Switch games are overpriced. Indies on Vita were £8 or £12 and I used to buy every interesting release and most others on sale. On Switch indies are £26 and on sale are over £20 for the big names like cult of the lamb. It's too expensive. Retail switch games are much too expensive too. No players choice range.
@arostwocentsАй бұрын
I have bought less than 5 full price Indies on Switch as they are just way too greedy. If they sold them for £10 full price they would sell WAY more. Nintendo ended sales below 70p so I stopped buying cheap games. I used to buy all games that were sub 20p. Why not just make it so any game below £1 cannot be in the top sales chart after the sale period ends? Instead of fixing the supposed problem in a pro player way, they are just greedy and do it in a way that actually costs them tonnes of sales.

@@arostwocentsWell that's not really Nintendo's fault. Gaming is technology, and technology's price increases quickly while innovation doesn't increase as fast. Sony and Xbox and even Steam are just as guilty of this. Their games are just as expensive as Nintendo's. All Nintendo does is choose the price of their own games. The indies decide their own prices, and so does Nintendo for their own games. So to me, it's not an in issue with Nintendo, it's an issue with the gaming industry as a whole. Nintendo is just trying its best to deal with it. And besides, we've had these prices ever since the switch launched in 2017, thats 7 years. By now, i'm just used to it.

Greed isn't a bonus, it's the main and most important factor. Capitalism encourages businesses to minimize costs and maximize returns, often at the expense of originality and innovation. However, this isn't always the case with PC. PC often supports more innovative and ambitious titles. Star Citizen and the upcoming GTA 6 are expected to fully leverage the power of modern PCs. Already released titles like Baldur's Gate 3 show how the PC can handle complex, richly detailed worlds. Other games like Cyberpunk 2077, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and The Witcher 3 continue to push the boundaries of what's possible. This demonstrates that, at least in the PC space, there's still room for creativity and technological advancement despite the pressures of capitalism.

@@PhazonBlaxor Probably because it isn’t considered one. The Switch, while thriving this generation, came out in the middle of the 8th gen; and hardware wise, is barely more powerful than it’s Predecessor, the Wii U, and still less than the Xbox One. It’s not much different in concept to say the the PS4 pro and Xbox One X, which were mid-gen refreshes that offer a bit more to their original, but not too much to consider them technical leaps. The Gap is way too wide to consider the Switch along side the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

@@PhazonBlaxor What’s also fun is that you haven’t refuted a point I’ve made. If by definition, you mean that it’s the next piece of Nintendo hardware, then no; companies releasing new hardware within a generation isn’t a new occurrence (Sega and Atari have done it long ago). It’s only fact if it’s objectively and uncontestedly true. But the thing is, the Switch is rather controversial in this aspect, since people still aren’t in agreement where The Switch falls into In terms of hardware generation, so it can’t be fact. What is fact, is that the Switch came in the middle of the previous generation, just before Sony and Microsoft released the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X respectively. Another thing that is fact is how Nintendo tries to effectively erase the Wii U by porting over many of its games to the Switch, and heavily market them for the Switch; especially since many people still don’t know of the Wii U’s existence as Nintendo’s previous home console. It as if to say, the Switch was the console Nintendo wanted to sell us all along that generation, without any baggage that led to that. Otherwise, I would’ve agreed with you if the following were true: A) If Sony and Xbox never made the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, and just made the Next generation hardware instead of mid-gen upgrades; releasing them around 2018-2019. B) Nintendo released it way later just before the PS5 and Xbox Series X in around 2019, and that it was just as capable as the Vanilla Xbox One and PS4. If you’re interested, I recommend Adam Koralik’s video on the subject of What Generation the Nintendo Switch is in. He touched on it a lot more and covers the semantics of the term too.

@@warmikeit was always the killer feature over a PC along with plug&play mainly because of form factor. Saying this as hardcore pc gamer these two things were the only reasons I ever respected consoles for. The luxury of meeting up at the penthouse with the boys with a PS4 launching FIFA in a matter of minutes. Sure we could do that on a PC with even better graphics but the hustle was just not worth it.

