Equatorial Guinea is a fascinating country. It’s the only country in Africa where Spanish the the most commonly spoken language and it’s not even on the equator. They also have among the most oppressive governments in the world. Most adults are conscripted into the army and are forced to work in bad conditions for little pay. Almost a third of all citizens have fled in recent years. But that doesn’t really have anything to do with soccer.

One thing that not every article is mentioning: FIFA said they denied his one-time switch in 2013 because he only got his Equatoguinean passport AFTER he was cap-tied to Spain. You need to have had dual citizenship in both countries BEFORE you played for the first one if you want to switch.

This is weird af. There are thousands of players that have played youth level football for various nations then switched their allegiance later in their careers because they weren't going to be called up for whatever full side they would've represented. Declan Rice is one, but the other way round once it was fairly clear he would end up in the full England squad if he kept playing the way he was.

No. It's if you play for a teams senior team or youth team when over the age of 21 and have no other nationalities you get cap-tied. The one-time switch is only possible BEFORE being cap-tied. But didn’t they change the rules for being cap-tied for competitive U21 matches fairly recently. So just a genuine question, maybe someone knows the answer

They changed, in 2021. Now a player is only cap-tied to a NT if he plays more than 3 official matches before his 22nd b'day, or he plays 1 official match (U21/U23 competitions do count) after his 22nd b'day. Munir is the most notable case that benefited from the change. He hadn't been allowed to play for Morocco NT because he played 1 official match for Spain NT (UEFA Euro Qualifiers) when he was 19. After the rule change 2021, his request to switch NT was accepted, and he had played for Morocco NT since.
