In your opinion, what's the most versatile prime lens? Ever since I picked up the Zeiss Batis 2/40 CF in Hong Kong two months ago, it's been my go-to lens for pretty much everything: KZbin, Wedding, Food, Travel, etc. Prior to this purchasing decision, I debated about getting the Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 again - a lens that I regret selling a few years ago. I wanted the lens again for KZbin Talking Head Style vlogs because the f/1.4 is incredibly helpful for blurring out the distractions in the background. And it was the focal length I was more fond of over the 50mm at the time. But I held off on it when I heard that 40mm was coming and wanted to see how different it is despite being almost too similar in focal lengths. To my surprise, I love the 40mm A LOT. The Close Focusing capability really gives this lens the edge in versatility. I can shoot wide without worry about any sort of distortion. I can shoot tight to get marco-ish shots on details that I want the viewers to focus on. Sure, it's not f/1.4 but I'm hardly ever a 1.4 shooter nowadays and I much value the smaller form factors when it comes to gear since I'm on-the-go often. Without making this post too long, I dive deeper into comparing the Batis 40mm with the Zeiss 55mm in my latest video seen above! In it, I also talk about the update that corrected the issue that the Batis 40mm had. I owned the Sony/Zeiss 55/1.8 and then bought the Sony/Zeiss 50/1.4, and the 1.4 is an astonishing lens. I don't like how much larger and heavier it is, but is produces images with that magical quality of the best lenses of all time. Three dimensional images, micro-contrast, and beautiful color and contrast that rivals a Hasselblad medium format system. @stephenjohnson73995 жыл бұрын
...have always felt a 50mm/55mm is too tight for environmental portraits, normal POV, city or street. The 40mm is much more relaxed frame. The Batis 2/40 has the beautiful Zeiss look, is fast enough, and handles well all day. The close focus is really a must have. My other walking around prime is the Batis 1.8/85. Don't need a 50mm.
@ArkitectFitness5 жыл бұрын
I primarily shoot with the Batis 25mm (picked that up after watching your video comparing it to the 24mm GM), but I recently got a used 55mm for $600. I think the 55mm is better than the 25mm in just about every way. It has faster autofocus, it's sharper, and it just has some additional "wow" factor. I'm not sure if the 40mm makes sense for me now because I can cover most of the ground I need between the 25-55. Looking at maybe the 85mm next, but having a hard time finding one used.
@JasonVong5 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I didn't think the 55 was that much faster considering it's any older lens. You probably don't need the 40mm unless you want the close focusing. 25 + 85mm is a great combo as well!

To keep a long story short: I own the FE 35mm 1.4, the Batis 40mm 2.0 and the FE 50mm 1.4 and: my favorite lens to go is the Batis 2/40CF just because of the weight and CF option. The 35mm and 50mm F1.4 have awesome bokeh - but they are bulky and often too heavy to carry them around a long shooting day. The 2/40CF is a no-brainer as long as you dont need the F1.4 for available light situations or the better bokeh. On my flickr account you will see all lenses (and some more) mentioned above - so decide by yourself whats best. www.flickr.com/photos/ajlphotograph/

Currently using the sigma 35 1.4 art . Struggling on streets due to the size and weight and the attention it brings. Eye af fails sometimes as well, and somehow there's a flatness in the images that I don't like

Hi Jason, 👋 can you put an explanation of what u said in the video in Arabic, you can use the translator because I find it difficult to explain all what u said about the difference between the two lenses and I am interested in the lens 40 mm If you help me with that I will be grateful to you Thanks a lot ☺️

it definitely can be and I use it for the weddings I shoot

Hi Jason :) i know we r talking about primes but my question is how does the close focussing capability compare to the tamron 28-75 and 17-28.. f 2.8.. also in any case for follow focus stuff for videography since all of thw above lenses dont have manual focussing does it make sense to invest ?

I don't know... I was waiting for this or the Sigma 40, but neither of these caught my attention... I might go back to Super35 and those Veydra lenses

Time to start saving for the 40mm that price tag is hefty. Then again most lenses aren’t that cheap.

Good lenses aren't cheap unless... it's the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 😜

Love the Batis 2/40CF is my favorite lens that is light and with close up capabilities. Missed bringing it with me on my last trip when i opted to go with the 16-35GM instead.
@JasonVong5 жыл бұрын
What was the experience like? Did you felt the 40mm would've gotten a lot of the shots you wanted that the 16-35 couldn't?
@neil_nicholas5 жыл бұрын
@@JasonVong the 16-35 gave me the versatility of a wider angel shots and that zoom range of what 19mm different to play with? But the Batis just gave me a more "feel good" factor (maybe the weight, focus ring and lcd played some part to it LoL) when using it and it is more comfortable to do street shots. I even prefer doing close up with it too.

WITHOUT EVER mentioning other 40/-ish-mm lenses - what a feat ! (FE-mount: Voightlander MF f/1.2, Sigma, Zooms, +perhaps others) Just would have been natural. So now omission is awkward.

Thanks for the great video! However you still did not convince me. Fixed focal length lenses need to be FAST for me. If I sacrifice variable focal length for a fixed focal length, I want something in return. And for me this is: sharpness, speed and bokeh. And I want all three of them and lots of them. And F2 at 40mm is for me - kinda boring. If it would be an f1.4 and the lens would be as great as the 24mm GM at F1.4, I might be tempted to get one. But an F2.... nah, not for me. My choice: Sony/Zeiss 50mm 1.4, very sharp, great bokeh and really fast aperture even though the 35mm 1.4 is a very close number 2 for me and for the same reasons!

@@rattoh Makes sense, if you need closeup capabilities and don't need f1.4. For me it's vice versa.
