Poet Ryokan said: "the flower invites the butterfly with no mind, the butterfly comes, the flower opens; the flower opens, the butterfly comes". This no mind is also present in our physical necessities of eating, sleeping and shitting.

This way of no mind, I have read about it in the writing of Takuan Soho. Do not lose sight of the tree for a single leaf. Watch it all, don't try so hard. A spirit of Taoism runs through this. Even the river is busy, is there peace beneath the surface? Or are we enamoured with the shimmers? Do we really see the river?

ah but now we know that is far from the full story. They have now found the flower has a magnetic field opposite to what the bee or butterfly has. The flower creates this field like a love letter to the butterfly or bee. Like a sirens call. Oh the flower is not just sitting there with no mind, it has a mind and a will to attract the butterfly. And when the butterfly lands the pollen actually flies through the air and attaches to the butterfly, almost like an orgasm the pollen springs forth. When the butterfly lands the magnetic field of the flower changes so that other butterflies will not be attracted to it. That butterfly will have pollen stuck to it and then the next flower may get pollenated by the butterfly, or bee. And so in that way the flower guarantees it will keep procreating on through the centuries as long as it can attract the bees and the butterflies!
@frombeyond59 ай бұрын
@@jn846first what is mind and what is no mind? It is important to put Ryokan's words in the context of zen Buddhist philosophy/worldview. Mind here refers to the constant thinking process which is not always beneficial for our "will to life" or what Spinoza called "the conatus": the fundamental drive of every entity to persist in its own being. This magnetic field of the flower you just described is the scientific explanation of this drive. Same thing, different language. The flower and the bee are interconnected, their will to life guides them towards each other. Without overthinking or sabotaging the process. I think this is the sense in which Ryokan's words could be understood.

in practice he is saying that the human being should regress to the state of an involuted animal... it is not at all because the human being is a grandiose being in all his mental complexity and it is not at all true that desire causes suffering, suffering arises from the lack of knowledge rooted in the ego of the human being... therefore it is necessary to know how to stop and detach oneself from one's own sense of ego or at least manage it in the best possible way... once the human being is deprived of desire it becomes a bad thing inexpressive... the true purpose of life is not to annihilate oneself in it but to become conscientiously eternal... now I understand why Buddhism born in India is present throughout Asia, even in India itself 😅

It’s impossible for a student to accurately judge whether anyone is awakened or not. That includes themselves. That being said the teacher clicks or they don’t. I get actually get more from my fellow sangha members than I do the teachers. The teacher is there to play a role, and a good student will apply themselves diligently regardless of the attainment of the teacher. I see it as a path that one travels their entire life. Stepping on and off the path is actually almost necessary because over decades we go through stages and sometimes we must strike out on our own, even if we come back later, perhaps even in another community.

I would add, connection with God. Old age is the point where a person is going to leave this world. The greatest gift God can give a person towards the end of their life is the realization that it's only about me and you. That's it. Your children that you though you could rely on, they're disgusted by you. Your body which you thought was you, it's not you. Your money doesn't mean anything. You're almost trapped inside of your mind. The mind is still there on the inside even though there's not a lot going on on the outside. What's a person do on the inside? Crate that connection with God. Creating intimacy. The greatest gift you can give someone before they leave this world is tell them, look, don't make any mistakes anymore. That third dimension that you've ignored throughout your life, and never really spent time to nourish, that connection with me, now I'm giving you that opportunity, because everything else is gone. It's just you and me. That's what's happening. What people on the outside can't see. that's what's being created on the inside. The most profound moment in life is the moment just before you die. Do you know why? Because that moment just before you die, you have the total realization that, "God, it's just about me and you and nothing else" Everything else was an illusion.

If you have studied the cultures and religions of the world you'll find out inevitably that they're all talking about the same thing. This energetic love that moves the stars, galaxies, the thing that makes you digests your food, the thing that makes you blink and hear and eat and sleep and shit and so on, this great happening is God. Or Allah, or Brahma, or the Dao/Tao, whatever name you have from your background, they're all talking about the same thing. If you're fortunate, and wake up one day and discover that you are this great energy, HOORAY. You've finally woken up to the fact that you are a Zen Master, or a son of God. That you are Allah, or that you are the Dao, it doesn't matter what name you try to put on it, you can't be named. 😏 Now if you really understand that you are that, you ought to discover that everybody else is too. Jesus Christ, early in his life had this amazing consciousness experience. He tried to wake people up to the fact that they are too. Of course, people in those times were absolutely shocked and thought he was some sort of unnatural man, who performs miracles, is basically immortal and so on. Of course he is. Of course you are. All of us will die one day and leave not even a spec of dust behind, we can digest food, do millions of functions around our body every single millisecond without thinking about it, isn't this all a miracle? Look around you, were in space. Space is infinite, therefore any position from which you look at space could be said to be the center. You are the central point of the entire universe. And if you discover that you are the universe, you've already abolished all the problems that would arise if you felt like you were a stranger and afraid in a world it never made. What's even greater is that you don't need to know any of this, just like you don't need to know how to breathe to be able to do it. You don't need someone to teach you you're a master of life, because you are anyhow. But if you want a master, sure. But it's always more fun to find something out for yourself. 😂🤫

So funny, it's hysterical to think that all of life and the many actions we take that we think have meaning all boils down to eating, sleeping, and shitting. At least according to some Zen Masters. I laughed out loud because of the irony how we think everything little thing we do like amassing a fortune or having a big family has so much meaning, but in the end it really means nothing at all. But then on the other hand even eating, sleeping, and taking a huge dump can be done with mindfulness. For someone following a mindfulness path mindfulness is the essential state of being. No matter what you do - eating, sleeping, pooping included! It's kind of the Yang to the Yin. No mind / mindfulness! Which do you prefer?
