“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much-the wheel, New York, wars and so on-whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man-for precisely the same reasons.”

It's pretty unsettling how much this song is an anthem for the end of a generation of people. Considering everything is linked to the 50's through the 80's, during the birth of the "Time is money" mindset, the cold war, the music video being set in a 50's period, plastic surgery becoming a thing during their generation...it kinda all works.

The song's music was originally written by guitarist Billy Howerdel, and intended for his solo project, Ashes Divide. However, he often presents music intended for Ashes Divide to band frontman Maynard James Keenan to see if he has interest in writing lyrics and vocal harmonies for songs to become A Perfect Circle material instead; Keenan chose to use the song because he felt that "People are going to hate me for this one, so let’s do that."

Love the Hitchhikers reference, the feeling of this being a continuation of Ænema (my favorite Tool song), Maynard's dry sarcastic tone, those perfect sexy harmonies, everything about this song and the whole album. This song has aged hauntingly as I lost my friend Leia to suicide. The line about Willy Wonka, Major Tom, Ali and Leia has a new, more personal meaning.

Seems like a lot of people always cloud their own personal opinions about a band's new album by letting nostalgia get in the way. There's way too many people criticizing stuff through comparison instead of looking at something as its own thing. Personally, when a band I like that I consider to have a lot of talent comes out with a new album, I'm hoping its going to sound different from their previous stuff. I don't want talent to be wasted on the same sound over and over, I wanna know what else they can do.

Zylph sure, but some of this album could have been edited or tweaked a little more to give it extra punch. There are some slower moments when you could be forgiven for thinking the tape has broken mid song. Maynard's vocals dominate the album, whereas guitars and drums generally take a back seat. The style of Puscifer can't be denied, and it is about on a par with Conditions for my Parole. The final track, Get the Lead Out, is a sleeper, especially with Keenan's knack for arching vocal melodies in that grey echo style of his.
@MrJackstar123
@MrJackstar123 6 жыл бұрын
I mean... get the lead out is my favorite track of this album. Sometimes in music, you get to a point where you can't really objectively say if something is good or bad. If you get into it and really start feeling the flow of a song, then for you its perfect, nothing needs to be changed. If you cant get into that vibe, then the song isint for you and that's ok. It's just a question of personal taste.

Atratius I don't think people have a problem with the message and the allusion to The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. It's not a opinion based on intellect. xD Little pretentious on your part. J F.G. I'm suggesting they have a problem with the tone of the song (it being happy or like a pop song) because they don't get the irony that's reflected from the book. If they appreciated or even acknowledged the book, they'd realize this is the most APC way to cover the material. It's like saying Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland isn't "my Tim Burton" because the film is using too many bright colours.

People talking about this like it's too pop or airy or whatever. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be. They're taking this really sad, bleak message of hopelessness and wrapping it in a friendly pop package so that people will listen to it thinking it's a happy song when it's anything but. When Douglas Adams wrote 'So Long and Thanks For the Fish' he was struggling with depression. It's why the Hitchhiker's series (at least the majority of it that he wrote) while having hopeful elements was mostly downbeat when you really look at it. He hadn't much hope for humanity due to war and how much of the environment we were killing off. Maybe this will help some people think. Mostly I think it's meant to say, "we only have ourselves to blame for the shitty shape we're in". As much as I love Douglas Adams work I just wish songs like this didn't have so many reasons to exist.

The Stormborn This song isn't really Pucifer. Maybe some of the other songs are heavily pucifer influenced... Even a couple songs seemed more Nine Inch Nails influenced, but art is about embracing creativity. Maybe if we embrace the new APC we will get hear a brand new Tapeworm album with Maynard James Kennan and Trent Reznor. How fucking epic would that be!?

It took me a while to comprehend this song, when I did whoa, it all made sense. The entire song, melody, harmony, lyrics are an allegory to how society mask the nuclear warfare dangers and tensions with joyous capitalistic consumerism. I, didn't understand the first time I listened to, so it sure sounded weird, the 2nd time I captured better the melody and got interested in interpreting the lyrics, then I saw the blatant nuclear bombing references through the entire text, then I perceived that this song is beyond perfect.

I KNEW it!! Maynard identifies as a dolphin! Clever. Learn to Swim. Praying for rain. Blue is such a lovely color huh? Never quite learned how to swim my tail fin. I knew something fishy... I mean mammal-ly was going on. Finally coming out. The pieces fit. I applaud Maynard. There's no way anyone can have such an amazing voice without a blowhole as well. He always said he identified as an eggplant... that was just to throw us off. "What'll take to get through to you precious? You're such a fish! Why you wanna throw it away like this? (the ocean is) such a mess, I don't wanna watch you" Stone & Echo (the Dolphin)? So we "dive" like crows into anything glimmering (like the ocean?) His whole body of work was pointing to this all along. "I'm treading water, I need to sleep awhile". How could I have been SO blind. Don't flipper out guys. Accept him as he is... as a Dolphin. Maynard James literally translates to "Holy Diver" in an ancient language. Google it.

There is nothing wrong with change, but a band can't completely genre jump and expect people to stay on board. Especially when they sacrifice their unique sound for another generic radio-band sound. I've never understood the argument that "people just don't like change" when it comes to music. You're damn right I don't like change. I like metal (and the infinite sub-genres in it) so I listened to Linkin Park because they made that music I was into, then all of a sudden they stop making music that I'm into so I need to go fuck off (Chester's words)? That makes no sense. I don't listen to bands in hopes that they completely change their sound, I listen to bands because I enjoy what I currently hear.

This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I lost my brother last August and I can't help but to hear his name in the song along with all the celebrities we've lost. He loved Tool and APC so much, it saddens me that he'll never get to hear this great song and amazing album :(

This has been stuck in my head for days. The lyrics are so sarcastic. "Hip hip hooray. For this fireworks display. Mind and body blown away. What a radiant crescendo." If you are listening to it in 2021 you have an IQ above 80.

Time is money and money's time We wasted every second dime On diets, lawyers, shrinks and apps, and flags and plastic surgery Now Willy Wonka, Major Tom Ali and Leia have moved on Signal the final curtain call in all its atomic pageantry Bravissimo, hip hip hurray For this fireworks display Mind and body blown away What a radiant crescendo Ticker tape parade Our hair and skin like Marilyn Monroe In an afterwind Time is money, money's time We wasted every second dime On politicians, fancy water, and guns, and plastic surgery Like our Prince and Reenie's mom All the dolphins have moved on Signaling the final curtain call in all its atomic pageantry Bravissimo, hip hip hurray What a glorious display Melt our joyous hearts away Under the mushroom cloud confetti Hip hip hurray For this fireworks display Mind and body blown away What a radiant crescendo Hip hip hurray Hip hip hurray Ticker tape parade Our hair and skin like Marilyn Monroe In an afterwind Time is money, money's time We wasted every second dime On diets, lawyers, shrinks, and apps, and flags, and plastic surgery Now Willy Wonka, Major Tom Ali and Leia have moved on Signal the final curtain call in all its atomic pageantry

For the last time: musicians don't *owe* their fans anything. Artists don't create art for audiences, they create it for themselves. If you like it, you can buy it. If you want to see them perform, you can pay for the privilege. If you don't like their art, save your money. No one is forcing you to patronize them.

AEnima is when you first find out the world is ending and you are still pissed at everyone for making it happen. This song is what happens when you accept that reality, become OK with your fate, and realize that all those people you were pissed at are about to die horribly... ... and it becomes fucking hilarious.
