I think a lot of animals are very Good at meditating. Humans would be to without training if our eviroment and life-styles were a lot more like what we are evolved for. Since that wont happen anytime soon meditation is a good way to "unnaturaly" " and in a planned way achieve a state of mind that spontanosley was triggered several times most days when we were hunter-gatherers.

The master has explained a very helpful concept in a simple way. I have experienced it many times in my meditation. When I sit in meditation with a "goal", my meditation becomes tough. But when I "just sit" without any expectation, my mind become very calm and peaceful. Wonderfully explained :)

@@Kaspen82 We have a "goal" whenever we "do" anything at all. That's the nature of action. Including when we sit down to meditate. What the op is saying is that until the goal oriented activity stops, he cannot enjoy sitting there. Once he relaxes, and forgets about the goal, a state of meditation results. You can observe this for your self. There is no possibility of "fooling" one's self, as the first commenter seems to be claiming.

Actually, this type of meditation is way more appealing to me! Since I have been putting too many expectations on myself all my life, all I want from meditation is a way to relax, find peace of mind and process life in a calmer, less impulsive way. I have found that just sitting in silence, with my own thoughts, whenever I can, not purposefully meditating, I derive many meaningful insights from just being, and I always come out calm and with a clear mind, that is able to focus on the moment instead of overthinking every single little thing. Also, science has shown that it is good for your memory and brain function in general, mainly because it relieves stress and aids grey matter. So I am going to start meditating soon, I can’t wait for it!

One day 3 monks and there teacher were sitting a field meditating. A flag was flapping in the wind. The first monk, newest to the order, said "the flag is flapping" Second monk, also second in seniority, said "wind is flapping". The third monk, longest student of the teacher, said "mind is flapping" . Both the younger monks sighed in agreement and looked to the teacher for explanation. Zazen is the simplest practice and because of that the mind finds it the most difficult. The mind always wants something complicated so it asks for techniques and complicated stuff but zazen just sitting boggles the mind and it makes up a million excuses to do other things to get out of it. Making it complicated. For me the desire for zazen came only after years of many other spiritual practices and eventually it led to the most simple one of all. Now I just sit and by the end of the sitting I feel so peaceful, my heart feels cleansed and open and free. Those are just the experiences or effects of it but there is no goal. Just sit- because that is the goal in itself. When we do different activities there seem to be some goal to attain, but this is doing the activity for its own sake. Just sitting is the joy and surrendering any fruits of this action

I always viewed zazen as seeing the irony of live as it is. We search for the meaning of our life (enlightement) to refuse our everyday reality. Zazen teaches us that the meaning of life is the everyday reality. Probably doesn't sum it up accurately, but that stuff is so confusing by being that simple that you just can't get it right by thinking about it. So stop thinking. Just sit.

Two points: 1. his English is better than any Japanese person I’ve ever seen online. English in Japan is taught as an entirely academic subject; you pass your grammar exams and that’s it- finished. The result is that the overwhelming majority of Japanese students cannot speak a single sentence of conversational English. So to see a Japanese person with this level of fluency is really impressive. 2. It’s fascinating to see the same reality over and over again with Zen Buddhism: western “teachers” of it seem to be austere and miserable, whereas native Japanese masters and ordinary monks of Zen have a natural warmth and peace about them. This isn’t unique to Zen though; converts to any religion are typically austere and intransigent- same reality with converts to Catholicism, Judaism, etc etc...like they feel they have to be more orthodox than anybody else. And, frankly, they normally end up being a pest. It’s very hard to get along with converts in my own faith (Catholic) because they often lack the ingrained and natural attitudes that come from simply being *born* into a faith background. To those joining another faith I would offer this simple advice: calm down. It’s not a race and there’s no need to lecture others or wear special clothes or advertise your faith. Let it grow slowly. God/the universe (whichever you’re oriented toward) isn’t in a rush and you don’t need to be either. Breathe. Slow down. You don’t need to run after God- just sit in his presence...same thing with Zen meditation...just be.

"While resting free of anything to imagine, like space, do not be distracted for even one instant. The one who trains like that can truly be called a ‘space yogi’. A yogi is an individual who connects with that which is naturally so. Space means that which always is. Remain without imagining anything at all, not meditating on anything. Once you start to meditate on space, it becomes an imitation. Simply allow the space to not wander. Remain undistracted. There is no impetus for any thoughts to reoccur. A thought is a mental way of formulating something - in other words, our attention formulates a thought. The thought doesn’t come from anywhere else. If we don’t think, where would a thought come from? In the basic space that is unimaginable, remain undistractedly. Let your indescribable awareness remain undistracted in the naked state of basic space. It doesn’t have to be imagined, because this basic space that is utterly naked is our own nature already. You don’t have to imagine that this is so" .... Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche

There is the age old question........If a tree falls in a forest at such a range that nobody can hear it fall...does it make a noise?

