Windshield Trim Replacement - Z4 Vlog #8

I did this today and here are my tips. Get yourself a heat gun, a paint can opener (the little tool with a curved tip) from home depot, a bottle of Windex and a razor blade. Begin by gently heating up the top corner of the windshield and use the paint can opener tool to scoop it out from under the windshield - this will get it started and allow you to pull it out in a big section. Doing this will take time but it can be done. Patience is key here. Don't rush it. Use the heat gun every six inches and pull it out little by little. Once it is all out, use Windex and a razor blade to clean it all up. Make sure you get it clean right under the glass as this is where the new trim is going. For the next steps the painters tool 'hook' at the end will be used to manipulate the new trim into place. Use the painters tool and Windex to get any excess trim out from under the glass. Begin the new trim in the corner (any corner) and use a lot of Windex to wet the area. Then use the painters tool (hook end) to get the new trim under the glass as well as lift the other black rubber trim that is running on top of the windshield frame over the new trim. You will see that this tool is the perfect one to to use because it will not cut the rubber and has just the right amount of curve to push the trim into place. Use a dead blow mallet to gently tap the trim down as you work your way around the windshield. I was able to get this all done in about 4 hours.

Great hints... I wonder why none of them is presented in all the videos on YT. It's simply NOT just pressing the new trim in place of the old one! On top, you have to get the trim under the rubber (I noticed this when removing the old one) and it's also clear, that the sides needs to be pressed under the windshield (or at least in it's direction). Thanks for this video, I used it to guide the process for removing this trim from my ‘06 Z4. Everything went well removing what I believe is the original factory installed trim; I started up on the drivers side pillar, across the top and then down the passenger pillar when the metal “U” channel that is the basis for the trim and is also in my new OEM replacement, snapped off two inches below the top passenger side corner. Trying the restart the removal process after this happens by prying off the metal channel is not easy as over the next two hours, I worked to open the top edge of the metal strip from the windshield using my fingers and a plastic removal tool, hoping that I could create a spot to grab onto to complete the removal process. I considered using a straight edge screwdriver but didn’t want to go there. Every time You create a spot where you might be able to latch onto the metal channel, you also run the risk in using a plier or a vise grip of either cracking the windshield or taking a piece out of the pillar. Even though I had masked off the pillar, I still was hesitant to try. I faced the fact if something went wrong I’d face either spending hundreds of dollars to replace a windshield or trying to touch up a chunk out of the pillar. After lots of failed attempts, frustration set in and I took the car to a local windshield replacement place and booked an appointment. Tomorrow they plan to remove the windshield, finish removing the old weatherstrip, use adhesive to assure a good seal on the new trim and replace everything for $150. Given that option, I’ll spend that money knowing that I MAYBE could have found a way to peel the remaining strip off, but with my luck, probably not. I’m hoping your experience is better than mine. Thanks for the video. I just had to do this for my Z4. Just and FYI, 91% alcohol almost instantly removes any sticky gunk. You don't need to use a razor blade.

My jaw hit the floor when you started digging around with a chisel next the a glass edge. One slip up could easily chip the edge and start a crack.

Dude, you are the man. I have gone through so many of your diy videos for our z's. Ive had a black 03 for a past few years and just picked up a gray metallic one for my wife today, looks like your color. It needs the windshield trim and cowl replaced so I will be waiting your cowl video as well. Car only has 61k miles on it so I definitely couldn't pass on it today when I checked it out. I've done the sound deadening on mine like one of your videos and plan on doing it will the new one too. Thanks again,

@@derekmalunow8962, personally I didn't use any, however, it wouldn't hurt to use a little, especially above the top of the windshield.

Did the molding stay? Usually it’s a good idea to install a molding with the glass out so you can back it up so it doesn’t come out

I have a coupe as well, when pushing the metal "u" shape forward around the glass, the rear edge of molding is riding up in the air quite a bit. Is there something I'm missing here to seat the molding down flat on roof?? Thanks

Let the new trim piece sit in the sun to warm up and get soft before installing. Also spray both sides with something like Aerospace 303 protectant and it lets the new piece get pushed into position with a lot less effort.

OEM BMW trim is not expensive, less than 50 bucks. BUT you have 50/50 chance of successful replacing! I've tried it and ran into an issue and had to take the whole winshield out of the car by dealer (or glass shop). Since this seal is placed around the windshield PRIOR to fitting it on car, glue that's used to hold the winshield, can run under the trim. It's not visible once fitted but this glue under the trim hardens and will obstruct new trim fitting down flat or even getting it back in which was the issue with me. If the winshield was replaced in the past then glue was probably applied more liberally than factory and you might not being able to install it without taking the windshield out. So if you decide to try it, have some money on the side in case you'll have to take the whole winshield out. Honestly? Winshield out is the only method I'll use if I ever need to replace it again.

Help! I am attempting this and can’t get the new trim to go back in across the top. Do I insert the front edge first and then push down the back edge?

I had this problem too. You have to get the rubber around the windshield first and them press it into the grove at the bottom of the track. I had trouble getting enough leverage with my palm so I used the barrel of a rubber mallet against the gasket while I rolled it forward with both hands. That set the seal and it laid flat.

Make sure you have taken out all of the old trim and yes over time it'll stay.

Hello just bought a BMW 530i 07 and the front and rear seal weather it looks terrible where can I go and get it for cheap the dealer want to charge me a arm and leg they're telling me that the glass has to come out for them to do that job it's to much money is just ridiculous I really need to know where to get it from the for the windshield front and back can you please let me know

There's no sealant from factory its just a trim piece and over the years the old one got brittle and melted

2004 Z4 previous owner removed all the rubber trim around windshield. There's still a metal strip on the edge, do I remove that, too?

zed4me in the video I see the metal on the top of the windshield, it looks like it is probably part of the old rubber trim, which is not on the new trim piece that I ordered. Maybe the guy just didn't remove everything. I can't get the trim to pop in easily with that metal U-channel on the edge.

Brenda Kent It shouldn't be too easy to put in the new trim piece. It's supposed to be a snug fit. If there's a metal trim there I would try and remove it. I don't have any metal trim on mine and the weather strip has been good for a long time now.

Just a word of warning: you made the removal look very easy, so I attempted to do it last week, only for the windscreen to develop 4 cracks and some glass chipping off, and the trim only coming off in bits and pieces, with most stuck on hard. Now, my windscreen trim may have been particularly stuck, possibly glued when the windscreen was replaced by the previous owner, but be very very careful using any force on the trim and glass. I had to replace the windscreen in the end...

This did not worked for me. The trim would not go in and got damaged triying to force it in position. I had to buy it again and install it by removing the windshield as recomended by the manual repair.

The old trim went out in one piece. I saw another video in which they use some liquid as a lubricant to push the trim into position and that seamed to help a lot. In my case, almost all of it went in, but it would not fit into the uper corner.
