Since the release of *The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*, the Blood Moon mechanic has been a mystery. Some say it's caused by killing a certain amount of enemies, others say it's caused by disrupting the game so drastically it needs to reset itself, and some thing it's purely random. They are wrong. The Blood Moon mechanic is merely a timer! Let me explain...

Blood Moons are triggered once a flag has been set by 2 Hours 48 Minutes 15 Seconds (real world time) of uninterrupted play and you progress to the next day via sleeping or sitting at a fire.
Let's break this down a little bit:
- A Blood Moon flag exists. This means, Blood Moons are not random.
- The Blood Moon flag is set via a timer. This timer:
* is 2 Hours 48 Minutes 15 Seconds of real world time
* is 7 Days 15 Minutes in-game time
* only increases while the player is actively playing the game. This means no menus, map, cut-scenes, sleeping, weapon hot-swapping, NPC dialogue, etc. Link must be in the open world playing the game.
* only sets the flag, it does not trigger a Blood Moon. (I made link run into a wall for 6 hours straight and didn't get a single Blood Moon)
- Once the Blood Moon flag has been set, you must allow the game to load the next day's moon schedule outside of continuous uninterrupted game play.
* We accomplish this by sitting at a fire until the next Night. This gives the game time to load the Blood Moon code while it is fast forwarding in-game time.
Step-By-Step Guide:
1. Make sure your system is plugged in and your controller batteries are charged. They will be on for 3ish straight hours.
2. Travel to the Old Man's house on the Great Plateau.
3. Put Link directly into the back left corner of house.
4. Place something on your controller that keeps your left joystick forward without manual intervention.
5. Set a timer on your phone or computer for 2 Hours 49 Minutes and walk away from your controller.
6. After 2 Hours 48 Minutes 15 Seconds, fast travel to the Dueling Peaks Stable.
7. Validate the Blood Moon will *not* trigger tonight by talking to the NPC Hino and asking about tonight's moon.
8. Sit at the fire, or sleep, until tomorrow night.
9. Validate the Blood Moon *will* trigger tonight by talking to the NPC Hino and asking about tonight's moon.
10. Wait until 12:00 AM in-game for the Blood Moon to trigger.
11. Profit.

You know you didn't have to watch the whole video right? He very clearly explains how the blood moon mechanic works in the first couple minutes of the video and the rest is, as he blatantly states, proof. So you could have stopped watching from the first minute knowing how to "force" a blood moon. Also, forced means you know how to make something happen so by using that knowledge you're willingly making it happen, hence "forcing" it. The only unfortunate thing here is that there's no known way to force it besides waiting, which he shows you as proof. So logically, this video is not misleading. But I suppose logic isn't your strong suit, so dislike away

I remember my first blood moon came when I was doing the Sheep Rustlers Side Quest. As I was about to approach the monsters I needed to kill, the Blood Moon began. I didn't notice a thing. It wasn't until the sky turned red (I just got into the monster's sight) that I noticed something was happening. I turned back and ran until the cutscene happened. It was some scary stuff because I didn't know what was happening. My first thoughts were that maybe this place isn't one I should be going to this early in the game.

The blood moon always has the worst timing. I was attempting evantide and I was in the middle of the hinox. Cutscene activates, and when it's over I get smacked in the face down to 1 heart. That was painful

I got lucky and had a blood moon occur just before I made my way to Eventide. I fought the Hinox the hard way... I climbed up to a cliff it couldn't reach me (not even the stones it threw could touch me) and just threw bombs at it. It took nearly half an hour (which pretty much ate up the defense buff I had before I actually got to Eventide, I ate a meal that gave me a high level 30 min defense buff just before landing on the island, the buff carries over), but I did it.

The best way to deal with the Hinox (at least in Master Mode where it's HP regens) is just to paraglide on top of it's belly when it sleeps, use Stasis on it to buy a few seconds, and grab the sphere and leave. No need to fight it honestly. You can do the same thing to grab the weapons around it's neck for an easier time on the island.

Also, I must add that Blood Moons cannot and will not happen before Link speaks to King Rhoam on top of the Temple of Time. After speaking to him and receiving the Paraglider, all features are unlocked (which includes Blood Moons, Rain/Snow, Thunderstorms and the removal of the death zone barrier object surrounding the Great Plateau). Also, killing 30 enemies or more will actually set a flag for a Blood Moon, when the flag is set, the game has to wait until the moon's phase becomes a full moon. Either 7 hours and 15 minutes of in-game time without skipping time, or killing over 30 enemies, whichever comes first.

