I can understand that answer actually. I don't think he was "leading them on" or something. People can think they are in love. Or BE in love. He displays self awareness and a lot of growth. He says that after his daughter he realised he has a lot of love in him that he didn't know he had before. They just go on to discuss what love and being 'in love' means and that's what he responds to that he doesn't understand what being in love exactly is, so maybe he hasn't been in love yet.
