Something similar happened in the NHL in like 2018. It was a pretty big story if you followed hockey back then. The Chicago Blackhawks through a series of unfortunate events somehow lost all of their goaltenders, so they signed a guy from the local amateur league on a one-day emergency contract. This guy went on to make some crucial saves and the Blackhawks ended up winning that game. He became a hero for them for a while.
That was Scott Foster for the Hawks. The most famous NHL EBUG was in 2020 just before the shutdown. The emergency backup could appear for either team if they lose both their goalies. All NHL games have a designated emergency backup goalie. Carolina were playing in Toronto and both their goalies James Reimer (former Maple Leaf) and Petr Mrázek (future Maple Leaf) were injured in the first 30 minutes. The emergency backup was David Ayres, a Toronto Maple Leaf employee who was involved in ice maintenance at their practice facility. Ayres sometimes stood in as a goalie at Maple Leaf practices and was known to the whole Maple Leaf Roster (Reimer was the only Carolina player who knew Ayres). The way the remainder of the game went, Ayres was the winning goalie of record as Carolina won and he was on the ice when the winning goal was scored. There is a rather (in)famous vlog from Steve Dangle where he rants about the game.

I support Macclesfield FC in the 7th tier of English football. I'm not sure what other teams in the league do, but the league only allows 5 players on a bench and we don't select a backup Goalkeeper. I can think of at least two occasions where our goalkeeper has gone off injuried or has been sent off, or in one case, both. On that occasion Macclesfield were leading 2-0, and an outfield player went in goal, 8 players got behind the goal and we brought on a 6ft6 forward to try to hoof the ball up to and take into the corner at every opportunity. The goalkeeper s**t housed our way to victory, holding on to the 2-0 lead by trying to chest down or control everything with his feet, and would wait until the opposition player would jog up to him before picking up the ball (or diving on it). Every time the ball went down the wing, the defenders would blast the ball out of the ground, no ball boys at this level, so the balls came from either the bench or the tunnel, not sure which, but basically took longer to get the ball back in play.

Hell, if we re talking about people going in goal due to lack of subs it literally just happened to Parma vs Napoli where at 1-0 up in the 75th minute the Parma goalkeeper charges out of goal, clears the ball but hits the attacker on the followup, the ref gives a second yellow for it. In comes defender and nominal captain (he himself started on the bench btw) Enrico Del Prato. He obviously struggled, got a yellow for dissent on a play where he was actually right as iirc an initial penalty for Napoli got overturned by VAR (not caused by the now GK) and with 11 added minutes, Napoli found a way to come back via goals from Romelu Lukaku (90+2, he came on too) and Zambo Anguissa (90+6). @nickjeffery536Ай бұрын
@@williamcross210 Yes indeed... that too. In fact, in 1986, West Ham's Alvin Martin scored a hattrick vs Newcastle, where each of his three goals came against a different goalkeeper. Martin Thomas started in goal, coming back early from a shoulder injury, due to his backup keeper being injured in a previous game, then landed awkwardly on the shoulder. He made it to half-time, where Alvin Martin had scored one of West Ham's four goals. Chris Hedworth (a midfielder) took over at the start of the second half, but cracked his collarbone, and after conceding the sixth goal of the game (Martin's second) went back into outfield, at which time Peter Beardsley took the keeper's gloves - and Martin took and scored a late penalty to finally make the game 8-1.

@edi0157Ай бұрын
Wow that is crazy, not stopping for international breaks is ridiculous. Usually the way it happens is a lack of subs like it happened to Parma vs Napoli this season (the GK even got the ball on that one, it was a second yellow for the follow through that did him in). Hell, when I am playing FIFA or FM I might not bother with a bench GK in general (mostly in FIFA where it was still 7 bench spots up to now, FM has enough in most competitions to get a GK in too) as having the extra spot to bed in a youngster or something is worth the minuscule chance (0 in the last few FIFAs afaik but it could happen back in like FIFA 17) that the GK gets sent off/gets injured during the game. I d still have more than one GK in the squad in case of training injuries and all though of course. Even more, my favourite IRL team (FCSB of Romania) pretty much has been standing in one GK (Stefan Tarnovanu) for the past 2-3 seasons as the previous no 1 (Andrei Vlad) is still there but made too many mistakes to be trusted again yet is still the nominal no 2 and the 3rd choice guy is some 23 year old dude that played 1 cup match for us years ago so yeah, imagine if we played in the MLS. And yeah, this is what Chelsea is preparing for lmaoo

Go read Jeremiah Oshan's article on Sounder at Heart on how Columbus got themselves into this mess, because they are /far/ from being innocent here. Maybe they shouldn't have forgotten to use the extra callups that the MLSPA granted for the Olympics (which led to one member of the front office getting fired). Maybe they shouldn't have had one of their keepers' final callup be _for a friendly_. Plenty of chances to not find themselves in this mess, and yet they still did.

They were willing to take 50k in their hand to get a new one, the minimum contract is 70k for a full season (so probably less for their reserve player - who will already earn a bit, so it's not even the full 70k extra).

Yeah man no sympathy for the crew here. These are not MLS salary cap rules, that get so much heat for being confusing, these were player union rules, which is a legally binding contract. If you need a kid for more than 4 games, you need to pay the dude a senior union wage, plain and simple. Anyone who been in a union with seniority has probably run into something not dissimilar. The crew made multiple mistakes, including using a loan on a friendly against Aston Villa, to get to the point of not having any loans left. Apparently they knew they screwed this up and actually fired the dude In charge of the loans earlier this season. They had two options from there, go give the kid a senior union contract and just pay him the money he’s due per the legally binding CBA. For reference, senior minimum is like 80k and the season is nearly over so like 20k this year. Or they could have found literally any free agent keeper, or someone willing to come out retirement for a weekend, in the states who they hadn’t run out of loans on and give him a short term emergency contract. Probably less than 10k. They chose instead to make a point, and publicly make a it-union statements and spin this as “weird mls rules” rather than bog standard union rules.