Zachary Erickson He probably means mini-boss enemies, such as lynels, hinox, talus,etc. There are a lot of lynels in the Hebra plains if I remember correctly. Also, fun fact blood moons cannot trigger while being in Hyrule castle(the moon will still be red, but the cutscene won't trigger) but will trigger the next day unless you are still in Hyrule Castle.

Not sure if this deserves to be pinned by the OP but: I think my method is the closest you can get to having some kind of control over it. When you see it coming, you hear the music and see the ashes, transport to a shrine (I always go to the one close to Link's house, it probably works anywhere) and go in before 12. Stay there for a couple of mins of the real world. When you come out, the time will be past 12 but the moon didn't take place. Then you know the moon is coming the next night. You can keep delaying it following the same method. I guess that's how you can make it happen "on demand" lol.

One way I've repeatedly triggered a "glitched" Blood Moon, is by Magnesis-carrying a metal object as high and as distant from Link as I can, then walk around Hateno Village for a little while while still levitating the object. The thing is, there don't seem to be many Magnesis-able objects close to Hateno, so I carry one of the metal boulders from the Dueling Peaks gorge area.

I think the glitched blood moons are caused when there are to many sprites loaded to try to get rid of potential overloads. I know this because in an accacio code video, someone tried to spawn in 1000 birds and a blood moon instantly occurred before they could all spawn in.

Sometimes, when I see the blood moon, there are a few more things I want to do before I let it happen, such as actually find the location of the Mijah Rokee Shrine, then unlocking it by stripping down during the blood moon. Fortunately, I know of three ways to postpone the blood moon: 1: Wait in Hyrule Castle until after midnight. You can get inside instantly if you've already unlocked the Saas Ko'sah Shrine, which is inside Hyrule Castle. 2: If you've entered, but not yet beaten, a divine beast, wait inside it until after midnight. 3: Wait inside any shrine until after midnight. This is the easiest tactic to access, but it's also particularly tedious. While you're inside a shine, you cannot tell time unless you pause, check the time on the map screen, unpause, procrastinate, then pause again. Repeat the process until the map screen's clock says 12:00 AM, or 12:05 AM to be on the safe side. I suppose the Trial of the Sword might work similarly, but I would not recommend doing that with an ulterior motive. At least you can get out of the trial at any time by opening the map screen and warping to any given travel point. If you do, your clothes and items will be restored as though you beat the trial, but the Master Sword will not be upgraded until you actually beat the trial properly.

I find that if i go to the castle and kill a few guardians and flying guardians and then leave to a stable. Sleeping once or twice often triggers a blood moon for me. I'm not sure of the mechanics behind it or if it's true but maybe the game likes to keep the castle protected more than other areas. Sometimes for fun, i eat a 30min attack meal and go to the castle to see how much of the surrounding area i can clear of guardians in that time and when i leave a blood moon nearly always follows soon. It might be worth looking into this to see if the castle does have a different effect on the blood moon. yeah I am pretty sure killing so many enemies will trigger one too. I haven't made any attempt at confirming that yet but I have noticed the game.seems to "flag" for a blood moon after you kill a bunch of overworld bosses and/or guardians in a short span of time. maybe I'll see if I can trigger one tomorrow on purpose that way...

Remember, you can redo the guardian fighting shrines each blood moon, and there are weapons around the map (Royal Claymore, Great Thunder and Flame blade, etc.) that also respawn in a blood moon

There is always a blood moon in Hyrule Castle (every night), although it doesn't resurrect enemies. So I think the easiest method to force a blood moon is to first go to Hyrule Castle and activate the shrine there, which is in the docks. From then on, any time you want a blood moon, fast travel to this shrine near 12pm and wait until the air gets red, which normally would be followed by the blood moon cutscene, but that one doesn't trigger in Hyrule Castle. There aren't even any enemies in that spot, you'll be completely safe. Anyway, after you have done this, exit the area. Without fail, there will always be a blood moon in the overworld the next night.

