In other sports it's not too uncommon. The Austrian hockey league has teams from Slovenia, Hungary and Italy, for example. Obviously, traveling distances are a lot shorter in that instance and Italy really has the closest (geographically) league for Fenerbahce to join where it still makes sense. The problem is: Italy is so far up in terms of the UEFA coefficient that adding Fenerbahce wouldn't increase their number of teams for Europe. So if they take one of the spots, it would actively hurt Italian clubs. Therefore, they'd either never get international football or they need some weird special clause. Or indeed they would find a smaller league where they would contribute to coefficient points and eventually "earn" their spot. But clubs in smaller leagues don't have the money to travel that far for away games. Closer leagues (Bulgaria, Romania) in contrast are too weak to accommodate them. TL;DR: Either way sucks.

I think a more likely outcome would be them joining the Saudi Pro League - they'll want to continue promoting themselves & luring one of the biggest clubs in a predominantly Muslim country might appeal to them. They may even offer enough money to offset them not being in the Champions League, although expect them to argue that they should still be allowed entry because they are based in Europe. I don't think this will happen, but I wouldn't be shocked.

Fenerbahce did not clear any wrong doing. Turkish court decided that the evidence, which caused Fenerbahce to be banned from Europe by UEFA, was not captured in legal ways. Therefore the case was dropped. Even in the summary statement by the Turkish court says there was match fixing and it was confessed by the players, coaches and the team managements. They were punished by UEFA because Fenerbahce did match fixing and UEFA did not care about how those evidence collected. But they weren’t punished in Turkey because of technicality.

There are plenty of instances of teams joining leagues from neighbouring countries, even if their home country also has a league. Think the 5 Welsh teams in England, TNS and Berwick Rangers from England in Wales and Scotland, Derry City from Northern Ireland in Ireland, the 3 Canadian teams in the MLS, FC Andorra in Spain, Wellington Phoenix (and from next season, Auckland FC) in Australia, etc. It would make sense for them to join a neighbouring country's league, not one miles away. 1) Bulgaria. Nearest country to Fenerbahce, shortest average travel distance for every team in the division to Istanbul, and I don't believe there's too much tension with Bulgaria compared with other countries in the region. 2) Greece. Bordering country, not ridiculously far for other teams to travel to, higher average quality so more competitive. 3) Cyprus. Unlikely due to the Turkish annexation of Northern Cyprus, and the fact it's worse quality than the other 2 just mentioned and a further travel distance. 4) Saudi Pro League. Less likely due to change of continent and further travel distance, but probably a higher quality than the rest of the leagues mentioned, also a fellow Muslim country, and Fenerbahce are geographically on the continent of Asia so it wouldn't be too out there. Problem is, Asia doesn't allow foreign clubs into the AFC Champions League even if they play in an Asian league, so that would probably put them off. 5) Egypt. Shorter travel time than Saudi Arabia and still a Muslim country, but still a continental switch and one they have no prior affiliation with. However, the Egyptian league provides a decent quality, probably matching that of Bulgaria, and there isn't any apparent restriction on foreign clubs in the African Champions League, but that's because virtually none currently exist, so it's not a problem they will have had to have considered before. Also, continental games in Africa will be a much bigger trek than Europe or Asia.

Yea, Fener does this every few years. But when things go in their favor...they are quiet. I mean that 'Cleared of wrong doing' crap? Yea, they didn't get 'cleared'. And the President is also a fan of their club and was quite 'supportive' of them until he propped up another team 'Istanbul Başakşehir' and got a Stadium with his own name on it. It is the eternal wheel of 'which big club is favored this time' and in the recent times, it is Galatasaray. And I see this as a Beşiktaş fan who, by our own incompetence, suffer quite a lot but also certain 'decisions' in these derbies. I mean, just look at the league table and see how BIG the gaps are with Galatasaray is at 81 points. Fener is 79...the next closest? Trabzon with 49 and then us Beşiktaş at 46. Compared to last year, it is RIDICULOUS...hilariously so. 50 goal difference both teams have compared to the rest of the league. And all the money those teams 'found' lying around while riddled in debts to sign those big name players... So forgive me if I am not sympathetic to Fener. And hell, if any other league is stupid enough to take them, go ahead, see how that turns out.

because it is ridiculous. we’re talking about the club that has already been proven of match fixing once, and consistently wins games over the years through questionable penalties in stoppage time. just because they’ve been on the bad side of Trabzonspor’s psycho fans a few times doesn’t change the fact that they’re the most spoiled and entitled club arguably in all of football. the world would genuinely be a better place without Şikebahçe.

@TwoPoachedEggs9 ай бұрын
if you want a good rabbithole to dive into, look into Trabzonspor's history within the Turkish league and you'll see their fan base has full right to feel like the Turkish FA has been against them over the past 20-30 years. Why? Because Trabzonspor was the first team outside of Istanbul to win the title, and when they won their first, they won more and were somewhat of a dynasty within Turkey following their first title win. This was an offense to the "establishment" aka the big 3 (Gala, Fener, Besiktas), in a sense of "the audacity of Trabzonspor to take the title away from Istanbul". The most egregious one is what the Trabzon fans call "the stolen season", a year where they were on top for the full season up until the end, when Fener went on an insane winning run to steal the title. Later the president of Fener went to jail for matchfixing, but the Turkish FA let Fener keep the title instead of Trabzonspor. The distaste from Trabzon fans towards the Turkish FA has not cooled down since then, a former Trabzonspor player has a statue in Trabzon depicting the moment he "sent off" the referee with the ref's red card (the ref had dropped his red card on the ground, the Trabzonspor player picked it up and "sent off" the ref with it). That's how much the action meant to Trabzon, it was a statement against the FA. There's a great COPA90 documentary on Trabzon, I'd recommend it.

Another thing to consider is, even if Fenerbahçe joins another league, they won't start in the 1st division of said league, no team would ever accept being relegated just because a team from another country wants to join them, that's just stupid lol (unless they're hugely compensated financially but EVEN THEM that's pretty stupid)
