I looked at this lens for a while when I started into the Fujifilm system, but after I got the XF 35mm f/1.4 (a year after the 35mm f/2 Fujicron), I stopped looking for my normal lens. The 35mm f/1.4 was so good IMO that I felt that I gave up nothing from my full frame Nikon DSLRs moving into Fuji. Enjoyed your video and hope you get some nice images with your new lens

@ it is very well built and very sharp. There is no focus limiter so focusing dom close up to infinity can take time.

This is my favorite lens for the X system. I learned about it from the YTber GXACE. Its colors and rendering are beautiful. I pair it with my XT5.Edit: most of the time, I don't give a sh*t about corner sharpness. The lens is plenty sharp enough.

Thank you for the review on the newer X-T5. I have used this Zeiss lens on my 16 MP X-T1 and my 24 MP X-T2 and it's super sharp there. I love it for the unique (for a modern AF lens) bokeh style and the overall rendering character, together with the cool lens design. For general purposes, I also own a XF 35mm F2, but the Zeiss always feels special to me and produces more "remarkable" images. I clearly prefer it over the XF 35mm F1.4, which I also had for couple of weeks, but never felt so special compared to the Zeiss.

My compare to XF 35/1.4 on an X-T2: Wide open the Zeiss@F1.8 has good sharpness in the center, while the Fujinon@1.4 is ok. So Zeiss is better, but please keep in mind that the Fuji has a bit faster maximum aperture, so comparison is not 100% fair. Stop down to F2.0 and they change places, the Fujinon has a bit edge. The center is decent sharp on both, the corners are soft. CA is becoming absent. At F2.8 they change places again and the Zeiss is better, especially if you compose your subject close to the edges. The Fuji still soft on edges, while the Zeiss has good sharpness on the whole frame. Both shine at F4-F8, both have it's best performance at F4. For portraits both useable wide open, if I have a younger subject I prefer to stop down to F2-2.8 for better sharpness and optimal optical performance. The Zeiss has a bit brighter, more vibrant colours, and has that 3D pop if the subject maintains distance from the background. Both bokeh can be busy if the background has great variability in lightness or colour. If I want to blur the background the optimal result comes from the Fujinon@f2.0, if I want to show some environment I prefer the Zeiss@F2.8 or slower. But both are a great lens, the differences are small. From a design perspective I love them both. The Zeiss is very unique with its industrial design, the Fujinon has that rectro vibe with it's cool squared metal lenshood. To be honest, I prefer the 23mm focal lens (ekv. 35mm) to 35mm (ekv. 50mm) but despite this, these two optics are among my favourites. I wish the 23mm lens would be so cool on Fujifilm.

I love this lens. I think the choice for those with an appreciation of optical qualities and characteristics, its this or the XF35/1.4. The 33 is just to bland and boring, necessary at times but a killjoy. I think the marvel that Zeiss have achieved here is; 1) acceptably sharp at 1.8 in the center, making all portraits at 1.8 a strong option 2) unique soap bubble bokeh 3) a Zeiss 3D pop. It depends on the light, distance etc, but sometimes the subject matter can really punch off the page which at 1.8 on APS-C can be hard to do. 4) good contrast 5) good colours 6) good micro contrast 7) acceptable AF 8) lightweight and compact 9) CA decently controlled The bad would be some AF noise and the rubber for aperture and focus ring (you can't easily feel what yer hand is resting on and the rubber can get loose over time with climates that experience intense temperature changes). I would have preferred a different texture so that I know I have my fingers either on the focus ring or aperture ring. On the whole it is an incredibly unique lens that every Fuji owner should experience and play with. My only gripe is that there are not more lenses like this, its not easy to push the vintage vibe whilst not being just a trash lens (*cough SIRUI Sniper cough*).

The first time I noticed bokeh like this, and really appreciated it, was in a movie theater watching Jurassic Park. Since then, I’ve always loved this type of bokeh. I mostly bought this lens because of you; you put it on my radar a couple of years ago in a comment, but it was really hard to find a good one here in Spain.

@@erjonpovataj1468 Viltrox 27mm is a great lens, superb sharpness and bokeh, so if you prefer that go for it, this however is Zeiss, and I owe a number of Zeiss lenses, and there is something about those colors you don't get with other lenses. My opinion is this, if you like post processing, faster lenses and hella sharp, take viltrox. If you like usability (Zeiss is much smaller/compacter), and SOOC results take the Zeiss. I have both and in studio I'll take viltrox, walk around Zeiss always..hope that helped.

I you like lens with character and compact than get the Zeiss. If you want a do it all lens with great sharpness wide open and built like a tank, get the Viltrox.

@@erjonpovataj1468 I've owned many Fuji lenses. Now just Zeiss and Viltrox...I prefer the color rendition of both over the Fuji, lenses f you want fast take the Viltrox, I'd take that over the Fuji anyday. I'd also take the Zeiss over the Fuji.

Hey Andrei, I am in the market for a new setup, and I was wondering if you could give your input? I currently have a X-T1, but in 7 months I'm going on a 6-month vacation around the world, mostly Africa, Asia and New Zealand. For this, I'd love a newer camera to 'document' my trip using both photography and videography. I am currently exclusively a photographer, but I'd really love to dabble in the art of cinematic films in style with someone like Phillip Q Vu, Natalie Lynn, Dayo and Oliver Keys. Therefore I'd really like a camera that could enable me to shoot somewhat cinematic films and amazing stills. In photography, I mainly shoot nature, street and fast-moving sports. It's quite a challenge, to me at least, to find just one camera in the Fuji-lineup that suits my needs, but I have been looking at the X-T4, X-T5, X-S20, X-H2 and the X-H2S. I'd like for it to be as cheap as possible, whilst still not holding me back in the creative outflow. I'm really quite stuck, and any and every help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I think the best option for what you are describing would be the X-H2S, I know it is the most expensive but they have good prices second hand. The second option would be the X-S20 a good hybrid camera.

From what I've seen here and elsewhere, it's a great character lens with only f1.8 on APSC, I wouldn't pay over €300-400 to be honest, especially with the latest range of China lenses improving a lot. The Fuji 35 f2 is €380 with WR, this Zeiss is €500-700 in Germany. If it was f1.4 with WR, it would be a different story.
