Love this series as well as the 26 film trilogy Shintaro Katsu's Zatoichi(1962-1989) will always be the best. Cant beat the original Anyway, This was a Great episode. The disabled sister is so sweet and adorable, i really wished Ichi stayed with her after Ichi put down his sensei due to the senseis greed for money and power. I wonder now whos gonna protect her

It always bugs me when I hear a part of the soundtrack that is familiar but not quite one I recognize. In this series, whenever there's a romantic scene between a man and woman, the same song starts (eg, here at 14:10, when his sensei's sister sits down to talk with Ichi). I finally remembered the song it reminds me of. It's not identical, but similar to "Superstar", a hit song for the Carpenters in 1971, with lyrics that start.... Long ago, and, oh, so far away I fell in love with you before the second show....

This reminds me of "New Tale of Zatoichi", although the ending has changed as well as other details like he didn't call out his master by name and the son of the wealthy man was murdered. I wonder why they recreate this condensed version for television?

The one he has in this episode is the one the old man gave him in the previous episode. When he gave it to him, he himself said that it was just as good as the one he had. She just needed to be sharpened and that could have been done at any blacksmith shop on her way. If you look closely, the wood of the handle and scabbard are a darker color than the one he had before, so it is not the same sword that he lost, but a new one that he made with the blade that the old man gave him in the previous episode.

Ichi's Life is so full of Tragedy. He Kowtows to the Samari, to the Japanese to lose Face is the worst possible of all Loss! He sadly could have had a Loving Wife! His Teacher who walked the stright path, was a Hypocrite in the end, He gives up his life! His Sister loses everything, at the cost of Pride, because of her brother! Zatoichi remains a man of Honor! He may not have Sight, but He sure as Hell has what they do not have! Here You have a true Hero! It is Idiotic that Hollywood hasn't understood that this what the World needs. Not Superhuman Strength, or Powers, but a Human Being; who gives his all, and remains a Humble Man!

I don't get it. The boss arranged for the meeting to release the son, for the $ for teacher, extorted from the father, then the boss killed the son and father. Teacher known to be superior swordsman, then kills boss... The boss must have known teacher would not like that and attack boss for killing son and father,... and must have known teacher would attack boss for that... And just to save 15o ryo. Stupid plan. Couldn't be that dumb. Then Ichi has to kill teacher becuz he was going to use blood money, but it was boss's doing that made money bloody. Also teacher having killed boss, could have access to boss's money, since he is dead. What am I missing? Teacher couldn't think of using dead boss money? He couldn't be that dumb. I don't get it

No - the money belonged to the family of the merchant & son killed by the boss. The money needed to go back to them - they had to borrow from many people to pay that ransom. You are right about the stupid plan, I guess the boss was betting that the teacher would just go along with everything to get the money and then the boss would have this secret over him. The teacher would have to either go along or commit seppuku. He thought teacher was too samurai to kill him AND keep the money. The big plot hole was the sister. I guess she's just screwed and will end-up working at a brothel.

What happened is that the boss believed that he was not a completely honorable swordsman for having gone to ask a yakuza boss for money, so he assumed to me that he would be willing to do anything for that money in his desperation to become a samurai Furthermore, the master was not a samurai, but a ronin, and as far as I know, these used to work for organized crime or were hired by them. Another reason the boss must have believed that the teacher wouldn't care where the money he needed came from. On the teacher's side, he just trusted the boss too much, blinded by his desperation to get that money and finally fulfill his dream of being a samurai like his father. It wasn't until he saw what the boss did to realize the disgrace and mistake he had made by asking a criminal for money. That's why he kills him. Regarding Ichi, he didn't kill his teacher because of what you say. Ichi killed him because he attacked him and thought that he was just a bandit that he ran into on his way. Ichi does not realize that he was his teacher until after killing him, when he relates the wound on his hand, which is the same as the wound his teacher gave him in training.
