When I first played this mission, even though I was still just a kid not even in his teens, I knew things were bad. All senior pilots killed, and one falling on top of other junior pilots fighters, and I knew we were the only ones left - 4 barely fresh out of training rookies against a huge number of enemies and this base, our home, was the front line!

being that it's main and possibly the last line of defense before reaching Osea's mainland, there was no doubt that the Yukes wanted to cripple the base to insure a much easier invasion. but man from Tornado attack fighters to B-1B Lancers, they really were going all out into leveling the base.

Worse is a couple of missions later, when they fill out your squadron with academy cadets. A week into the war, and you're the most veteran, experienced pilots in the entire Osean Air Force.

But tragedy once again struck at Sand Island. The Scinfaxi wiped out all the new pilots. Once again, it was just the four at the island...

@@lgmmrm - Pre-War commander. Chopper states that the 108th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Sand Island Detachment was an Auxiliary Squadron. So Ford was likely commanding the rest of the Main Body of the 108th TFS or its parent Air Wing somewhere else. Likely McNearly or another nearby field, one that may have been hit early on as well. So Ford was flying down to assume command after the squadron lost Bartlett. He likely hadn't seen combat since the Belkan War himself. As such, he was likely a crotchety person who was more than a little annoyed. Given that a war had just happened and caught them by complete surprise. Anyone would be in a foul mood with that happening. As such, he died in a foul mood where he could have been a rather pleasant fella.
