Great tutorial and video. Thank you Paul & Zed. Juat a note regarding oils: Grapeseed oil is considered a semi polymerizing oil. These are considered fully polymerizing (Food safe) oils: Flax/Linseed, Tung, Walnut, Safflower, Poppy seed. I use Safflower oil. It's almost clear (Will not change or taint the wood) and tastless.

Fantastic quality as usual. I was looking again at some if your older videos and noticed something missing...sharpening. A couple of your subjects mentioned having someone do sharpening for them but noone has demonstrated their methods. Obviously sharpening is a subject on it's own and might have been too much to include in a previous video but it might be a good subject for future videos. I think Mr. Stoffer demonstrated hook knife and auger but maintenance but I don't recall anyone showing axes knives or gouges. As usual this was a fantastic video.
@Zedoutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, firstly a sincere thank you for your kind words, in regards to sharpening I have covered it in the past but you are right in that I haven;t covered it in detail in recent times. I do have plans for that in the works over the coming months so stay tuned dude ~Peace~

The spoon I'm working on (my first one lol) was going pretty well but i've just seen A SPLIT develop at the top of the bowl on the left hand side. Is that the end of this spoon? On to the next one?
@Zedoutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately yes it's most likely going to be the end of that spoon, that being said I would finish it anyway so you get to practise your techniques. All part of the learning journey wheh you carve your next one ~Peace~

I know it's always a difficult thing to maintain, esp when out in the woods. Key is to pace yourself and be mindful at the the of your hands ~Peace~

@andrewhopkins73343 жыл бұрын
A great tutorial all very helpful for those of us just begining. One question how green/freshly cut was the wood?
@Zedoutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew the wood was fairly green, Birch tends to dry out fairly quickly so you don't wanna leave it to dry for too long before carving. Many thansk for watching and for the kind words ~Peace~
@pauladamson91913 жыл бұрын
As Zed says, it was very green. I carve wood upto six months old but within days of preparing a blank as thats when they start to dry out.