@@warmike It just ain't the same. Dual keyboard/mouse support doesn't work 90% of the time without specialized software, and using gamepads can work, but a lot of the games people want to play split-screen with their friends on PC is just easier to do over internet, since it doesn't require a subscription service. There's something magical about playing Mario Party or Kart in the same room, or playing split-screen Halo. My fondest memories of 7th gen were me, my cousin, and my uncle all playing Halo Reach for the first time on 3 player split-screen using a "small" CRT having to prop the Xbox a certain way to get the disc drive to read discs. Modern consoles have lost that split screen (mostly due to the games not supporting them, not the consoles themselves in all fairness).

Most, if not every, clever game mechanics we got in the past were due to hardware limitations and toughtfull ways to squeeze the maximum fun out of it. As a professionnal chef and a game dev hobbyist I can assure you that's its far easier to work around stricts ressources. Give me every ingredients in the world to make a dish and I may stumble, but give me 5 and I will optimize it to death. Same in gamedev, the best innovations in recent years came from gamejams. Why? Micro-transactions- I’m not paying you to play a game that I just paid $70-$110 for. I’m also not paying for that experience to be enhanced. 3.) Ignoring good ports and remasters for terrible and/or unnecessary ones- To this day, I don’t understand why GTA 5 has been sold on 3 different console generations, but we have yet to get a GTA 4 Port. And then Rockstar ruined the trilogy remaster😑 4.) Games that aren’t supported by reverse compatibility- This is mainly a PS5 issue, but you can’t tell me that my $600 paperweight isn’t optimized and advanced enough to run games that they PS3 and PS2 could… bffr. 5.) I distinctly remember both when NSO came and brought the "expansion pack" version, when anyone complained about it we got told "Xbox and PlayStation have been doing this forever why are you upset now, it's normal". That's the problem, we are upset about that too, it shouldn't be normal to pay hundreds of dollars for a console, controllers, at least one game which are commonly prices between $30-70 now, and then pay a recurring subscription to be able to play online.
@ottom.30945 ай бұрын
Congrats on thinking for yourself, and not following the majority. You're absolutely right - no reason to own the consoles - pay their online membership - lose backwards capability - and deal with their corporate greed. PC gaming + switch (2) is the move. Ps5 games are coming to PC anyways. So why own a ps5 - unless you really really wanna play that (1) naughty dog game that may release in this generation. My thing is - if you can wait 10 years for naughty dog's game - a few extra months for a BETTER version on PC is better.

To be able to play games on PC would cost you every 2 years at least a graphic card upgrade which is usually the most expensive upgrade and the cost of a good one is similar to the whole console. At first I thought my config was the issue. Built an entirely new PC with crazy specs, still happens. Lately I had to refund Hogwart Legacy for instance because it's a stutter fest. But basically 90% of game I played had this issue, all Unreal Engine games too (PSO Cache) . Only older games without asset streaming or simple graphics don't have those issues. I think most people don't realise that yet because there aren't many that play in >60 fps and competitive gaming don't have those problems because they actually solve it by compiling shaders at the start. The funny part is the Steam Deck is sometime smoother than PC gaming because they share the caches.

@TallTaleGael precisely this. Got a PS5 to play with some of my friend while still having the PS4 laying around. The only good thing of it is literally the features of the controller - the bad thing is just how cheap it feels, for the console it just feels laggy and that's about it - the whole design in it (including the connection issues on voice compared to PS4) feels absolutely useless and like the devs on it didn't really want to do it - had that thing for like 3 months before I sold it off on ebay again. There's just no point in a console that does everything worse than the previous one somehow all while you gotta pay monthly/yearly just to play online - for the money the subscription adds to the bill you may as well buy a new high end PC every time a new console gen arrives - and on that one you're not only stuck with the few games available but also can choose what to play with and entirely customize the controller layout - which rather brings up the question why consoles have such a hard time to allow for that.

