34 years pharmacist here.. Maurice, it's a blessing. Greater things, especially peace in your soul, is definitely in your future. Retail pharmacy ruined my health and I regret taking the only employment options had. There was never any appreciation, especially for the extra hours we work. I worked 55hrs per week and no OT pay. Anyway, God with you. Btw, I still love the science of medicine and study 3 hours per day the newest developments. P.S. You mentioned not getting a bathroom break.. That's why I'm convinced I have CKD Stage 3 because I never drank water during a 13 hour day for 34 years. My anxiety and blood pressure was sky high. I would move so fast I'd sweat!! Wearing a shirt and tie and smock...I looked like I was always sick. .... The words "metrics" triggers me to so much anger because I saw my patients as my grandparents because they were someone's grandparents. I prayed with them, cried with them, hugged them, and would even walk them to their car. I got to the point where I just didn't care about corporate.

Much respect for you and I hope you are doing better now, health wise, no one deserves what you've said you went through. I think I wound up with two UTI's because I wasn't going to the bathroom enough...and since I couldn't go enough I wasn't drinking enough. I'm already a bit prone to them...but not 2 in a year.

I wonder if his manager was personally jealous of him for having an interesting life outside of work plus being on track for a corporate position? Or covertly racist? I think he should apply for the corporate gig in Chicago anyway; considering the protests in past nearly ten days, the corporate office may be motivated to hire him by ignoring the bad and unjust decision of the manager with one of those "Karen's" who complained about "too many" black technicians.

Pharm D. here. When I worked retail we would work 12 hour shifts, exact numbers like Maurice here. We were so busy I couldn’t even leave to even change my tampon. Well it leaked bad. I was so mad/frustrated/defeated. Was accused of adding something to someone’s medicine once. They asked to see what ingredients were in it, but we changed manufacture and I told them so. Next thing I know I get a gasp, bug-eyes and an exclamation “what do you mean, you don’t make your drugs back there?!”!!!!!!! Another time a guy in a wife-beater comes and asked me what he could use to get a cockroach out of his ears...I asked him straight-faced how he knew he had a dead cock-roach in his ears and he said he felt it moving in there the previous day and killed it. I didn’t ask any more questions and suggested an otc ear wash.... A teen came up to the pharmacy one night and asked to borrow a pill of OxyContin.... I have so many stories lol

30+ years ago my husband was pre-vet-med in undergrad and picking up some hands on experience at a mixed animal practice in our college town.... back when large animal vets were allowed to do in-house compounding. Mixing up concentrate for water medication of some kind the vet-owner of the practice explained to my husband (then fiancé) that “you have to make sure you get the right shade of yucky red” (or maybe green?) “because otherwise the clients won’t believe it’s the same thing that they got last time” He found that odd at the time, then about ten years later, he’s the vet explaining to staff that no, you can’t substitute lime jello for cherry jello in the water medication (the sugar makes it more palatable to the pigs) because some farm hand will think the farmer got the wrong stuff. I always appreciated that little sticker on my Rx that said “this is the same medication you have received in the past but the shape or color may have changed.

Uh, we ain't nurses or police officers. She actually argued with me that we DO have badge numbers. Stated the pharmacist had one on his name tag. I had to calmly explain to her that I knew for certain he did NOT have a badge number on his name tag because I was, in fact, the one who made his tag -- only one of so, so many stories.

I loved this video! I watched the whole thing and what a wonderful person Maurice is. His humor and kindness really shine through. I work as an RN and can relate to so much of what was discussed. I am so happy to support his channel and other platforms. We need more humor in the healthcare setting. It makes such a difference to patients and fellow coworkers as the environment can already be so stressful. I can remember laughing so hard with my coworkers on the night shift and it really does get you through certain situations. I really, really liked his point about how it would be a great idea for health professionals to also have other areas to generate their income so you don't have to be so afraid if you lose your job. This really resonated with me and although I have been a mother/baby nurse in the hospital, I also love this area of photography and would love to start my own business. I could take their photos and then give them breastfeeding education or help answer other questions or provide support. I agree, that I think this guy has so much to offer the world with his kindness, knowledge and humor and maybe his success and fulfillment can now be accelerated due to not being tied down to Walgreens anymore. 💕

We have this same problem in tech. We write your software, we build & manage your networks (including the internet), and we suffer this moral injury / burnout thing constantly. That should scare you. I did healthcare IT for 7 or so out my 25-year IT career, keeping clinics’ network running, testing new medical equipment, doing large-scale Epic (EMR) buildouts... I’ve don’t almost everything. These days I have a total breakdown every 6 months or so now, and I have to take off and head to the coast for a week each time. It’s really bad, and we’re all feeling it as these jobs go from excruciating to impossible. I honestly don’t know how technology can even survive as there’s too few of us who have these niche skills, and we’re all burning out at a crazy pace. Tech is simply too complicated. If something else doesn’t get us first, tech entropy will screw us all over. Things can only get so complicated before they break down entirely. A Gordian knot of hell. Anyway I have a special understanding of what’s being discussed here.

I did a day at a local clinic for low income adults. They treated HTN, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Staffed by NPs and PharmDs with a physician medical director. The MD saw the very complex patients as referred from the NPs & PharmDs. It was an excellent collaboration!

