I've been living with my Ether CX for over 4 months now Y agree with everything you've said! My favorite configuration is with the black felt pads. They warm up the sound a bit, keep the bass & upper frequencies. I found your configuration to rob too much air from the upper frequencies. What has surprised me the most is that they have continued to get better with time. I'm now approaching ~350 hours & in the last 30, what I thought was their only weak area for me (dynamics) has improved considerably.

My first Ether CX had seriously mismatched cups and fine scratches on one side and Massdrop happily exchanged it for another pair which also had mismatched cups and fine scratches, but they were lighter than the first one. I polished the cups with some car polish and that mostly took care of the scratches and I can live with mismatched grain pattern. It seems like they may have lowered their cosmetic standards to hit this price point because they certainly don't seem to have skimped when it comes to sound (I love them!)

What I found this headset to be really really good at doing, is movies. I hook mine up with a gsx-1000 (HRTF 7.1) and a sp200. And dammmn! Gsx1000 expanded the virtual sound stage just enough to create a really great (still a bit too intimate) THX theater experiences. They go in my backpack every day for work and I pull them out during lunch. Also I can crank them with my wife in bed next to me and they don't leak hardly any sound. The cups are gorgeous and the build quality is great. They're comfortable and great to listen to. They lack some bass even at the warmest tuning but for everything other than EDM, they sound good. Really love these headphones, nothing in a closed back sounds as open and airy. These and Fostex TR-X00 and that's all the closed you'd ever need.

@mattrismatt5 жыл бұрын

@@johnyang799 A headphone with an "elevated response" in the middle-treble region doesn't mean that a headphone will sound 'bright' or that there is "something wrong" with its treble. The 4XX's elevation in that region is only a few dB above the response at 1k. What headphones do you know of that don't have emphasis - or a peak - in that region? Less emphasis doesn't always mean "better", especially in certain cases and for certain types of music. To produce its intended sound, the 4XX simply requires much more power than the most users are supplying. With insufficient power, the resulting sound will lack in bass*. Many people call that 'bright' or 'thin', but the 4XX actually has a recessed low-treble (5-6k), a region in which can cause sibilance. When powered correctly, yes, I would call the 4XX 'smooth and warm' - not bassy or bright. * especially considering that most people are comparing them to mainstream closed-back headphones from Beats, Bose, Sony, Skullcandy, etc.

Things are easy when things like the ethers are $1800, or even $1600. It's a very easy decision, I don't have to even think about it, it's an easy no. No, I am not spending 2 grand on headphones, see, it's not hard at all, but when $2000 (or in this case $1600) headphones drop below $1000, things become very, very difficult. I don't like difficult, I don't want to spend a thousand dollars on one pair of headphones, and I don't even consider it every day of my life, I see the price of $1000 and I find something else to consider buying..... But when they're 1600$ cans, for a thousand, it's something I am forced to really think about, and all I'm asking now is, how much do I have to spend on audio shit before I'm allowed to buy $1000 headphones.....

The Ether C Flow 1.1 compared to the C Flow has different dampening to smooth the bass. It also has angle pads, which half way into last year went to a firmer foam for improved bass. So Zeos should buy the 1.1 upgrade and the newer angle pads. I’m guessing the flat pads from the CX don’t give the best sound quality from the flows since that isn’t what Mr. Speakers puts on them. I ended up buying the C Flow 1.1 a couple months ago when the CX were sold out, and wish I had the chance to compare them before buying. I got the Flows for $1499 new, which is a hell of a lot more money than $900, and I doubt that I got $600 worth of better sound than the CX, but I am very happy with my purchase.

I think they would be a really good compliment to the aivas and will probably order a pair of the cx. aivas - more aggressive, smaller sound stage, intimate with very good detail, excellent bass, mids a tad recessed. Intense without being fatiguing. Fun. Very comfortable. The cx should be more neutral, less bass but enough, good detail, fast, larger soundstage. Open sounding for closed back. Very comfortable. The ether flow and ether c flow have wildly different opinions, polarized. Some like one or the other, others find them dampened sounding, others are obsessed. The aivas have been pretty universally praised. If this is your entrance into to high end headphones, either one of these and you are going to be mesmerized. Keep in mind, if you get the cx you will want an amp with some beef to it.

