Song of Storms is the "Blue Bossa" of video game standards. And what better person to cover it than someone with rain in their name? If only I knew someone like that... Insaneintherainmusic's video game jazz saxophone cover of Song of Storms from Zelda Ocarina of Time.

I’ve played this song so many times before - it’s one of the go-to songs for jamming at places like Zeldathon and MAGFest! It’s really interesting to me that there are so many cultural parallels between video game music and jazz music, especially when it comes to knowledge of standard repertoire. As someone who makes a living between these two worlds, it’s really interesting to see the parallels here! You’ve got your jazz standards like All of Me, Blue Bossa, Impressions, Satin Doll, etc, and then you’ve got your video game standards like Gerudo Valley, Yoshi’s Island Athletic Theme, Megalovania (lol), and Song of Storms! They’re standard repertoire among listeners of video game music, and even more so among video game musicians! Whenever I play with the Super Soul Bros at video game conventions, it’s facilitated by our mutual wide knowledge of video game standard tunes!
Anyway, on to this specific arrangement. Yes, I’ve covered Song of Storms in the past, but it was all the way back in 2013! It’s arguably the first ever “real jazz” cover I did, since it was inspired by the first jazz record I can remember getting my hands on: Herbie Hancock’s The New Standard. In a way, the concept behind Herbie’s The New Standard is really similar to my entire channel… anyway, I’m getting sidetracked again! I wanted to cover this song in 3/4 and tell a bit of a story with it. This arrangement starts off very similar to the original theme, and gradually strays away from it, eventually developing into a whole new groove (but still in 3!) I think the 3/4 beat to this tune is very integral to the tune, so I wanted to preserve it! The random note section of the song is supposed to represent the climax of the storm, you know, the part where all the roofs fly off of houses and cows get thrown into the air. That definitely doesn't happen in-game, but hey, if it's in a movie, I can't argue with that.

If the entirety of Zelda OOT's songs were replaced with insaneintherain's covers, imagine how much different the game would have to be to suit the tone it took on because of the music. Everything would have to change. Link's get-up would go from prehistoric skincloth to sharp 60's attire (rat-pack or beatnik perhaps?), but his hat would already be on the mark, assuming the clothes were rat-pack style (40's or Dick Tracey-style) save for the feather; epona wouldn't be a horse but, rather, a sleek convertible ("the Epona LX. . . "); you would acquire novels and poems rather than, respectively, skulltullas and poes; hyrule would have to become a classy metropolitan center; and Navi would take the form of a Siamese cat or foo-fooey breed of canine. :-)

I'm just guessing, but I think there might be software that can actually hear you play and will turn the page for you when it hears that you got to that part. If not, then I hope someone does make software that does that.

PiercingSight possible, but that would be some sophisticated and expensive software, hard to come by

This song has always been special to me. When I was like 8, I decided to learn this on the piano, but I couldn't get the syncopation between the melody and chords so I got my friend to learn it and we played it as a duet in the school talent show. Can't remember if we won, but I eventually remembered how to play it, chords and all.