Actually, no. Turns out that by coincidence, every time I had been in Hyrule Castle was on the night of a blood moon. There is not a blood moon in Hyrule Castle every night. But if you stay in the castle for a few in-game days the thing where the air turns red but no enemies are resurrected will eventually start happening every night, and the rest of what I said is true. Anyway, if you are in Hyrule Castle and kill a lot of enemies, you are likely to get a non-resurrecting blood moon quite soon. For example, one of the latest times I went in there, there had been a blood moon the previous day, and after only like three in-game days, I started getting non-resurrecting blood moons in Hyrule Castle. If you think killing Guardians and Lynels is tedious you can get a long way just by killing Lizalfos and Moblins, there are lots of those in the part of the caste where the shrine is.

I know how to trigger a glitched blood moon, even during the day. You need to essentially go so fast, the game can't keep up, you'll know you're doing it right if Link freezes randomly, but the world around him still moves, like grass flowing in the wind, etc. It just means the world is loading assets and can't keep up with your position, keep doing this and eventually it'll cause a glitch to happen and a blood moon may trigger immediately after Link has unfroze, or that night at 12 AM. I've playtested and confirmed, my method is to shield surf across hyrule while it rains for maximum surf time, but I think using the Metal Chest and Mine Cart glitch would be better, since it can move insanely fast, but it's harder to control. The shield surfing method needs to be done on mostly down-hill areas, where one part of the map intersects with another, say, Hyrule field to Zora's domain, transitioning assets to despawn from Hyrule field, and assets to spawn in Zora's domain. Go ahead and give it a try, it works for me and I can trigger Blood moons whenever I need to.

I thought killing enemies made the blood moon come faster, specially Guardians, I guess I'm wrong but I've always felt that the more enemies I killed the faster the moon came out. By the way, you can stop the Blood Moon from showing up if you go to a shrine at 12 PM, it basically doesn't reset the enemies on the map and as long as you are inside a shrine, enemies will not be brought back to life. In the Castle something similar happens, you can actually see if you wait outside how the blood moon triggers over and over again but enemies don't respawn until you leave the area and the blood moon properly resets them. In fact, I've seen sometimes the Guardian Turrets glitching, appearing and disappearing, specially the ones near Zelda's Study, it's like the game tries to spawn the enemies but you are forcing the game not to by being inside the Castle area. HOWEVER, this doesn't apply to the fight against Ganon, which can be quite bullshit if you are a new player in this game, the blood moon can actually trigger when Ganon is almost dead and you have spent a ton of weapons on him, it restores his health back and you are left there with basically no weapons whatsoever and Ganon full hp again.

Has anyone else ever noticed how the night of a Blood Moon if you spend it in a shrine then it will be delayed to the next day? Once it was 11:55 and the whole world was red and the music was really fast... then I entered the shrine and the Blood Moon was delayed until the next night. So if you ever want to delay the blood moon, enter a shrine for a while! (But if you delay it too long, you’ll have a glitched Blood Moon that just happens because it needs to respawn some stuff.)

Get a flame weapon. Drop wood by the pedestal. Remove your armor. Hit the wood to ignite it, sit until night. Rinse and repeat. Once you see the pedestal light up orange, remove your weapon and stand on it to reveal the shrine. Takes less just a few minutes.

I simply killed rare enemies. The three Hinox brothers are a great start, as well as a few of the golems near the Great Plateau. If you knock down a couple Lynels too, you can trigger a blood moon in a matter of a couple in-game days. And you get good drops in the process. Urbosa's Fury goes a long way here. It usually takes me a day or two in game to kill enough to force a respawn. Even mid-game Hinox' and golems are relatively easy to kill with less health/stamina/gear. That's a more reliable method than anything, and there's no shortage of places to attack minibosses. Might as well upgrade your gear.

I've identified a way to cause a blood moon to occur every evening, I'm sure it is a glitch in the game, but it's consistent and happens 100% of the time. All you have to do is head West from the Great Fairy Fountain outside Kakariko Villiage, stand on top the first archway that leads to Lanayru Promenade. Late in the evening, you'll be greeted by the great dragon Naydra, and before you're able to whip out your bow to claim a scale, tooth, claw, or horn shard, you'll experience an immediate Blood Moon, which unfortunately upon the completion of the animation, the dragon is long gone. It was extremely frustrating because I thought it was a very clever/lazy way to get dragon parts and just camp there... it was not the case. But if you're looking to respawn enemies or weapons, this is the sure fire way to make it happen.

One thing that I found helpfull was to kill all the overworld bosses that I knew of. Before i decided to try killing all of the overworld bosses i couldnt get one to spawn for more than 20 in game days. Once i killed about 5 hinoxes, 5 taluses, and 3 lynels the blood moon spawned the same night. I wasted alot of time just relighting campfires. Like so othera can see.

