Hollow Ichigos intention from the very start was to protect Ichigo, in fact he has no problem allowing Ichigo to lead, he only gets upset whenever Ichigo is on the brink of death or is too weak to fight that he has to slap some sense into him by threatening him because he doesnt want Ichigo to die even if it means taking over and handling the fighting himself. Old man and hollow ichigo work together to keep ichigo alive, mayhaps in different ways but both to protect him.

When I first saw that episode on Adult Swim I had a feeling he wasn't lying about that, despite how Ichigo viewed him as a hollow if we think back on all their conversations, "Hichigo" always seemed disappointed in how Ichigo acted and scolded him like some condescending teacher. Also zanpactou don't seem to lie to their wielders since they're the ones who hold the power to aid in battle. Don't get me wrong I find this half of Zangetsu insane especially with how battle crazed and violent he was, but I have to give him props for pretending to be the very thing Ichigo hated even if it meant not being accepted. He pushed Ichigo in ways that helped and he was always upfront with him in every situation, not one to hold punches as he did care in his own way to protect Ichigo. If he actually was evil he could've taken over at any given moment but he didn't until he knew Ichigo was too weak to face against stronger opponents or if he was in a near death state where his instincts were only to survive which is probably why he attacked Uryu in Vasto Lorde form

2:40 Spoilers for the manga, so don't read on if you've not read it. . I love how even in this filler arc, there is foreshadowing regarding the true identity of Hollow Ichigo. Juha Bach (or Ywach, I honestly don't know what his name is lmao), Ichigo's Quincy side, is the one suppressing him but the viewer wouldn't have any idea that this is the case until you start the TYBW arc. The fact that it was teased throughout the entire series is amazing.

There is something absolutely beautiful about the fact once you know the truth all of Zangetsu's actions makes sense not only as an act of self-preservation but because it was actively granting Ichigo's wishes. Trying to show him not only his true nature but the true depths of his own power. This is most prominent during Ichigo's battle with Byakuya where because of Ichigo's inexperience he was destroying his own body it took over to finish the fight and in the battle with Ulquiorra where it granted Ichigo's wish to answer Orihime's call to be saved.

this ENTIRE TIME i thought white ichigo was trying to take over his body and become the new ichigo but now that i see it back again he was really trying to protect him. think about it everytime ichigo was close to death or being absolutely slammed he would appear and white would try so hard to stop ichigo bleach is so good at showing minute details and letting the audience understand the meaning behind everything and people call it boring or lame and don’t know anything about the anime makes me sad but now everyone is on the bleach bandwagon now after 10 years just a bunch of false fans because the same ones who was hating are now the same ones watchin the newest season

I always thought of Hollow Ichigo as Ichigo’s suppressed trauma, violent tendencies, anger, chaos. That’s why he looks like Ichigo but his characteristics are those of a hollow yet his personality is that of Ichigo.
