Origonal Zelkova serratas do open up like golden elms. These ones must be a selected variety

I have a “Green Vase” Zelkova. It is my favorite tree. It has no bad habits. Unlike maple, trees in our state (central Ohio) the Zelkova does not drop any irritating fruit. It’s roots are deep below my grass. I am about to cut down and remove a Sweetgum tree and replace it with a second Zelkova tree. I like my Zelkova that much. It is a little strange not to have massive roots on a tree that is now 20 plus years old. That said most trees have a bad habit (fruit, branches falling, roots above the ground, etc). The Zelkova in my yard has few bad habits. I do have to pick up branches once in while, but that is minor work for a very good tree. Bottom line, is that I really like my Zelkova tree. So much so that I am about to replace my Sweetgum with a second Zelkova.

I agree, Dr. John Seiler, with your assessment of the zelkova's lack of grace, its tight strict vase shape in comparison to the elms it was originally touted as a replacement for. I think of it as an "industrial strength" tree that, based on this rigid, bulky habit alone, is obviously not native to the eastern U.S. It also is not the greatest friend of anything planted underneath and has a rather aggressive surface-oriented root system. Autumn leaf color can be nice.

This is a very good series and I really enjoy/find useful the tips on identifying species. However, there seems to be an issue with the channel page. There are only five or six videos that show on the channel and I am subscribed. I know there are many more videos but finding them is difficult if they cannot be accessed from the channel page.

So this isn't a real ulmus davidiana var. japonica? cause they both have the same name