I got Series S because a gaming PC has been a major expense in 2021, and even now still is. Why to replace a laptop that can do everything except for any serious gaming, if you have Series S for comfortable gaming? At least that was me a year ago. Now? I am considering milking out of the Series S and never returning to gaming once it dies. The issue isn't the price of the gaming PC. It's immediate affordability and immediate replacement of parts, should something happen... What is the fault of the adequate wages. I am from Poland and the majority of Poles do not earn more than 60% of the national average wage.
@mugthemagpie30015 ай бұрын
@@Unknown_Genius disagreed on the sub model being equal to price of the gaming PC. I have been using Xbox One then Series S for the past 8 years and ONLY RECENTLY I have hit the price of the gaming PC that would be capable of running modern games. After almost a decade of console gaming. But keep in mind I am from the EU, so not only are all our electronics more expensive but also they slap 23% tax on top, what already is bad for Polish realities where a small group of people earn the average national wage. I mean I could get a gaming PC. But that would mean dropping socializing and any other hobby. Are video games worth such a sacrifice? Absolutely not.
@Unknown_Genius5 ай бұрын
@@mugthemagpie3001 "for the past 8 years and ONLY RECENTLY I have hit the price of the gaming PC that would be capable of running modern games" that's absolutely wrong. Budget gaming PCs in the range of 500-700€ (obviously EU prices because... Euro) can run modern games (obviously not at the highest settings 4k 144fps) without that much trouble, what you get after those 8 years is a PC that got higher specs than your console had - hence why I said that you can easily upgrade to a new higher end PC every console gen. The sub costs solely exist to turn a profit on the console (you essentially end up with a higher price than the hardware is worth after years of using it). I honestly left my console social structures behind a decade ago honestly. Mainly because It didn't feel right to be confined in a space with so little to choose from - Videogames are my hobby to waste some time and have a good experience (which on console is highly limited), for socializing I go outside - not to mention that the hard headed people I knew back then did treat switching to another console or to pc as "treason" so naturally I cut those ties without a second doubt.

I can go sit at any fire, introduce myself, join in I'm not stepping on anyone's toes, I'm not being rude We all have a right to exist in the same place together But ordinary society, there aren't camp fires you can wander up to and play music around Though I think a community of people hanging out around a camp fire is probably one of the most basic and foundational parts of human society and culture But we exist in conditions that do not allow people to congregate around communal camp fires because of the erosion of communal spaces, distrust, being isolated on our individual versions of the internet, trapped within the feed of digital content that is curated to each individual In ordinary society we can't find the time or space to just laze around and play guitar under a tree, there's always something more important, or more attention grabbing to get lost in instead Hanging out with friends isn't as easy as wandering over to their campsite, plonking down in a chair and getting a cup of tea In atomised society we've got all these barriers, fences, property, jobs, busy lives, privacy, separation, sitting in our own houses, in our own cars, barely getting any contact with another human that isn't constrained by the social roles we are made to follow It's hard to send a facebook message to an old best friend you haven't spoken to in 5-10 years We're habitually being closed off to others rather than open, and I think that is why our society is so atomised Because nearly everything about our society predisposes us to be disconnected, rather than connected It's a design choice for our economies, communities and cities, rather than a conscious personal choice made by millions individuals to be distant

@@zaraizabella it sounds like you found something where you fit in completely when at the folk festival. I wish I had ever found that place I totally fit in in life. I unfortunately have never found it yet. All of the things you mentioned may be part of what has us disconnected. And it may not even be a conscious decision for society to be disconnected the way it is. But as sentient beings, we have the individual power to not participate in this process. And a large portion of society has decided it is happy just floating through life, doing the motions. Rather than making any waves or trying to think for themselves. That is what bothers me. We have more tools today than we have ever had in our history to communicate. And yet, we choose to communicate, in many ways, less than we ever have. It makes no sense to me. I understand the power of the system over society though. I deal with this battle, even in my own family. Rarely hearing from some of my own relatives. I have come to realize I am the one that sticks out today. And is expecting things we no longer have. But this is the way I was built. I am always going to yearn for days where we get back to the importance of family, communication and being able to jam in person on a regular basis with other people. 🤷♂️

Wow! Those last two minutes of videos of people excited about their consoles made me feel so nostalgic. Gaming rarely feels like that anymore and it’s the biggest this industry has ever been. I miss feeling hyped and excited about playing a game.