Brilliant man. I'm only 1/3 of the way thru this video so y'all may touch on this in the rest of the video but he should not go back to Walgreens but start his own pharmacy system based in his research and experience to change the system. He knows his stuff. He is making a big difference in healthcare and will continue to make a huge difference in Healthcare.

The store I worked at was one of the largest grossing Rite Aids in the northwest region. Walgreen's came in and we went to the bottom in less than one year. after I quit they lost over half of their scrip's because they followed me.

We had gone to the same pharmacy in a retail chain for over 20 years. The retailer went belly up a couple years ago, and all local scripts were transferred to the newly rebuilt grocery store. Unfortunately, the grocery chain has not anticipated the neighboring retailer closing, and so the pharmacy space in the new store looks to my eye to be about half the space in the old building ... now with maybe twice the customer count. The disorganization and wait times due to transition were extremely frustrating for my adult daughter who works 50 hour weeks herself and has three small children, one with two asthma inhalers and two nebulizer meds being told she’ll need to come back later after already having waited 30-60 minutes after first checking in 😣 It’s getting better, and my daughter has stuck it out because one of the amazing PharmDs from our old pharmacy is now at the grocery store. And she is worth the wait!

@@tanya5322, I live in a smallish town, around 15K people, we got more than half of the scripts from Kmart when they closed a couple of years ago, and then we got all of the scripts and inventory (which was a disaster) from an independent that was in a grocery store that closed. We were authorized for OT for 2 months last year and 2 months this year. It was INSANE! We were behind for weeks!

@ZDoggMD Until now, I knew absolutely nothing of what pharmacists actually did back there behind the glass. Thanks for this eye-opening interview. Hope good things happen for this guy. He talks about the shortage of experienced techs. But I don't see the push from that community to start a career as a pharmacy tech or pharmacist. But this is a good start. I have no idea why this video popped up in my recommended list. Outstanding interview! I think I'll subscribe!

He’s hilarious! No worries, Sir! I was just refused by Walgreens to refill my prescriptions because they won’t accept my new insurance--after 30 years of being a loyal customer. Transfer with me to CVS. Not only do they take my insurance, but their food selection is much better than Walgreens!

@Maurice as a pharmacy tech I think I speak for most of us techs when I say we love and support you!! Keep bringing to light everything the pharmacy staff go through!! I can tell you would be a great Pharmacist to work with!! Unfortunately after 10yrs pharmacy took its toll on me and I got out of the field for now. It's not worth the stress, belittling, conditions, corporate greed, and lack of pay for technicians. I took a job outside of healthcare that pays less in social services and have zero regrets! My health, mentally, emotionally, and physically are no longer suffering. Keep up the good fight!

Unfortunately, corporate Walgreens only cares when their @$$#$ are being kissed and they are getting the full benefits from your hard labor without them giving back much. They don't take into account the times that you stayed late helping patients, skipping lunch, taking medications to their homes on your time, or even paying for their medications many times. Dr. Shaw seems like a great professional and human being. Walgreens doesn't deserve him. Good luck to him moving forward. BTW, at Walgreens corporate is ALWAYS involved in all decisions. The "It is the DM decision" statement is BS.

He's too good for Walgreens. Nearly all of the Walgreens stores in Florida are so understaffed, that it causes constant mistakes, and also it causes their employees to be so stressed that they are extremely difficult to deal with, they don't even have time to think straight, it's like they are in a constant state of panic. Plus, being that the pay is so very low, along with the fact that they are too greedy to hire enough staff, there's many employees who are unqualified to say the least, I'm not just talking about people who aren't educated, but people who should not be working with the public, ever - and especially not in a pharmacy - when fast food employees make more per hour than pharmacy techs, and the fact that most people would never put themselves in such a compromising situation by taking a job at Walgreens which could cause them to lose their certification or license due to unsafe staffing which leads to mistakes that would be the employee's responsibility, they hire a lot of people who are unfit to work any job, much less in a pharmacy. EVERY single time I fill a prescription, there's a major problem, and it's never a simple, normal type of problem - and I'm referring to multiple stores & multiple employees, not just one. Some of the things that have happened with the pharmacy techs are unbelievable, it's outright preposterous. I spoke with a pharmacist last week that was in such a state of anxiety & panic, due to being extremely busy and dealing with a pharmacy tech that was angry & uneducated, and trying to solve a ridiculous issue with my prescription, that he literally had to put me on hold so that he could gather his composure - he was in great distress, I've seen patients who've come to the ER for anxiety & panic attacks that were much less anxious than he was - it's so sad that these employees think they have to put up with that type of environment! They are afraid to speak up, and don't realize that if they spoke up as a group that Walgreens would have no choice.

I have 30 plus years as a Registered Nurse. Walgreens probably had another pharmacist who was willing to work for less. I once was fired from a hospital middle management position bc I spent too much time out of the nurses' station and wrote too much in the nurses' notes. It was a salaried position ( so no over time), yet at most I may have been thirty minutes past my " shift". The ADON told me " you spend too much time talking to the patients ". It was a psychiatric hospital. The director of nursing service s hired his friend to take my place. His friend's unit had closed so it provided her a job ( making less money).

My compassion n how i try to help my patients when I hear not only when ppl tell me, but ppl telling me and crying bout how much it means to them when i go the xtra for them or a fam member. Or even explaining bout PAs so they understand what's goin on n how they can also follow up w the Dr or ins. Even tho it's crap pay n I have so much anxiety, I feel good when I can do good n help people