Just put a travel medallion at the spot you need to be for the blood moon. When the blood moon starts just take your stuff off & travel to the site you picked. You'll have plenty of time. That way you can do other stuff without wasting 2 or so hours screwing around. :))

The surest way I've found to trigger a blood moon that definitely doesn't take 3 hours is just to go on a slaughtering spree at some enemy camps, usually going through and killing 3-4 enemy camps seems to trigger a blood moon (usually 3-6 enemies at most enemy camps), there's no way to confirm for sure or not but killing multiple higher tier enemies seems to shorten how many enemies need to die before a blood moon triggers, I know if you go from the top of Death mountain down to the Leviathan skeleton, and start from the first Silver Lynel there and make your way over to the Hebra Mountains killing all the Silver Lynels, by the time you kill the last one in that area right at the top of the map in that huge snow covered field, a blood moon generally happens the next in game day (at least whenever I've done this that's what happens, its how I grinded out Lynel parts and whatnot to upgrade the Fierce Deity armor set) its been a while since I've done this particular path cause I just started playing through master mode, but I believe there's 4-5 Silver Lynels on that path.

just because you are right does not mean we are wrong... in programming, it would be foolish to assume something like a blood moon would have only one trigger... furthermore, we know the blood moon is a feature, not only satisfying the player but satisfying the games processor as well... remember that the game remembers EVERY enemy you killed... this takes up memory... take up enough memory, and the game slows down, by this means, the games memory is reset and therefore processess faster... this is naturally what a programmer wants... so by all definitions, despite evidence, it is most probable that killing enemies speeds up the blood moon probability... and yes, running into a wall takes memory so this theory is still supported.... and one way to prove That you're wrong when your saying we are wrong... is very simple... multiple blood moons in less than 3 hours.... as such, i went on a killing spree murdering every enemy i could find and in an hour i got a blood moon... another killing spree later, another blood moon... because all those kills are logged and slow the game down which brings us back to the blood moons purpose... to free up memory.... and because it remembers who you killed, it also remembers who you didn't kill.... so in theory, Leaving a survivor in a camp should take more memory because it can't cross off That entire camp as being killed as there is one left, keeping that file open and taking up memory.... i dare you to try it.... mark every camp you find and kill all but 1 enemy... you'll have a blood moon in no time and have done something far more interesting than running into a wall... furthermore, less to do with a blood moon but rather lynels... i can't confirm anything but it seems when you start killing several lynels each blood moon, their drops are better... i usually kill 12 lynels each moon and I've had dozens of 5 shot bows, at least a few dozen crushers over 100... and even about 10 savage Lynel swords with a power of 100 or more... i was shocked when i was repeatedly turning down 5 shot lynel bows.... otherwise, i would drop my current 5 shot and pick up the 5 shot that still had 100% durability... it really is a definitive cycle, not to mention i maxed my shock fire and ice arrows several times over....

I've idled around for 7 hours and didn't get a blood moon, i've done the camp trick for 16 hours at one point and no blood moon (fucking washa bluff) but the moment i started a mass murder spree i got multiple blood moons. And i suspect the thing about getting better weapons is accurate. i've found that the lynels near the giant horse tend to drop better tiered gear faster.

I actually found a way myself to trigger a glitched bloodmoon. I tested it on Wii U, and it works sometimes (2|10 chance). You have to be near a new region that hasn't been loaded* in your play session. Then you have to press the Right Stick to zoom in, and cancel it with B rapidly. When you do this, you have to walk to the nearby region until suddenly a bloodmoon appears. If you do this incorrect, nothing will happen. If you nearly made it, a "loading" text will appear and you can't move for like 5 seconds. I think when you rapidly zoom in and cancel it with B, no enemies can load. And when they are all loaded at once, a bloodmoon will appear, preventing a game crash. *The Region is loaded, because it's open world, but the objects and enemies aren't. // I tested this glitch on the Wii U version, from Hyrule Field to Akkala, and from the desert to the sandstorm region. Both worked after several attempts

Just kill a bunch of enemies. I killed almost all the Lynels including the ones in hyrule castle, went to go fight the one near Zora’s domain. Blood moon occurred at like, 4:00pm. Just kill a bunch of enemies. It triggers a blood moon. Also super simple.
