Canggu development is indeed catered to foreigners with their digital nomad lifestyle... if you want an authentic Bali experience, you can go further west or even east. Even up to central Bali and up north, the vibes are totally different from each other

The Gu attracts a certain kind of people who wants to be part of the digital nomad/surfing/fitness/holistic/instagram lifestyle. Yes, the prices are higher than other parts of Bali but it can be affordable if you eat local food, not have your single origin coffee everyday and partying at beach clubs.

Bali is a tourist trap, the last thing i'd want to see is lots of western tourists i'd never go there.

And no one in Bali will stop you to continue exploring it's 17,507 other sibling islands. People make canggu as their base, nothing wrong with that, you'll find some of them going to Mentawais for surf trip, to Lombok for hike, to Raja ampat or triton bay for diving, some not. So yeah, there's tons of empty places you can reach from Bali, btw not many places in this region you could find surfing waves as good and consistent as those in Bali tho, except few other places in other less developed Indo islands, so that's one reason for you.
