

Zane Grey wrote an anecdotal story concerning my ancestor who was a Swedish American Fisherman Sea Captain who was apparently an excellent bill fish fisherman. Swordfish were then plentiful in the coastal Atlantic off the Eastern USA in the early to mid 1860s. Zane had heard from another person the story about my ancestor's fishing prowess. It ended up as a short passage in the non-fiction book Zane Grey wrote about fishing.

In 1958(I was 8) I read Zane Grey's "Spirit Of The Border" and was completely Enthralled by Lewis Wetzel, his Wild Adventures, and the whole story.....Years later I learned it was part of "The Ohio River Trilogy" and went in search of the other two volumes 1-Betty Zane & 3-The Last Hunt. After that I was a Zane Grey Fan, Big Time. I've read all of his Westerns much more than once in the ensuing Decades, and every couple of years I treat myself to the Grey "Trilogy" by reading all 3 in succession, and every time, I am once again an 8 year old Georgia Dirt Farm Boy, pining for adventure. Later I discovered Louis L'Amour, and rate he and Grey as #1 & #2, but I can never decide who's #1. I spent a great day eating, talking to people, wandering around and lounging in Medicine Bow Wyoming at "The Virginian"a Restaurant & Hotel where Owen Wister spent time while writing "The Virginian". Another Great Western, but not really up to Grey & L'Amour's Standards, as I see it. I spent many decades wandering all over America's "West", traveled, fished & rambled all over Oregon's Rogue River & The Rogue Valley. Took a Drift Boat down the Rogue, Fishing & getting to Zane Grey's Cabin in what is now "The Wild & Scenic Rogue River area. Some might say that the Georgia Farm Boy didn't live the "Old West Adventures" that he dreamed of as a Boy, because The Bad Guys, Bandits, Road Agents and Sturdy , Determined Honest, Quick Handed Cowboys are all fenced in now & The Old West Is Gone Forever, but as a 73+ version of that Farm Boy I look back on Rodeos, Rank Stock I worked, Gentled & Trained, A Whole Bunch Of Pretty & Charming Gals, Border Town Dives& Honky Tonks(Some I walked out of, Some I was Thrown Out Of, And Some I Just Plain Ran Like Hell To Get Out Of) I never faced the Bad Guy on Main Street At High Noon, when only one of us would be alive after the Shootout was over(Thank God), but in other places at other times, I may have risked my life a time or 3, but Only In America's Service & I got back West as soon as Uncle Sugar relieved me of further Duty & I Stayed Out West for most of my Adult Life. I love the Country, The Mountains, The Wildlife and The People, I Love Most Of All. "Salt Of The Earth" doesn't begin to describe some/Most of the Westerners I've had the pleasure of knowing, while Hunting, Fishing, or just Rambling around their country together, and I'll Never Forget & Will Always Be Grateful. So, Yeah I Had My "Adventures Out West", and then some. Now I'm back on "My Piece"of the Family Farm, and this is where they'll haul me out Feet First, because it's Home. I raised Goats for a while, but now I just have 8 Quarter Horses acting as Pasture Ornaments, and a reminder of Adventures with Rank Ponies, and Wild Rides. I do love this land. It's been in mu family for Many Generations, but I'd be telling A Damned Lie if i say I don't Miss The High Country & Deserts Of Our American West. If you've never been, GO. You'll not regret the trip(I'd avoid all of California except "Northern California". That place is Too Rugged and Almost Painfully Beautiful to miss. I had my Adventure, now, Maybe, It's time for some of you to have yours. Good Luck & Ride Easy

There is a bar/ motel at a place called Tutukaka in Northern New Zealand. There you will see photo's of Mr. Gray behind the bar in New Zealand fishing for Marlin. Him and Mr. Ernest Hemmingway would come to NZ to go after the Marlin. I saw these photo's myself while having a brew after diving the Poor Knights. A dive site about a few miles out. A wonderful place to visit if you get the chance. Great fishing up there, pods of dolphins swim by, and even might see penguins swimming by aswel. The Red Snappers are so good, and cray fish are abundant. ❤

My great grandmother Sophie Anderson told that she sold apples to Zane Grey when he noted on the Rouge River near Applegate, Oregon. (Not far from Grants Pass). 😮😮

After being named Pearl, he coukd only go up from there. lol What an attractuve young man, he didnt have the look if the era. His behavior was remarkably selfish, but he had a remarkably patient wife. Were these female friends or did he have an open marriage? I've enjoyed countless of his stories on film. I'll never again watch one without thinking of this documentary. ✨

Wow, what a let down. I almost wish i hadn’t seen this. After years of admiration for his angling exploits more so than his western novelettes, i find my one time hero wasn’t only a serial philanderer; but also somewhat of a simpleton? Alas the human animal! It doesn’t do to examine anyone’s life under a microscope. At best a disappointment, at worse, an invitation into painful self-reflection.

So Zane was a Dentist? Huh? I can only imagine one more Loathsome profession that wading around in other people's Poor Dental Hygiene, and all the accompanying Yuck & Odors. That profession would be that of a Proctologist, which deals with another Human Orifice, but one located "Much Further South" on the Human Body. I'd rather Steal Sheep to eat, than be either. I respect All Good Dentists, and Good Doctors of any Specialty, but like "The Outlaw Josey Wales" said....."A Man's Got To Know His Limitations" and I know mine. I can Skin & Butcher Critters, I can Pull Baby Calves In A Rain Storm, I can even Stitch & patch up somebody who's been Cut Up In A Tussle, and dress Minor Bullet Wounds, Set & Splint a Broke Leg or Arm(temporarily), treat Fever, Pain and Migraines with Willow Bark, Wild Lettuce, & other Roots & Yarbs but those above mentioned Professions are Far Beyond my Limitations.....Just Sayin
