Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told AFP in an exclusive interview he expects Russia to step up its offensive in the northeast and warned Kyiv only has a quarter of the air defences it needs to hold the front line. Russian forces, which had made only moderate advances in recent months, launched an assault in the Kharkiv region on 10 May that has brought them their biggest territorial gains in a year-and-a-half. Zelensky also urged China and countries of the Global South to participate in a peace summit in Switzerland next month and acknowledged his army needed more men to boost the forces' morale.

Kiev has been trying hard ever since this war entered its present form two years ago to drag NATO openly into the war, onto the battlefield. They have tried to achieve it both by direct provocations (their use of the missile that slipped into Poland for example) and propaganda talk - speeches, media, twitter camapigns etc - to push the notion that they are somehow already NATO members and therefore NATO have a moral obligation to stand by them, even if it would mean open war between NATO and Russia,. The other folks in the Ukro leadership haven't exactly been shy about this especially Reznikov (now their London ambassador)..
