Zenith Defy Skyline VS Rolex Datejust - Stainless Steel Everyday Watches

I own this Zenith and have a couple of the latest Rolex Subs, it’s a very different watch obviously to the Subs, both Subs are incredibly accurate but so is the Zenith, even though you can’t accurately tell what it is to the second because of the fast seconds hand it still ticks over to the minute with incredible accuracy so doesn’t effect it’s performance at all, I am lead to believe that the El Primero movement is one of the most accurate in the industry, I think COSC certification isn’t as important as people think. Also the bracelet and general finishing on the Zenith are on another level to the Rolex , it feels like that of holy trinity standard plus the quick release system is far superior, display case back shows a stunning movement and beautiful dial with tiny Zenith stars covering it , I know why it makes more sense to choose the Rolex , resale and popularity etc but honestly I think the Zenith is a much nicer , better made , less common , and much more interesting watch than most Rolex’s let alone than this Datejust. Plus Tim has got the guarantee wrong , if you register the Zenith on the website you get additional warranty making it 5 years which is the same as Rolex.

I have the Zenith too, have had Rolex in the past, the Zenith is on another level, and that's not even discussing the Zenith EL P movement. In the luxury watch segment, the Zenith is a great price.

Zenith is by far the more interesting watch and is usually compared to a Royal Oak at a fraction of the price if you are buying the Rolex for better resale that’s a different story in terms of the extra power reserve 60 hours for the Zenith is great considering it’s a fast beat movement but if you are buying watches for a slightly better power reserve then you’ll be looking at Baume et Mercier and 5 days at a third of the price which is probably one of the most underrated manufacturer’s which share their movements with IWC either way you will not be disappointed with any.

I have both. The Datejust 41 is actually only 39mm. I have no idea why they call it 41.

I'd pick the Zenith all day, every day, IF it just had a proper running seconds (either centre seconds like the "standard" Defy, or using the subdial), instead of that completely useless 10-second subdial. The Datejust, therefore, wins by default, even if I hate the Cyclops date and prefer almost everything else about the Defy (in other words, I'd take an Aqua Terra or Santos over either). One detail that might be worth mentioning about 904L steel in future is that it's a little tougher and more corrosion resistant than 316L due to a higher nickel content, to the point it's not actually wearable by people with severe nickel allergies (unlike 316L). Doesn't matter to me personally, but something that people buying Rolex or GP Laureato should be aware of.

Actually 904 (particularly the Rolex variety) tends to be a little softer as compared to regular 316, but because of that it can be refinished easily. That’s one big reason Rolex has generally shifted to simpler case shapes (dropping of bevel on the side etc) since it’s adoption by them

Resell higher for rolex, yes, only if you can get the watch for retail price without a waiting list. 😅 And I think the zenith defy is bi-directional date adjust. The earlier model of defy classic already is bi-direction in date adjustment so I assume the new one should be also 🤔

My wife has Rolex, I have Zenith. When you have theis Zenith on your wrist for a while, thi second hand actually becomes very attractive and addictive. When I put on other watch on my wrist, I miss the crazy seccond hand from Zinith... LOL.

This is a typical Rolex casing yet still remains with 4 sharp edges at the end of the lugs ! But the polishing and color certainly beat the hell of those available on market of early years !!

Big fan of the zenith but I think you broke it down in a way that gives it due credit…but shows the comparable Rolex is (unfortunately) ahead in many important regards. In a number of ways, the prior defy might have been a better comparison (even though I prefer the skyline’s styling). Also learned a new pronunciation of defy, so there’s that 😂 Great work 👍🙏

I wouldn’t worry much about accuracy. I own an El Primero, it’s easily the most accurate watch I own. It’s more accurate than my Metas certified Omega, probably by a good margin. Both are accurate. No idea how common it is to get such a well regulated Zenith, mine was bought pre owned. On forums, I don’t recall complaints concerning accuracy.

Zenith has some amazing cases right now. And I'm loving these three hand hi-beat releases. Rolex is so dull. And when I see someone wearing one, which is too often, I think they're making a statement about wealth, and not necessarily a fan of watches or horology. Granted, at that $8k-$9k range, I'd be looking at a Blancpain FF Bathyscaphe. Slightly below, I'd look at the new Zenith Pilot in steel.

While I don’t love the brand baggage in most situations, the watches are well done. Thin, super tough, parts available well past when we all expire and a timeless design. Personally, I’ve never had someone remark on any of my watches, even Rolex, in public.