Nice cans :D @Zeos, ModHouse Argon Mk3 or Vokyl Erupt for gaming (Borderlands 3, Cyberpunk 2077, etc) ? ^^ Thanks in advance ! You're the reason I bought the HD58X and it sounds great. Will be even better when I'll get my new AMD pc build this year :) Then I'll defininitely need a powerful AMP/DAC for the Argon and my future headphones, maybe The Element from JDS Labs would be enough for a start. Have fun o/

@@dnalekaw4699 Oh :O What games have you tried them on ? Also what would you advise me to buy ? :D I want something with more bass than my HD58X but still good quality cans for around 400$. Vokyl Erupt seems about right and slo has a mic, I hope it's a quality mic :P It has 80 ohms impedance but I wonder what is the sensitivity.
@dnalekaw46995 жыл бұрын
@@MrSeifer159 If you like the midrange and treble of the 58x but want more bass, I'd say that the ZMF Classic is the way to go out of the headphones I've tried. You may like the Argons but I found the upper midrange to be dipped and a tizzy treble around 9k.

Great vid Z! Got a question, u and ur videos got me into caring about sound and quality. 2 years ago I bought the SMSL M3 and now I bought the Micca MB42X speakers but need help. How do I connect them? Zeos or anyone from the community please help.

hooooooooly fk i just got my pair of ether cx and they are truly AMAZING they are def more balanced than my xoo base cannons but everything is sooooo much crisper and with the right felt pad adjustments they still have plenty of bass. Def not as much overall rumble but the punch is awesome. Vocals are suuuuper and all the treble and other things are just so detailed and awesome. Seems they def pair well with my aune X1S and X7S. They block more sound than the X00S to even tough they have ZMF lambskin pads on them. These also so far have a more enjoyable sound signate than my audeze EL8 titaniums. The Titaniums are suuuuuuuper detailed and flat good for monitoring or mixing cans but not nearly as good for how most people like to listen to music.

Just curious which is better value the Ether CX or Focal Elex? What would the comparison be like?
@RathOX5 жыл бұрын
Focal elex will example blow the HD 800 out the water & Is basically a HD 650 on roids. Vs the ether CX which us basically the ether C flows as close as can be but half the cost. The elex is open backed so wide Soundstage & i mean WIDE zeos literally nutted. Wont get huge Soundstage on the closed backed CX but the actual imagining is great. Personally im getting the elex first as they also ship with a balanced cable/SE & im going to reference it on my 789. Zeos also hinted at the neumann NDH20 which are only $500

Your C Flow babies have a sort of phaiser, right? That MrSpeaker "TrueFlow" thing-a-ma-bob? My understanding is the regular Ether Cs, and these CXs do not have TrueFlow, right? Do you find that makes any difference what so ever?
@ZReviews5 жыл бұрын
The only way to know would be to get another pair of Ether C Flow and :"De Flow": them for a comparison. Since these have different tuning its hard to HEAR the benefit one to one.

I have only heard the 788. I know you said you don't "need" balanced, but its there if you ever need to drive more demanding headphones. You have some EQ features and the DAC is great. Thats why I say, you would be done as far as DAC/AMP goes because it will drive anything you have now and in the future.

Depends on the movie audio. Soundstage is ok, not bad for closed planars. Very good imaging but not a lot of attention on the bass (like the flows), just great extension. No peaky sibalance either. Benefit from higher quality volume.

Anyone looking into these I highly suggest watch a few of Oluv's Gadgets video on them. These are absolutely abysmal sounding headphones. I'm beginning to the Zeos might be deaf.

It is almost as if audio is subjective. Lol jk, no way that's possible!
@arthurhaywood21844 жыл бұрын
While I listen to Oluv's reviews, I don't pray at his altar. Neither do I at Zeos'. What I do is evaluate their reviews & quantify them based on my own opinion when I've listened to the same product. When I do this, I find Oluv's opinions to be way off base more often when compared to my own. I don't always agree with Zeos either but I find more similarities than differences. The Ether CX just have to be properly burned in & I don't trust Oluv when it comes to that aspect. The Ether CX should not be critically listened to until a minimum of 200 hours is reached & I personally wouldn't review them until after 300 hours.
@casualmime27924 жыл бұрын
Darrin does he even have a dedicated review? Seems like he doesn't. Can't even find it on his channel. Just a sound demo, which you should know is an incredibly flawed way to make any assumption about audio equipment. He's also comparing a closed back planarr against an open dynamic, electrostat, and bluetooth planar? Poor methodology.

@mattrismatt5 жыл бұрын
I'd avoid both. For a fraction of the cost (power requirements), I recommend you try out the Sivga SV003 with these replacement earpads from Amazon: B073NTTPPD. The resulting sound is detailed, with tight bass and crisp treble. A similar-sounding alternative would be the Sivga SV006 with Brainwavz MicroSuede oval pads.