Actually, it is possible that Dogen didn't understood the deeper meaning of that koan with the bell and wind. That koan is not for understanding with the mind, of course, but for producing a spontaneous awakening. The answer of the student, that the sound is produced in the mind, means something much deeper. The sound, the bell, the wind, and the entire universe (the manifestation) appear in consciousness, in the waking state. But this consciousness of who is it? To whom it belongs? .... All is appearing in the consciousness of an impersonal and misterious witness. Whithout this, there is no universe, no totality, not even the concept of nothing. But can this awareness-witness be oher than youself, can it be different than yourself, the true self?.... So, the koan, brings the attention instantly, in a so subtle place, where is introducing for the first time, the key to the secret of this universe. Oh, but this are just concepts...

I didn't know ones life ought to be meaningful. I just live my Ife with my human attachments, desires and acceptance of limitations. To me, to strive for meaning, is to be not fine right here and now.

I didn't know about this. I practiced doing nothing because my life asked for it. It's incredible how many people think they are able to do what their dogs do. So many people who can't sit confortably by their hated one can't imagine what it is to sit with themselves for just an hour. Even people who can't simply sit by their loved ones, they check the phone or say things just to not simply sit but they think they are not more disabled than their dog. How will I feel I can be a good influence if when I sit by myself I want to escape myself? Not mooving a muscle, being awake, for hours is lifeunchanging. It has no reward, but you spend that time not escaping these world rules, there's no reward for being alife. Rewards don't disapear from life surface when people die.

I think this concept is easier to understand than being made out in this video. It's basically just "trust the process". You don't sit there expecting anything to happen acutely, but you do know that if you continue to do it, eventually you will see a change in your life. At least, with our modern understanding, we know this to be the case.

The fact you believe 'eventually you will see a change' shows you don't get it. It is about now, as it is, now and always now. With no expectation that it will be better in the future if you keep plugging away. That is just another desire.

The whole point of mantra is to achieve this same "nothing" state. You fill your mind with so much mantra so many times the words lose meaning and the sound fades away but you never stop the mantra. In this way the mind is focused solely on one thing and you naturally disassociate yourself from the minds endless repetitions. Eventually the mind moves farther and farther away - getting quieter and quieter - until your are finally left with complete peace and emptiness. Every thought that is not the mantra is watched and then the mantra is repeated to recapture the mind. Rinse and repeat.

at the beginning must be strong motivation, why me practicing zazen, and this purpose is an enlightenment, what Buddha reached from the wish to find the truth. only later a mind can to understand, that no reasons, to seek of something more, than life of "just". zazen is not good and not bad, it is like a stone, you use for knocking at the doors, when doors- an enlightenment, are open, you through it out, because that your mind becomes empty, nowhere to find, without a thinking about a wind, mind, who right or not, or nothing.. if no an understanding-" no death, no life", your seating is for nothing, still.

I grew up in a small beach town in the Philippines, ppl there just sit under a tree bliss out of their mind. I actually felt this too. Ppl in the city call us ‘Juan tamad’ which means lazy John lol they call us lazy and bums. Ppl there does not believe in science bc they already felt the answer. But they are prone to abuse when capitalism walks in, just like what happen in Tibet.

well said... my most productive meditation is unplanned, spontaneous . For example after little lsd and going for a bike ride to the secret forest back to same pine tree for a meditation session , maybe it is cheating, really its most likely my undying curiosity for life. it certainly helped me go much deeper with my breathing I discovered we have lungs in our brain after this meditation method . I've only just started opening them up. Felt like I could breathe through the top of my head. Many days later I feel my ego or soul ? keep saying go back , go back. But I'm in no rush. Or is it my ego saying no rush ? . hahaha Structured and planned meditation is supposed to be painful, to release karma. I once knew a guy who would stretch and yoga for hours in order to sit in full lotus. fk that i just go straight into it . If you struggle with meditation you will benefit from it the most ; I agree from book beginners mind.

A Daoist master said to his student: The wise man does not argue, he who argues is not wise. The student disagreed, and the two of them got into an argument. After a while, the student pointed out that the wise master himself was now arguing. The master disagreed, so the two of them started arguing about whether the master was arguing. Eventually, the master admitted that he had indeed been arguing. "But you just said the wise man does not argue!" the student exclaimed. "You're right", the master said, "I suppose I just felt more like arguing than being wise".
