Like a strange fruit, that's out of season Oho-oho-ohhh You are bound to die alone You will swing free on the breeze then Oho-oho-ohhh You are bound to die alone (You are bound to die alone) At the end of the day, you went for lights out Oho-oho-ohhh You are bound to die alone Oho-oho-ohhh At the end of it all there is no doubt Oho-oho-ohhh That you are bound to die alone (We are bound to die alone) Don't darling die on me now (Don't darling die on me now) We'll dig a grave close to your home (We'll dig a grave close to your home) Don't you fix your eyes on me now (Don't you fix your eyes on me now) We never said you'd come back home (We never said you'd come back home) They're coming closer to kill us Don't cry, don't cry on me now No they ain't ever goin' to help us Close to his grave, we'll build our home They're coming closer just to kill us Don't you fix your eyes on me now You know they never goin' help us We never said you'd come back home End of the way when the thieves tell Oho-oho-ohhh You are bound to die alone Oho-oho-ohhh At the end of it all when the fields burn Oho-oho-ohhh You are bound to die alone (We are bound to die alone) Oho-oho-ohhh Don't darling die on me now We'll dig a grave close to your home Don't you fix your eyes Don't you fix your eyes on me now We never said you'd come back home (We never said you'd come back home) Don't darling die on me now (Don't darling die on me now) We'll dig a grave close to your home (We'll dig a grave close to your home) Don't you fix your eyes on me now (Don't you fix your eyes on me now) We never said you'd come back home (We never said you'd come back home)

Built on Ashes has been one of my favorite songs for the past year. I found Zeal & Ardor while having a streaming metal station playing. It was one of their more soulful songs and not so much black metal infused. It really wasn’t what I was looking for but the singer had a good voice. I listened to more songs with soul and black metal mixed and liked it. I like a lot of the old black metal but a lot of the newer stuff past the mid 90’s is mixed with another genre anyway (inspired by classical, electronic, rock, even bluegrass) so it didn’t take long to appreciate this as well.

This music is in communion with my soul and in this hour I sit alone with my thoughts I ponder, the blades of my past get closer to the vines. Sorrow is pushed only by the winds of misery. But a moment's notice, I see my reflection in these waters we travel. I move. I move in this colorful abyss. I move to this promised land I've felt inside the deepest chapters I've lived. The hollowness I feel is room for the things I wish to bring. So a giants step is a stars dance on this road of many crossroads.

When you've got real ears and explore, without limit and preconception, when you play with codes without ever being ridiculous, to finally built an inspired, smart, honnest music, mixing so skilfully different styles that rarely (never?) met before. A real openminded work of composing, where beautiful choices, arrangements, a constant attention to the harmonic and groovy aspect reveal such an original identity. Their approach a little reminds me that of Primus, Skindred too, there is obviously others, and more recently Polyphia, who has their way, released out a 3rd album too of an astonishing maturity et opening. Last album's really amazing Fu****g beautiful discover for me tonight. It's only depressing if you hold onto the idea of life. To me, the lyrics "you were bound to die alone" is comforting. It says to me that its ok, no matter what I do, good or bad, I came into this world alone, and I will leave it alone. That is a fact that cannot be avoided or denied, and for me, that fact is liberating. It is all as it should be.

I believe this is a song about racism. It's a modernized and edgier version of Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit", a protest song written to denounce the hangings of black people in the South of the USA in the early to mid 20th century. The first lines of the song are basically identical. "Bound to die alone" is, like, literally bound, as in tied to a rope. Not just bound metaphorically. Seems to be sang from the perspective of two fleeing slaves who have already accepted that the white man will hunt them down. I believe that's what the marching sounds in the background are supposed to represent. The lyrics are an attempt of one of them at comforting their friend before their inevitable fate, but without lying.
