They also always grow almost perfectly straight naturally. So you got a perfect shaped tree with that and the branches. And I’ve seen older ones driving around that can get really big. And tbh their awesome lol

What about root pattern? Roots from trees in the Elm family can cause problems for sidewalks and foundations. What's the minimum planting distance from a house for this tree?

I think I missed this. How far from a foundation should I plant this tree? would it be an OK tree to plant in the backyard for some shade or as a privacy screen?

Planted a couple dozen Green Vase for street trees - one thing you don't mention is that this variety , I'm finding, has a high tendency toward co-dominant leaders - sending up new branches from the main stem equal in vigor to the main stem, with a small crotch angle and lots of bark inclusion - potential for limbs splitting off as the tree grows. It appears to me that these trees need a fair amount of young tree structural pruning to minimize this problem.

These trees are awesome. It took me so long to figure out their name though haha

So the two I got have included bark and 2 to 3 leaders. Should I not worry about pruning?

I have two Zelcovas and the leaves turned reddish and brownish. Now they are all brown and not dropping? Any advise?

Wow, I've been thinking of getting a zelkova! Been looking around NC for one. Any idea where I can get one central NC? Your videos are awesome!!

I purchased mine by mail through the Arbor Day Foundation.

@@thardin69 I thought of that but another friend (former horticulturist) discourages that since you don't know the growth habit. I would rather go to an actual nursery and find the best one. I'm thinking of an October Glory now anyway! I really can't decide.

@@missjennemeg1 Funny. I have one of those too. 29 years old. It gets fire engine red in the late fall. One Maple is enough for my lot. All my neighbors have Maples. My Zelkova is 2 years old, replacing an Ash. It's about 4 foot tall and yep, I'm concerned about it's habit. I'm trying to learn how to prune it. I'm convinced I will have problems if I don't. Best of wishes to you.

@@thardin69 oh yeah, learning to prune is going to be a thing for me too. Whatever I do choose for the particular spot in my yard will have to be well chosen and pruned correctly since it will have a prominent position in my yard and be on full display! Decisions , decisions!!

Hey how old is this tree in the video would you say?

The video was quite informative, enhanced by your knowledge of the tree and your conversational style. QUESTION - Is it normal for this tree to shed multitudes of tiny branches as the leaves come out in Spring? It is shedding!! The little fruit is really quite a nuisance, also, in the early autumn. Is this just the cost of having this beautiful shade tree?

It is a bit of a trash tree. River birches, Chinese elms, and golden raintrees are the same.

+Cathy Brown Thanks. Luckily not in the path. The middle of last week it was suppose to come but that changed. Feel terrible for all the farmers with crops still in the field that are in the path of this thing.

Why would anyone plant one of these. These seed themselves everywhere, and if you knick any of their roots, you have a new tree!