I first started playing Mario on a Nintendo and a huge crt tv. Then on Amiga 500. Actually had a go on a virtual PC system in London in the 1990s. Prior to that was ping pong in rich guys lounge rooms and in malls a driving game... mid 1970s....that looked like driving at night while tripping. Space Invaders appeared. Then had 166mhz IBM PC. Playing Doom online with dial up. Mind blowing. Then a PS1 playing Lara Croft. Anyway I bought a PS3 and played GTA3 on a 1080p tv but abandoned the plot and just loaded weapon cheats and drove down crowded pavements. I still have hibernating in a cupboard. So eventually I recently bought a P$5. To play on a huge 4k tv. Well now I am experiencing all the issues, all the updates, all the reruns and all the difficulty just playing the complicated games with the new hand piece. The new console is gathering dust and I still need to pay it off from the Telecom company.

It's not just consoles. It's everything. This society has stalled and it's about to collapse because corporations have overgrown way past their limit, corporate greed is ruling our world, and the worst part is that there is absolutely no innovation whatsoever. Remember when you bought your PS3/360 after playing with your PS2/XBOX? Remember how mind blowing it was to experience the next generation? And then people upgraded to PS4/ONE and they were disappointed. And then PS5/Series X came and nobody bought them at the time, first because it was impossible due to waiting lists and then because they had no games you couldn't play on the previous generations. And the graphics aren't even that impressive for their price anyways. Simply put, they don't have anything else to offer anymore, they stalled. The feeling of advancement and accomplishment from the 2000s is long gone.

@@emilevankrieken6161Perhaps, probably so. But I still love gaming, love movies. It’s just seems obvious there’s a lack of soul in both those industry’s. The 2010’s and 2020’s have something missing in them that the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, had. No innovation, no risk taking, afraid to offend people, etc, etc.

@@PhyrexJ Quote the entire phrase. "nobody bought them **at the time**". Suddenly it makes a lot more sense, in a context where you needed to join a months-long waiting list to get one, if you got one at all, just to play one or two games.

Nintendo's strategy is looking very smart now
@KJ4VGA5 ай бұрын
Pretty depressing that their strategy basically boils down to "make some damn games" and other companies seem to struggle with that.

Yes keep rehasing remakes and cartoony games on hardware that can barely run it.

Nintendo hasn't done much but bank on nostalgia while using aging hardware to do it. Rune factory 5 runs like absolute garbage on the Switch and it's a farming rpg. Scarlet and violet at launch... First party Nintendo seems to run alright because they made the console yet all they do is make a 2d or 3d Mario game and call it a day. Tears of the kingdom was just more Breath of the Wild with building tools that somehow made exploration bland. And has even more technical problems causing frame drops and what not.

@@wdf70 i disagree completely, their strategy is rely on creativity on video games rather than specs, their device isnt the strongest thing but its because it can do something that no one else can, which is switching between home console and handheld They release a lot of ports yes but they also release more unique titles than all of the competitors (and with way higher quality)

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a nephew a few days ago. We were talking the games we played: he played EAFC, Fortnite and COD on his PS5. I said I played Lego2KDrive, Cyberpunk 2077 and Transformers Devastation on my PS4. I was barely done talking about the fun I had in the singleplayer experiences in those games and he had the look on his face, the look in his eyes of regret and lost nostalgia. Then we talked about the Nintendo Switch and he visibly regretted saying it was just for children when another nephew was having great fun playing Pokémon: Sword and we talked about Legends: Arceus and Scarlet. We got to talking about the Arcade-racer boom during the PS3 and XBox 360 era, games they fell in love with as fundamental experiences that drove their passion for the games we play now. It became clear to me that gaming has evolved in a nasty direction, full of 'surprise mechanics' and P2W $70,- games. The very last time anyone in my family had any genuine 'laugh out loud' fun with gaming was when we played Mario kart 8 and Burnout Paradise together in one room.

Funny but not how Nintendo isn’t part of this conversation. The most consistent gaming company, loyal to its customers and keeps its nostalgia. Nintendo is the Toyota of gaming while the other guys are just expensive foreign luxury car crap. Many cool things to offer but the core things that matter causing it to be not worth it in the end.
