Thanks for the video, it helped me remember some of the form that I haven't practiced in years. I have a question, though: in my experience with the Sōtō school in Brazil, we usually sat facing the wall; is that something you also do? Thanks 🙏

Zen Meditation's most important base is discipline. Discipline gives you perception of organization. Organized mind is step closer to achieving peace. Zen Meditation might feel too much in the beginning. But, just keep practicing without judging yourself. There is no right and wrong in meditation. Zen is the most realistic method of meditation in the modern world. Zen Buddhism has a long history connected China, Korea, Japan & All other buddhist countries. To Practice Zen Buddhism, I guess you begin with start going to some Zen Buddhist Meditation Center in your area. I guess it would be more useful for you to see the Master face to face, than getting answer here. I hope, this info is useful to you. Good Luck to your spiritual journey. Peace

Yeah, people fed up with showy religions are gonna feel disappointed to see more empty showiness being imposed on Buddhist practitioners. For people like us, it evokes the dread that we'll once again be among people who are expert at all the external signals of spirituality, but none of the internal.

It's all very Regimented.. Is this what Buddha thought was needed? It looks like further suffering. More things to do that's not nessessary. Please don't get me wrong. I thought the idea is to keep it simple, pure and uncluttered. Help me work this out

I am a great believer in meditation , and i would really like to develope an interest in Zen . However for me all this formallity is exactly what meditation is not ?.....i have no issue wth so much of it but turning it into a scripted formal " religion " baffles me .

I'm by no means an experienced practitioner, but what I've learned after a while is that most of those formalities are very practical and actually help you meditate. So, what I'll share here are purely my experiences. It supports you getting into a mindful mindset, to begin with. As you focus on the precision of the movements, your mind - and body - slowly starts calming down and occupies itself of that very moment, making it easier to finally sit. I usually had the feeling of leaving most of those persistent thoughts I had over my day as a lay person living in the world by the door of the meditation room. They could definitely return during zazen - which is fine! - but that little ceremony helped me be more present. But also, most of those things are very practical. For example, the sitting posture is meant to make it more comfortable and healthy over a longer period. The eyes gazing at 45° naturally get to a semi-closed position - closed enough to not need a lot of blinking, not too close so you'd fall asleep. Even the "turn clockwise" thing has a very practical reason: that way, people don't bump into each other. Again, those are my impressions. What I've felt practicing with the Sōtō Zen school in the West was a very welcoming attitude and a mostly pragmatic approach to things. Nothing ever required me any leap of faith or irrational behaviour, and even some of the things that are like they are due to tradition (being a Japanese branch of Zen, that's even culturally expected), they end up having a purpose on how the practice is conducted. Hope that helps 🙏

If your practice is so bad that you're distracted by what someone wears, then you are truly off the path. This is control BS, and in Zen, we stress that we have no control outside of our own selves. Until we just let go and let things be, we will constantly suffer, and also cause others to suffer. We can learn who and what we are no other way. This video is like anti Zen. Really a bad instructor/teacher here.

I would never fit in there. I'd never be able to follow all the meticulous rules and the presenter would be nagging at me all the time xD I didn't think Buddhism was about following meticulous rules.

Too much focus on the form. The essense of Zen is all missing. Its simple - just be here and breathe!

Why put "Zen" in the title? This should be entitled "Dogma" - instead you slander the name of Zen. Don't you realise that the moment you turn your mind towards the way it immediately moves further away from you. Being trapped by methods and forms and a dogmatic understanding of the approach to zazen you are misleading the people - you wild fox spirit, any one seeking the way would do well to skip watching this - failing that try to forget this chattering ghost...

incorrect use of the word Dogma. Dogma - "a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true." in other words, belief. there is nothing here to believe?
