This is still one of the best title screens to any video game to me. I have so many memories just staring at that cliff, the background, the sword. Embedded into my mind forever.

The whole "spoiler" talk around 2:40:00 is exactly why I'm kinda glad I don't watch live. Because to me, that information is not a spoiler. Someone clearing up a misunderstanding about the game isn't a spoiler. It'd be like saying "you spend stamina when you roll" in a Souls game. What's worst about this isn't even that Lobos doesn't understand something. That's whatever. But the chat hivemind immediately jumping on that so they have something to condemn, therefore means that you have now successfully blocked ANY amount of speculation about anything. Someone joins the stream, sees that levelup screen and thinks to ask "yo, can you not just save up the xp for the next upgrade?" when he hasn't seen that game before in his life, would be a "spoiler" in chat's eye and get immediately chased off or just banned. Someone who wants to speculate on something the story presented, could instantly be removed as a spoiler, because now there's a precedence that anything that Lobos doesn't recognize as real, is a spoiler. All in all it's not a big deal, of course, but man, that kinda nonsense just kills the enjoyment from "chat on-screen", because it'll just be about that forever after that.
@taylorhunt8582 жыл бұрын
It doesn't even have to to be that people outright say what isn't being understood as a mechanic. A lot of people want to figure things out for themselves, but simply saying something like "You are wrong about how leveling up works" or the tip "try hitting cancel instead" are both ways to let the player 'figure things our for themselves' without anything being spoiled in anyway for anyone. The calling of any form of help as 'spoilers' is kinda sucky in moments like this.
@namename80042 жыл бұрын
It's a whole witch-hunt culture against "spoilers" that Lobos has cultivated, because he thinks he can have the same experience playing a game while interacting with an audience that he could while playing offstream. He's absolutely wrong. The worst part is when mods occasionally get to just unprompted give advice that would absolutely cause the entire chat to jump any other viewer with sackbeating emotes. I mean, I can understand where he's coming from to an extent. I like to go into games blind and discover what the game has. I also don't choose to involve hundreds of people in my blind playthroughs, though. There's certainly a line that's reasonable to try keeping people from crossing. Like people would inevitably discuss story details related to endings of games, which I can totally respect trying to avoid even while streaming. It's just extremely frustrating and greatly detracts from my enjoyment of his videos. I would have definitely stopped watching a long time ago if Lobos wasn't so damn entertaining otherwise. He has a peculiar sense of humor and a good-natured attitude. Also the clutch gamer moments. Well, I actually did unsub for quite a while, but I came back...

It seems completely arbitrary when something counts as backseating and when it's ok. One time someone points thing out and gets away with it and another time a mod deletes the message and replies with the !backseating command. It's an absolute mood swing with no clear line.
@mattweber25122 жыл бұрын
The thing about spoilers is that Lobos is trying to get the pure experience of playing, i.e. the way it would be if he were playing back in 1988. But back in 1988 we used Nintendo Power and other guides shamelessly, and also just had friends tell us things. There were a couple of things in the first Legend of Zelda that I would have never known had someone not told me, like the exact bush to burn to find level 8. I'd be surprised if there were 50 people that got through Zelda 2 back in the day completely blind.
@xBINARYGODx2 жыл бұрын
If lobos wants that experience, he can easily have it - he streams basically work-hours most of the time and makes it clear he plays some games off-stream. If he wants to have that old-school experience (that didnt really exist), he can have it. No one forced him to play this on stream.

@namename80042 жыл бұрын
There's a difference between challenging and masochistic. NES games are pretty crap. The SNES is just objectively better and has objectively better versions of the biggest NES games. Of course, that's putting nostalgia aside. It's really the most noticeable gap between console generations. Next gen went 3D and it was probably too soon for the jump.

I think some enemy and level design is pretty frustrating or kinda broken. There are situations where damage is simply unavoidable and/or enemies overwhelm you and stay on your ass hitting you multiple times. Also the respawn time for enemy encounters in the overworld is way too short. Like just give me a couple fucking seconds more to let me find that one specific tile that looks like all the dozens of tiles around it without enemies spawning every 2 seconds. I have to admit though this game aged a lot better than the first one and I'm definitely having more fun with it, but damn is it exhausting.

Personally, with the poor translations of NPC conversations, somewhat experimental leveling systems, intentional design that makes things so obscure/require ridiculously random actions to discover that you need a Nintendo Power/strategy guides just to figure things out which are common in old NES games, I think allowing some more input from chat wouldn't be a bad idea. The real difficulty in the old games is usually high enough to be a good challenge. The aggravation from the artificial difficulty really just lessens the experience. This game, like Castlevania 2, suffers greatly in the translation department. When properly done, the hints etc. from NPCs, while not telling you exactly what to do, at least make it possible to figure things out on your own in a reasonable amount of time. It's one of the reasons the game didn't do so well (as far as Zelda games go) when it came to sales despite it being good otherwise.

If you explain a game mechanic to a streamer that the original game manual explains, is that backseating?
@pious832 жыл бұрын
If it isn't asked for, Yes.
@WingmanSR2 жыл бұрын
@@pious83 I suppose so, but all the old NES games, etc, were incredibly cryptic in game and they put the 'tutorial' in the game manual. LoZ even had a mostly-full map included with the cartridge. As a kid, I probably wouldn't have gotten to the 2nd dungeon without it lol
@pious832 жыл бұрын
@@WingmanSR Yet people still finished them with or without the manual. Zelda 2 isn't something ultra obscure, like puzzles in a Point-and-Click adventure. That you couldn't brute force your way to victory. Unsolicited backseating tends to be less about helping someone than attention seeking. Unless asked for, it is never a good thing.

@@WingmanSR We rented loads of NES games, back in the day. Most didn't come with manuals. The ones we owned that did, were games like Mario. Wherein the manual was flavour text and character bios.
