Thanks for the lesson! Just picked a Zebco Rod & Reel combo from the flea market for $8 bucks! It’s a Zebco 366-6 rod with a brass geared Zebco 33. After watching your videos, I was able to bring my reel back to life! The nice thing about casting these old ones, is that I feel like I have something solid and dependable in my hand that deserves respect, as opposed to a piece throw-away junk made in China! No more disposable reels for me!

Excellent - saved another one!!! Good for you - these reels feel special because they are special - someone made it, checked it, and was very proud of their work and 60 years later it still shows. Good on you for saving that reel - it will likely last far past you as well as the first owner(s). BTW, my saltwater reel is 80 . . . kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6HVh2uLpr-Lf7c

All the new spinncast reels are junk now. You have to buy an old Zebco and repair it if you want a good reel. My wife and kids can only use those type of reels so I go to the pawn shop to buy them.

I would have picked that as well - but this one is special, it belonged to my great-uncle: Roy Baker. He was a silent film actor (extra) - down on his luck he walked into a hotel in Miami and the manager said: "Where have you been?" Turns out their recent mail order hired hotel manager had failed to show - after hearing this Uncle Roy looked at him and said: "You're in luck - I just happen to be a hotel manager." He went on to become hotelier to the stars of that age and had hotels in Kennebunkport, Lake Placid NY, Lake Placid Fl, Sebring, Fl, Miami and who knows where else. Each had rides and amusements like Disney. He's listed in the who's who of hoteliers and part of his story is here on KZbin in "An Immigrant's Tale" about the early Mattson Family. I hope you have a fine time in your travels!

I have a Zebco 89 with a whitish coating. It is very difficult to remove this coating. It seems to be a soft material. A finger nail will scrape through it easily but sanding seems to help. Have you encountered this problem and how can I get the reel to look nice without having to resort to painting it?

I got mine from ACE, but any that have a workable ring in them will do. It may or may not have the exact feel - but will work and we get used to it until it's normal. There are other options as well, outlined in the other video on Zebco 33 O-ring & Drag fixes. I do hope you are successful!

@mattmattsongold

Bobby: the parts in it are heavier, beefier, to stand up to bigger fish. There are many people unaware your reel even exists! Follow the guide here and "Zebco 33 gear removal" vid - they'll work for your reel too (just don't lose any parts!) - excellent reel you have, good luck.

Mine is the plastic one in the top left of the beginning of the video the problem with mine is that the reel doesn’t move at all any chance that you could help
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 4 жыл бұрын
Juan: these reels are very similar in operation - between this and the 'Zebco 33 gear removal" video I did you should be able to get yours apart. If it doesn't move at all, there's a chance someone cinched the drag (if it has one) down all the way. You could have some line stuck or wrapped in the faceplate or in the gears. In any event, taking it apart will tell the tale. Hopefully it's not stripped gears and you can get it working quickly with lube. Best of luck with it!

Great Video, Thank You! I have a 56 model in black, it does not make a click when I engage the crank to wind back. Is that normal for those models?
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 4 жыл бұрын
No - if you have a clicker on the left and engage it, it should do the click thing - if you don't have a clicker and the reel is all black (metal), you have an much earlier model and it is normal. If you have a truly old one - I might consider retiring it, as they're getting scarce.

@@mattmattsongold It does have the left side click for still fishing. It does not have the anti-reverse and after I cast it does not click when it engages for the line retrieve like later models. got my grandpas old 33, looks similar your 67 reel, and i went to restring it, but now the drag is always allowed to pull out about the same, whether the dial is on or off, my guess is that i put it back together wrong, any ideas?
@adrunkcaliburn457
@adrunkcaliburn457 4 жыл бұрын
figured it out the little bent piece of metal fell out, but i found it and fixed it. the only downside is that I realize it isnt a 67, though it looks similar, it has a plastic body, (which is cracking), any fixes? other than buying a different reel with the metal housing.
@mattmattsongold
@mattmattsongold 4 жыл бұрын
Plastic body - pretty much get out the old JB Weld . . . You can of course try a soldering iron and melt the plastic back together. If it's a non-critical (flexing is the problem) area, you can get away with that. Good luck!

Technical Note: Don't put a lot of pressure on the spool once you take it out and start cleaning I cracked one pretty easily scrubbing with a wash cloth. Use an old tooth brush, the spool is a thin alloy aluminum that gets brittle with age

Thanks - I don't, and since the front (and back) covers are interchangeable (readily) for all years, it makes it hard to figure out for sure what you've got unless looking at the body itself. Markers are brass gears - steel gears - feather touch - no anti reverse - things like that.

@@terrybest8973 : may have found a solution for your 80-90 reels. ADFORS is .140 screen channel rubber - $3.25 at Walmart (that's all we've got near here). That is splined just like the original O-rings. If you can cut that to fit, and rejoin so it's smooth - might just do it. Worth a shot if you've got a bunch to repair (again I only have older reels to keep going). Good luck!

no not all the same the brakes on the newer 80s models suck that little rubber brake falls apart and then you are screwed but the old ones you can put a big Oring on them for a brake and the older ones last foreve if took care of but them from the 80 and 90 with the rubber brake on the vail always rot and fall apart if they made a replacement that would be freat but nope they wont do that just how it is i only have the old ones with the brake arms running to the vail and the brass ones are the best

The old reels were lasting so long they tried to design obsolescent parts into it so they'd have repeat sales. In the end - abandoned the whole thing and sent it to China to cheapen. Perhaps there is a standard 0 ring that could be found and glued into position on those reels with rubber cement? I know that ring on those is flattened - but seems a smaller thickness 0 might do the trick. You've probably tried all the combinations by now though.
